Reuters reported on October 3, 2026, that Jordanian authorities detained Saif al-Din Khader, whom sources described as a suspected ShinyHunters member using the alleged hacker nickname “Rey.” Two sources told Reuters that Khader was helping the FBI and international law-enforcement agencies locate other hackers. The FBI has not publicly confirmed Khader’s identity, detention, or cooperation, and the circumstances of the reported detention remain unclear.
Who is Rey, the ShinyHunters hacker reportedly detained in Jordan?
Reuters identified the person as Saif al-Din Khader and described “Rey” as his alleged hacker nickname, citing three people familiar with the matter. Reuters reported that two sources said Jordanian authorities took him into custody on Tuesday, September 29. The report did not establish where he was being held or the circumstances of the detention. Reuters reported the account on October 3, 2026.
Two of Reuters’ sources said Khader was helping the FBI and international law-enforcement agencies find other hackers. One source said he was walking investigators through his devices and digital correspondence. The FBI declined to comment on a specific arrest or overseas activity. It said it was aggressively investigating the recent incident allegedly involving ShinyHunters and had worked with partners to arrest multiple subjects.
That distinction matters: the reported detention and cooperation account comes from unnamed sources cited by Reuters, not a public announcement by Jordanian authorities or a direct FBI confirmation about Khader. The reporting reviewed as of October 3 did not establish formal Jordanian charges, proceedings, or whether Khader had been charged over the alleged FBI incident.

Was the FBI data breach confirmed?
No public FBI statement in the cited reporting confirmed ShinyHunters’ full claims about the FBIJobs.gov incident. On September 23, CBS reported that the FBI was aware of claims of unauthorized activity affecting the jobs website and was investigating; at that point, the bureau said it had not determined the breach point. ShinyHunters claimed it had taken two to three terabytes of FBI- and Justice Department-related data, a figure CBS reported as the group’s unverified claim. CBS reported the claim and the FBI’s initial response on September 23, 2026.
CBS said portions of samples provided to media appeared to correspond to real FBI or Justice Department personnel, but their origin had not been established. Reuters later reported that its analysis of a sample shared by ShinyHunters found extensive personal identifying information, sensitive job-role details, and psychiatric and medical information. That describes Reuters’ analysis of a sample; it does not verify every record, the group’s claimed volume, the data’s full provenance, or the complete scope of any intrusion. Reuters’ October 3 report covered its sample analysis alongside the detention account.

Is Rey the same person arrested in the Netherlands?
No. The Dutch case concerns a different alleged ShinyHunters member. The FBI said on September 29 that Dutch authorities had arrested an alleged group leader under Dutch law. CBS reported that the suspect was a 24-year-old from Amsterdam, arrested on September 15, and identified by sources as Pepijn van der Stap. Neither the FBI’s announcement nor the CBS report identifies him as Khader or Rey. The FBI announced the Dutch arrest on September 29, 2026; CBS reported the suspect’s identity and arrest date.
| Case | Person and alleged alias | Country and date | What authorities have publicly said |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reported Jordan detention | Saif al-Din Khader; alleged nickname “Rey” | Jordan; Reuters sources said he was detained September 29, 2026 | Reuters attributed the detention and reported cooperation to unnamed sources. The FBI declined to comment on a specific overseas arrest; the circumstances and formal legal status were not established in the reporting. Reuters, October 3, 2026 |
| Dutch arrest | Separate alleged ShinyHunters leader; CBS sources identified him as Pepijn van der Stap | Netherlands; CBS said the arrest occurred September 15, 2026 | The FBI publicly announced that Dutch authorities had arrested an alleged leader under Dutch law on September 29. FBI announcement, September 29, 2026; CBS report |
The dates refer to different events: according to CBS, the Dutch arrest took place on September 15, while the FBI publicized it on September 29. Reuters’ sources said Khader was detained in Jordan on September 29; Reuters reported that account on October 3. The public reporting gives more detail about the Dutch arrest than about Khader’s reported detention.

What has the FBI said about ShinyHunters?
In its September 29 announcement about the Dutch arrest, FBI Cyber Division Assistant Director Brett Leatherman said the suspect and co-conspirators had allegedly breached more than 140 organizations since the previous year and taken at least $70 million in extortion payments. Those are allegations stated by the FBI, not independently audited totals or findings established in court. The FBI’s announcement includes Leatherman’s statement.
Leatherman also described the alleged group’s approach: “They often target third-party vendors in cloud-based platforms, stealing sensitive data and extorting victims with threats to publish it.” That general description does not establish how the FBIJobs.gov incident occurred. In the September 23 reporting, the FBI had not determined the breach point. CBS’s report detailed the bureau’s initial response.

What should people do if they receive a ShinyHunters-related demand?
The FBI’s May 2026 IC3 advisory warns that actors may use the ShinyHunters name, including in potentially exaggerated claims and pressure tactics. It advises people to verify unusual requests through known channels, not to pay or respond to demands, and to report suspected activity. That is general guidance; it does not show that a particular person’s information was affected by the FBIJobs.gov claims. Read the FBI IC3 advisory.
