Sherwin-Williams vs. Benjamin Moore: How to Compare Their Paints for Your Project

Neither Sherwin-Williams nor Benjamin Moore is a universal winner. The sensible choice depends on the exact product line, surface, sheen, preparation, performance features, quantity, local price, and availability. Both companies sell paints ranging from basic contractor products to premium interior and exterior coatings, so comparing the logos alone can produce a misleading result. Match comparable products for the same job, then verify the current price and stock at your local retailer.

Why a brand-versus-brand verdict is misleading

A gallon of premium interior paint is not directly comparable with a gallon of entry-level exterior latex, even when the containers come from different companies. Each brand has multiple formulas for different substrates, finishes, traffic levels, moisture conditions, and application requirements.

The official product material available for both companies describes product ranges and manufacturer-stated features. It does not establish an independent, matched head-to-head test proving that one brand covers better, lasts longer, washes more easily, or delivers better value overall. User experiences can also vary because surface preparation, color, sheen, climate, application technique, and wear affect the result.

Use the brand names as a starting point, not the decision. First define the project, then compare products designed for that project at a similar quality tier.

What each company’s interior range includes

Benjamin Moore interior families

Benjamin Moore’s interior catalog includes Aura, Regal Select, Advance, and Ultra Spec 500. They are not interchangeable products: the intended substrate, finish, application method, and desired performance determine which family is appropriate.

  • Aura: a premium interior family presented for demanding finish and coverage needs.
  • Regal Select: described by Benjamin Moore as durable and washable, with options organized around interior applications and features.
  • Advance: an interior coating family used when a harder, furniture-like finish is required on suitable surfaces such as trim or cabinetry; confirm the label directions for the substrate and application method.
  • Ultra Spec 500: a professional-oriented interior line available in multiple sheens and project configurations.

Benjamin Moore’s contractor material emphasizes choosing by substrate and project requirements. Features it discusses include scuff resistance, self-priming characteristics, moisture-related mildew resistance, and low- or zero-VOC formulations. A feature listed for a product family is not a guarantee that every color, sheen, or regional formulation has identical performance, so check the technical information for the exact can.

Sherwin-Williams interior families

Sherwin-Williams’ own comparison material lists Emerald, Duration Home, SuperPaint, Cashmere, Harmony, and ProMar 200. These names represent a range of interior options rather than a single quality level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Emerald: positioned in the company’s premium interior range.
  • Duration Home: an interior option intended for durable household use.
  • SuperPaint: a broad-use interior family available for common residential projects.
  • Cashmere: an interior line marketed around application and finish characteristics.
  • Harmony: an interior option associated with low-odor and emissions-conscious specifications; verify the current label and local formulation.
  • ProMar 200: a professional-oriented interior family used across many contractor projects.

Listing these products does not prove that one Sherwin-Williams line matches or outperforms a particular Benjamin Moore line. A fair comparison pairs products with similar intended use, quality tier, sheen, and feature requirements.

Start with the surface and the room

Surface and environment should eliminate unsuitable products before price enters the discussion. Identify whether you are painting an interior wall, ceiling, trim, door, cabinet, masonry surface, siding, or another exterior substrate. Then note the condition of the existing coating and the likely stresses: routine washing, hand contact, children and pets, steam, condensation, sunlight, or weather exposure.

EVOLVE Paint & Primer: Environment-friendly, Low Sheen with One-coat Coverage for Interior & Exterior surfaces (Beach Beige, 1-Gallon)
  • PAINT + PRIMER IN ONE: Evolve’s paint-and-primer formula helps you get great coverage from the start, sealing your surface and reducing the extra work of multiple coats.
  • AVAILABLE IN MULTIPLE SHEENS, COLORS & SIZES: Choose from a curated palette of designer colors in Flat, Eggshell, Satin, and Semi-Gloss sheens to match any style, room, or project. Available in 1-Gallons & 5-Gallons.
  • EGGSHELL SHEEN – Soft, Velvety Glow: Offers a gentle sheen that balances elegance with durability. Ideal for moderate-traffic areas like dining rooms, hallways, and family rooms. Easy to clean without compromising the finish.
  • STAIN & SCRUB RESISTANT: Built to last in real spaces, Evolve helps resist marks, scuffs, and water spotting, so your home continues to look polished and well-maintained.
  • DESIGNED FOR MOISTURE-PRONE AREAS: Formulated to perform well in bathrooms, kitchens, entryways, laundry rooms, and other high-humidity spaces.

