Find Shelf Mushrooms in the Dappled Forest, attached to standing Poplar Tree trunks or fallen Poplar logs. Break one to collect it. If you already have a small Shelf Mushroom, Bone Meal grows it into a large one, which drops two Shelf Mushrooms when broken.
Where Shelf Mushrooms spawn
Shelf Mushrooms generate on Poplar Trees and fallen Poplar Trees in the Dappled Forest. Look along the sides of trunks and logs rather than searching the ground. The Java Edition 26.3 release notes say the Dappled Forest can be found near cold biomes. Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 release notes and the Bedrock Edition 26.50 changelog describe the mushroom’s tree-based generation.

- Explore until you reach a Dappled Forest. In Java Edition, look near cold biomes as a guide to finding it.
- Check the sides of standing Poplar trunks and fallen Poplar logs for the attached mushroom.
- Break the Shelf Mushroom to collect it.
How to get more from one mushroom
Shelf Mushrooms come in small and large sizes. Apply Bone Meal to a small Shelf Mushroom to make it large, then break the large mushroom to receive two Shelf Mushroom items. This is useful when you have already collected one and want to multiply your supply without finding another immediately.
Can you get Shelf Mushrooms from a Wandering Trader?
Wandering Traders are another possible source, according to the Java and Bedrock release notes. Treat this as a backup rather than a guaranteed method: the notes list trader availability but do not promise that every trader will offer Shelf Mushrooms.

Shelf Mushrooms can be used like other mushrooms to make stews. The release notes do not specify a recipe for Shelf Mushrooms, so the exact crafting combination is not established here.
Which editions and versions are covered?
The mechanics described here are documented in the official Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 release notes, published September 15, 2026, and the Bedrock Edition 26.50 changelog. The two editions confirm the Dappled Forest and Poplar Tree route, Bone Meal growth, large-form drops, and Wandering Trader as a possible source. If a later release changes these mechanics, follow the newer version’s notes.
