SHIFU: Traffic Masters is an unreleased, single-player driving and simulation game set in a VHS-tinted version of northern China during the 1990s. Its central idea is simple: learn the city and the vehicle, then make a living with ordinary cars rather than exotic supercars. You can haul cargo, carry taxi passengers, drive bus routes, pursue suspects or race through streets, with the entire city available for free-roam between jobs.
Steam currently lists a planned Q1 2027 release for Windows PC. The game is not yet available for purchase, so individual missions, controls and hardware support may change before launch. Boxy.Poly describes SHIFU: Traffic Masters as a personal recreation of the workhorse cars and living-city driving remembered from 1990s China. This is not a conventional supercar showcase. A vehicle’s modest power, weight and handling are part of the challenge. A slow truck may need an early braking point; a squad car may be underpowered during a pursuit; a bus must be placed carefully on narrow streets. The game’s variety comes from applying the same road knowledge to very different jobs.

The developer’s current update targets early 2027 and says controller support was being added. A separate developer reply says wheel support was not yet included. Treat both the release window and input support as provisional until the final build is published.
Your first session: a practical starting routine
Because the game combines simulation consequences with arcade-style city driving, your first objective should be control, not speed. Use this sequence when you begin:
- Choose a low-pressure activity first. Start with cargo, taxi or bus work. These jobs teach braking, steering and route reading without immediately combining every hazard.
- Drive a short free-roam loop. Leave the job area and make a circuit through several intersections, a narrow street and an open road. Note where the road tightens and where traffic tends to compress.
- Test braking before accepting a demanding fare. Brake at different speeds on a clear stretch. The goal is to learn how early the vehicle must slow, not to find its maximum speed.
- Make one smooth turn at a time. Avoid rapid steering corrections. Abrupt inputs matter more when you are carrying cargo or a passenger.
- Repeat a route in changing conditions. Weather and road conditions alter how vehicles handle. Repeating the same path helps you separate a route problem from a grip or visibility problem.
- Move to pursuits and races only after the route feels familiar. Those activities add traffic pressure and, in the case of racing, demand shortcut knowledge.
There is no published evidence of a required tutorial order or a specific progression system, so this is a sensible learning order rather than a claim about locked content.
Free-roam is your driving school
Steam says that, between jobs, the whole city is open to free-roam. Use that time deliberately rather than treating it as empty travel. Free-roam lets you learn intersections, alleys, braking distances and the personality of each vehicle without a fare, timetable or suspect forcing the decision.
Map the roads that jobs will punish
First, identify three route types: a broad arterial where you can build speed, a narrow street where positioning matters and a junction where several traffic streams meet. Approach each repeatedly from both directions. Remember which turns require early slowing and which alleys provide a clean alternative when the main road is crowded.
Watch how the city reacts
Traffic, cyclists and pedestrians react to driving. Their movement is part of the handling problem, not background decoration. Leave more margin near crossings and busy junctions, and avoid assuming that a clear lane will remain clear after you accelerate.
Practice with the vehicle you will actually use
Period cars do not share one universal feel. A workhorse’s weight and modest power can make a late braking move or a sudden lane change costly. Spend a few minutes in every new vehicle before taking its first serious job.

Driving priorities that prevent most mistakes
Brake early, then turn smoothly
Hard braking followed by a sharp steering input is the most expensive habit in the game’s job loop. Reduce speed before the corner, hold a steady line and make small corrections. This protects a load, keeps a passenger comfortable and gives a large vehicle room to rotate.
Route knowledge beats horsepower
The official description says street circuits reward knowledge of city alleys. A shorter, familiar route can outperform a faster but uncertain line, especially when traffic blocks the obvious road. Learn where an alley reconnects before relying on it during a race or pursuit.
Match the vehicle to the assignment
Do not judge a vehicle only by top speed. A truck’s capacity for controlled braking, a taxi’s smoothness and a bus’s predictable turning arc matter more than outright acceleration for their intended work. The game’s design deliberately makes ordinary cars meaningful.
Separate cruise mode from mission pressure
The developer describes both a relaxed cruise mode and mission-specific moods. Use cruise driving to experiment with lines and speed; use jobs to apply one change at a time. Trying to learn a new vehicle, a new route and a new weather condition during a timed activity creates avoidable errors.