Interior walls and ceilings

For ordinary walls, compare products intended for interior drywall or previously painted surfaces. Decide whether the room needs frequent washing, resistance to scuffs, low odor during occupancy, or a particular sheen. Ceilings generally call for a different appearance and application behavior than high-contact walls, so do not assume that a wall paint is the best ceiling product.

Trim, doors, and cabinets

Trim and cabinetry are touched and cleaned more often than walls and may need a harder finish and a different application process. Benjamin Moore’s Advance family is one example of a line intended for this type of demanding finish, but the correct choice still depends on the substrate, preparation, and label instructions. Compare it with a Sherwin-Williams product designed for the same use rather than with a standard wall paint.

Moisture-prone areas

Bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens, and other humid spaces require attention to moisture exposure and ventilation. Benjamin Moore’s contractor information identifies moisture-related mildew resistance as a selection feature. Check the exact product documentation and use the coating only where its label permits; a mildew-resistant claim does not correct leaks, persistent condensation, or inadequate ventilation.

Exterior substrates

Exterior walls, trim, siding, and masonry experience weather, ultraviolet exposure, temperature changes, and movement. Match the coating to the substrate and exterior use. Sherwin-Williams’ comparison guide uses exterior latex paint in an illustrative cost example, but that example is not a brand-to-brand performance test.

How sheen changes the decision

Sheen affects appearance, cleanability, reflection, and how much surface irregularity is visible. Benjamin Moore’s catalog states that sheen selection relates partly to wall condition and traffic and offers multiple sheen levels. The same principle applies when evaluating Sherwin-Williams products.

Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch Latex Brush-On Paint, Semi-Gloss White
  • Use for a variety of indoor and outdoor project surfaces including wood, metal, plaster, masonry or unglazed ceramic
  • Water-based acrylic formula is low odor, resist chips and provides long-lasting protection
  • Covers up to 120 sq ft and dries to touch in 30 minutes for quick project completion
  • Semi-gloss finish minimizes surface imperfections, goes on smoothly and provides excellent hide
  • Prior to application sand surfaces with 180/200 grit sandpaper, then wash with a degreaser, allow the surface to dry and apply paint
Project consideration What to evaluate
Wall condition Lower-reflectance finishes generally draw less attention to minor imperfections; confirm the available sheen for the exact product.
Traffic and cleaning Higher-contact rooms may justify a finish and formula intended for more frequent washing.
Visual effect More reflective finishes change how color and surface texture appear under different lighting.
Consistency Compare the same sheen across products; comparing a matte product with a satin product is not a fair paint test.

Always compare color samples in the room’s actual lighting. Benjamin Moore directs customers toward samples and local independent retailers, where availability and tinting options can be confirmed.

Performance features worth matching

Instead of asking which brand is “better,” write down the features the room actually needs and check that both candidate products address them.

  • Washability: important for kitchens, hallways, children’s rooms, and other areas cleaned regularly. Benjamin Moore describes Regal Select as durable and washable, but that is a manufacturer description rather than independent comparative evidence.
  • Scuff resistance: useful on corridors, stairwells, doors, and other high-contact surfaces. Benjamin Moore’s contractor material identifies scuff resistance as a product-selection attribute.
  • Self-priming claims: a self-priming label does not mean every surface can be painted without cleaning, repair, or spot priming. Follow the exact preparation instructions.
  • Moisture and mildew-related resistance: relevant in humid rooms and some exterior applications, but it cannot replace fixing water intrusion or controlling humidity.
  • VOC and odor statements: low- or zero-VOC options can matter when rooms are occupied during painting. Read the current technical data and ventilation guidance for the specific color and base.
  • Application and finish: leveling, open time, touch-up behavior, and the recommended brush or roller can affect the finished appearance as much as the brand name.

