Shelly’s consumer listing advertises simultaneous tracking of up to 10 people and as many as 10 customizable zones. However, Shelly’s US technical documentation, IFA announcement and safety guide specify detection of up to six people. Until the company clarifies whether the higher figure depends on firmware, configuration or a regional specification, buyers should treat six as the documented hardware limit and ten as a marketing claim that requires verification.
What Shelly Presence Gen4 actually detects
Presence Gen4 (model S4SN-0U61X) is an indoor presence sensor built around 60–64 GHz millimeter-wave radar. Unlike a motion detector that may stop responding when someone sits still, radar presence sensing is intended to continue detecting a person who is seated or otherwise barely moving. Shelly positions it for room automation: turning lights on, adjusting heating or cooling, and triggering energy routines.

There is no camera or optical-imaging component described in Shelly’s product and safety materials. That means the device reports radar-derived presence rather than producing photographs or video. Shelly’s consumer product page says Presence Gen4 can “Track up to 10 people simultaneously” and offers up to 10 customizable detection zones. Shelly’s API also exposes a tracking-range setting from 1 to 10 objects. Those details explain why the product is promoted as a ten-person sensor, but an API setting alone does not establish that released hardware will reliably distinguish ten real people in every room.

Shelly’s US technical documentation lists object detection as “Yes, up to 6 objects (people).” The official IFA announcement and safety guide use the same six-person figure. The discrepancy is material if you are planning a busy office, classroom or living area. Confirm the current firmware and the documentation for your region before designing an automation around more than six occupants.

Zones, filtering and room coverage
You can define up to 10 detection zones, allowing separate actions for areas such as a desk, sofa, doorway or dining table. Zone logic can make an automation more useful than a single room-wide motion flag—for example, keeping a desk light on while leaving the rest of the room idle.

The specified maximum coverage is 42 m², roughly 450 square feet. Treat that as a rated area rather than a promise that every point in a 42 m² room will perform identically. Mounting angle, partitions, furniture and the shape of the room can create dead spots or overlapping zones. Shelly documents sensitivity controls and filtering for small objects, including pets and robot vacuums, so installation should include adjustment and observation rather than relying on factory settings.
Connectivity and smart-home support
Presence Gen4 supports Wi‑Fi 6, Bluetooth 5 LE, Zigbee 3.0 and Matter over Wi‑Fi. Shelly documents integrations with Shelly Cloud, Home Assistant and other platforms. Matter support can simplify adoption in a mixed smart-home setup, while Zigbee may suit installations that already use a Zigbee coordinator. Check the capabilities exposed by your chosen controller: a platform may support the sensor but not every zone, object-count or light-state attribute.

A built-in light sensor reports dark, twilight and bright states. Combining that reading with presence can prevent lights from switching on during daylight, or apply different scenes at twilight without adding a separate illuminance sensor.

The sensor can stand on its freestanding base, attach with adhesive tape, or mount with screws and wall plugs. Shelly documents both wall and corner mounting patterns. Choose a position with a clear view of the intended zone, keep the USB‑C lead secure, and test detection at the edges of the room before fixing the final angle.

Does it replace a camera or a safety sensor?
It can provide occupancy automation without video, but it is not a security camera, identity system or medical monitor. Radar presence does not tell an automation platform who a person is, and no independent accuracy or error-rate figure is established in the available materials. Shelly’s safety guide explicitly says: “This device is not a safety system. Do not rely on it for life-critical or emergency applications.” Do not use it as a substitute for smoke detection, emergency response, fall monitoring or other life-safety equipment.

The exact marketplace search phrase is “Shelly Presence Gen4.” Reports have identified listings in Spain and Germany, while wider availability and pricing have not been settled. Before ordering, check the live seller, shipping region, warranty, included USB‑C power arrangement and the firmware or documentation supplied for your market.