Every activity can be evaluated with five questions: how precise must your inputs be, how much time pressure is present, what can be damaged or lost, how much route knowledge is needed and how intense the traffic is. The following table turns those differences into a quick choice.

Truck cargo: protect the load
Cargo is the clearest lesson in momentum. Watermelons are specifically described as able to fly into traffic if you brake too hard. That means a delivery is not simply a point-to-point sprint: every stop, turn and correction can affect what reaches the destination.
Approach intersections earlier than you would in an empty car. Bleed speed in a straight line, then turn with a steady steering angle. If traffic forces a sudden stop, prioritize keeping the truck stable instead of preserving every bit of speed. The safest route may be slower but easier to anticipate.

Taxi fares: comfort is part of the objective
Taxi work asks you to balance speed with a passenger’s tolerance for rough treatment. The published game description establishes that rough driving can make a passenger get out, so fast acceleration and late braking can directly end a fare.
Drive as though the passenger is evaluating the whole trip: accelerate progressively, leave a buffer before crossings and take corners without sawing at the wheel. When traffic blocks your preferred lane, a calm detour is better than an aggressive gap that produces a harsh maneuver.
Bus routes: combine size and schedule
Bus work combines a large vehicle, narrow streets and a timetable. The challenge is not only reaching the next stop; it is placing a long body through turns while preserving enough time to stay on schedule.
Before accepting a demanding route, preview its tightest corners in free-roam. Start braking before the turn, allow the rear of the bus to clear the inside edge and avoid committing to a lane that leaves no room for correction. A timetable rewards consistency: a repeatable line is more useful than one very fast attempt.
Police pursuits: traffic is the opponent
Pursuits use an underpowered squad car to chase suspects through traffic. You cannot rely on acceleration to erase every mistake. Keep the car pointed toward the next opening, anticipate intersections and avoid entering a gap that will close before the squad car arrives.

Pursuits are best treated as a test of anticipation rather than a demand for maximum speed at every moment.
Street racing: win with the map
Street races emphasize alleys and shortcuts. Modest power is intentional, so route choice can matter more than a long straight-line run. Drive the circuit without racing first, identify where an alley rejoins the main road and learn the braking point before a narrow turn.

During a race, protect the exit of each corner. A clean exit preserves momentum and keeps you positioned for the next opening. A dramatic entry followed by a correction usually costs more time than a controlled approach.

SHIFU’s city is active: traffic, cyclists and pedestrians react to your driving, while weather and road conditions change how vehicles handle. Plan for a route to feel different when visibility or grip changes.
- Reduce entry speed in poor conditions. A slower approach gives you time to respond when a road surface or traffic gap behaves differently than expected.
- Increase following distance. Extra space protects cargo, passengers and a large vehicle from emergency braking.
- Repeat important routes. Drive the same delivery or race line in more than one condition so you know which corners depend on grip and which depend on map geometry.
- Keep an escape option. On narrow streets, avoid placing the vehicle beside a solid obstacle when traffic may force a sudden correction.
The setting and visual style
The game presents northern China in the 1990s through VHS-tinted visuals, low-poly buildings and period daily drivers. The solo-developer production and deliberately ordinary vehicles support the central design goal: recreating the texture of everyday workhorse-car life rather than presenting a fantasy garage.
That setting also explains why route reading and vehicle character are more important than a catalog of high-performance machines. The city is meant to feel lived in, and the visual treatment is part of that memory-driven presentation.

Controller and wheel expectations
Controller support was being added in the developer’s current update. A separate reply says wheel support was not yet included. Therefore, do not buy a racing wheel specifically for this game based on pre-release information, and do not assume every controller feature will be present at launch.
The confirmed platform is Steam on Windows PC. No required controller, supported wheel model, keyboard bindings or final input-remapping menu has been published. Those details should be verified in the launch build.

SHIFU is a good fit if you enjoy learning a city, driving ordinary vehicles with distinct weight and personality, and improving through smoother decisions rather than instant upgrades. It should appeal to players who like the freedom of an open map but want activities with practical consequences: a load can spill, a passenger can leave, a bus can run late and a race can be lost through a missed alley.
It is less suited to someone looking only for supercars, pure arcade acceleration or a confirmed competitive wheel-simulation feature. The game’s appeal depends on accepting slower cars, period atmosphere and the discipline of using free-roam as practice.