Feature language is product-specific. A claim made for one line should not be transferred automatically to every product sold by that company.

A fair Sherwin-Williams-versus-Benjamin-Moore comparison method

  1. Define the project. Record interior or exterior use, substrate, room conditions, color, approximate square footage, and whether the surface is new, previously painted, glossy, stained, or damaged.
  2. Set the performance priorities. Decide whether washability, scuff resistance, moisture-related protection, low or zero VOC, odor, or a particular finish matters most.
  3. Choose a sheen before comparing prices. Compare like with like: the same general appearance and the same intended traffic level.
  4. Select comparable product tiers. Put a premium interior product against another premium interior product, and a professional contractor product against another professional contractor product. Do not treat a product list as proof of equivalence.
  5. Read the exact technical information. Confirm approved substrates, preparation, primer requirements, recoat guidance, application tools, VOC statements, and limitations for the color and base you will buy.
  6. Calculate the quantity for the same job. Use the same estimated area and number of coats when requesting quotes. A lower price per gallon is not a lower project cost if the products require different quantities or preparation.
  7. Check local availability. Benjamin Moore sells through an independent retailer network and directs shoppers to local stores for samples. Sherwin-Williams availability and pricing also vary by store, region, product, color, and account. Ask each retailer to quote the exact product, sheen, color, and number of gallons.
  8. Test the appearance. Apply samples on the actual surface or a representative board, observe them in daylight and artificial light, and check the finish after drying.
  9. Document the final choice. Keep the product name, base, color code, sheen, lot information if provided, and purchase date for future touch-ups.

Price and value: what the available figures do—and do not—show

There is no stable current cross-brand price comparison established by the official material reviewed. Retail prices change by region, store, contractor account, promotions, color base, sheen, and package size. The only explicit numerical scenario in the available Sherwin-Williams comparison guide is an illustration of why a higher initial price might reduce repainting frequency.

Illustrative scenario from Sherwin-Williams Lower-grade exterior latex example Higher-quality paint example
Quantity 20 gallons 20 gallons
Price assumption $30 per gallon $45 per gallon
Assumed service life Six years 25 years
Stated result The guide estimates $64 per year in savings before labor or maintenance.

Sherwin-Williams states in that guide, “Higher-quality paint — even when priced higher — can save you money.” The figures are the company’s hypothetical quality-selection argument, with no publication year shown, not an observed market statistic, a guarantee, or a comparison with Benjamin Moore. They also omit variables such as labor, repairs, washing, color changes, and the actual service conditions of a particular building.

  • DURABLE & VERSATILE: A highly pigmented, thick formula available in 12 bold colors and a Matte, Satin or Gloss finish. Ideal for interior and exterior paint jobs on wood, laminate, plastic/UPVC, metal, concrete, brick, masonry, stone, glass and more.

  • EASY APPLICATION: Remove dirt with a damp cloth, wipe the surface clean and dry, sand/score the surface (optional based upon the finish required), stir to mix the color and paint with a brush or roller.

For your project, compare the total quote for equal quantities and equivalent preparation. Include primer, caulk, patching compound, tools, delivery, and likely labor if someone else is doing the work. A paint that costs more per gallon may still be economical if it reduces coats or repainting, but that outcome must be verified for the specific products and surface rather than assumed from the brand.

Preparation and application can outweigh small formula differences

Paint performance depends on the surface beneath it. Before opening either brand’s can, correct the conditions that cause common failures.

