Shelf Friend combines two modest shopping aids: a calculator for comparing manually entered shelf prices by unit, and a small Chinese-language library of product-care guides. It can help answer whether a larger pack is better value or surface relevant care guidance, but it is not a live price tracker or a substitute for checking whether the product suits your needs.
What Shelf Friend does
Project author 十方空烬 · Ember describes Shelf Friend as a small web app made to help a friend with two shopping decisions: which item costs less per usable unit, and whether a product fits its intended use and care requirements. The author says the friend is anonymous and had not yet provided feedback. The project description and checks are therefore not a user study.

Its first part is a unit-price calculator. You enter shelf prices, net quantities and pack counts; it converts grams to kilograms and millilitres to litres, and accounts for multipacks. It refuses to compare unlike quantity types—mass, volume and count—because a price per kilogram cannot meaningfully rank against a price per litre or per item. Calculations are deterministic JavaScript; a language model does not choose the cheaper offer.
The second part searches a small library of product-care guidance. The author describes eight guides spanning cookware, pantry packaging, cleaners, food containers, small appliances, tissue multipacks and batteries. Most are original buying checklists. The cast-iron entry is a concise linked summary scoped to Lodge seasoned cast iron; the app does not claim unknown product specifications as facts.

How to interpret the price comparison
The project’s example compares fictional offers: 2 kg of rice for 2.50 OMR and 500 g for 0.75 OMR. Those work out to 1.25 OMR/kg and 1.50 OMR/kg respectively, making the first example about 16.7% cheaper per kilogram. These are demonstration inputs, not prices from a supermarket and not evidence of typical savings.
For a real shop, use the shelf label’s comparable unit price where it is available, then check that the quantity reflects what you can use. An East London NHS Foundation Trust guide recommends comparing by weight or volume—such as price per 100 g or 100 ml—and checking drained weight for canned goods when the liquid is not the useful portion. Its advice is UK-specific; dated promotions in the guide should not be treated as current offers.

- Compare like with like: same quantity type and, where relevant, the same usable form of the product.
- For multipacks or multi-buy deals, consider whether you will use, freeze or share the extra amount. Buying more is not a saving if it goes to waste.
- Check cupboards and freezers and plan with a list. The NHS guide presents these as ways to avoid excess purchases and impulse buying.
The same 2023 NHS guide quotes an unnamed contributor saying, “I’ve cut around £25.00 a month from my grocery bills.” That is one person’s anecdotal report, not a controlled result or a forecast for Shelf Friend users.
How the product-care guide search works
Shelf Friend runs a quantized ONNX conversion of an open-weight multilingual MiniLM model in the browser using Transformers.js. A web worker embeds the question and guide descriptions, then ranks the guides by cosine similarity. The interface displays the top-ranked guide only when its score clears a threshold; otherwise it reports that the library has no sufficiently relevant content. The score is labelled as similarity, not as a probability or an accuracy rating.

The interface and guide text are Chinese. The project author reports that English queries can match the Chinese guides, including “How should I clean and oil a cast iron skillet?” alongside Chinese examples such as “铸铁锅保养” (“Cast-iron care”) and “保鲜盒怎么用” (“How to use food containers”). This describes intended behavior, not a formal evaluation of multilingual retrieval accuracy.
What has—and has not—been checked
The author reports trying Chinese questions about cast iron, bulk rice and food containers, an English cast-iron question, and an unrelated football question that returned no guide. They also report checking the public deployment and small-phone and landscape layouts. Automated tests cover unit conversion, incompatible quantity types, invalid inputs, zero prices, ties and similarity arithmetic.

- Add scanners you listen to the most to your Favorites list for quick access.
- Browse the directory of scanners by location or genre (public safety, air traffic, railroad, marine, etc).
Those checks do not establish how reliably the guide search finds the right answer in ordinary use: the author says retrieval accuracy has not been benchmarked, not every phone has been tested, and the intended friend had not yet given feedback. Treat the guide match as a pointer to limited guidance, not certification that an item is safe, suitable or compatible with your particular product.

The initial model download is reported as about 118 MB. In one observation of the public demo, that first load took 13.3 seconds and a later query took about 0.1 seconds. These are single-browser observations, not general performance figures or guarantees. The author recommends opening the app before entering a supermarket with weak reception. Browser caching may help on a later visit, but offline availability is not promised for every device.

According to the project author, inference runs in the browser, so shopping questions are not sent to a remote inference service or stored on an app server. The initial app and model downloads still contact public CDNs and generate ordinary request metadata.
Where Shelf Friend fits—and where it does not
Shelf Friend is most useful when you can read its Chinese interface, have the shelf price and quantity to enter, and want either a normalized unit comparison or a first pointer to one of its care guides. It does not scrape live retailer prices, identify products from photos or barcodes, certify materials, or generate manuals. Its small guide corpus and unbenchmarked search mean it should complement, not replace, labels, manufacturer instructions and your own judgment.