  • Clean away dust, grease, chalk, and residues that interfere with adhesion.
  • Repair cracks, holes, loose caulk, peeling paint, and water damage; allow repairs to dry and sand as appropriate.
  • Remove or dull glossy contamination when the product directions require it.
  • Use the specified primer for bare substrate, stains, dramatic color changes, or adhesion problems.
  • Protect adjacent floors, hardware, and fixtures, and maintain the ventilation required by the label.
  • Mix and apply the paint within the stated temperature, humidity, and recoat conditions.
  • Keep a wet edge and use the recommended roller nap or brush so texture is consistent.

A self-priming claim is not permission to skip cleaning or repairs. Likewise, low- or zero-VOC paint still requires the label’s ventilation and safe-use instructions.

Common failure modes and how to diagnose them

Uneven coverage

Uneven color can result from porous patches, strong color changes, insufficient quantity, inconsistent application, or failing to maintain a wet edge. Confirm that the substrate was uniformly primed and that the product’s stated coverage assumptions fit the surface. Do not infer that one brand inherently covers better from a single room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Visible roller or brush marks

Marks may come from the wrong tool, overworking paint as it dries, excessive pressure, or unsuitable temperature and humidity. Use the tool and application method specified for the product, work in manageable sections, and avoid repeatedly brushing partially set paint.

Sticking doors or trim

Blocking can occur when painted surfaces contact before the coating has developed adequate hardness. Follow the product’s drying and recoat instructions, allow additional time in cool or humid conditions, and avoid forcing tight-fitting doors or drawers closed immediately after painting.

Peeling or poor adhesion

Peeling usually points to contamination, moisture, a weak previous coating, inadequate preparation, or an incompatible substrate. Remove unstable material, correct the moisture source, and use the specified primer before repainting. Changing brands without fixing the underlying condition rarely solves the problem.

Touch-up mismatch

Touch-ups can differ because of sheen, colorant, application texture, fading, or a different batch. Save the exact product and color information, and test the touch-up in an inconspicuous area. For a noticeable repair, repainting the entire wall or defined section may produce a more uniform result.

Which option fits common project priorities?

Your priority How to choose between the brands
Best finish for a high-visibility room Compare premium interior lines at the same sheen, test samples, and evaluate the dried finish under the room’s lighting.
Washable, busy household walls Compare products that explicitly address durability and washability; verify the exact sheen and cleaning guidance.
Trim or cabinetry Compare coatings designed for trim or cabinetry, not standard wall paint, and follow substrate and application requirements.
Low-odor or emissions-conscious work Compare the current VOC and odor statements for the exact base, color, and sheen; provide ventilation regardless of brand.
Lowest project cost Request local quotes for equal quantities and include preparation materials, primer, labor, and the expected repaint interval.
Fast purchase Choose the suitable product that is actually stocked in the required color and sheen, then confirm that a substitute has equivalent specifications before changing lines.

Questions to ask at the paint counter

  • Is this product approved for my exact substrate and interior or exterior use?
  • Does the chosen sheen fit the room’s traffic and the condition of the wall?
  • Will I need a separate primer for this surface, stain, or color change?
  • What VOC, odor, ventilation, drying, and recoat information applies to this exact base and color?
  • What quantity and number of coats should I budget for the measured area?
  • Is the product currently available in the color and sheen I need?
  • What is the return or tinting policy if the color is wrong?
  • Can the retailer provide a sample or recommend a test size?

Bottom line: choose the product, not the logo

The evidence does not establish a universal Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore winner through an independent matched test. Benjamin Moore offers interior families such as Aura, Regal Select, Advance, and Ultra Spec 500, while Sherwin-Williams lists Emerald, Duration Home, SuperPaint, Cashmere, Harmony, and ProMar 200. Those ranges overlap in purpose but are not automatically equivalent.

Define the substrate and environment, select the required sheen and features, compare similar product tiers, obtain local quotes for equal quantities, and test the dried color and finish. Treat durability, coverage, and value as product- and project-specific outcomes. That process is more reliable than choosing a brand name in the abstract.
