In a Hindustan Times interview published October 2, 2026, she described long working days, refused leave, verbal abuse and severe emotional distress. Her account offers one person’s measure of the cost of leaving; it does not establish what workers generally pay to exit a difficult job.
What Madhurima says it cost to leave
Hindustan Times identifies the interviewee as Madhurima, 31, who chose not to disclose her surname. She said she left a government-owned bank in March 2024 after working there since October 2022, and paid ₹2 lakh in bond penalties. The report does not publish the agreement or explain how the amount was calculated, and neither the bank nor the startup is named.
Her reported monthly in-hand bank pay was ₹70,000, plus house-rent allowance. She moved to a Bengaluru-based startup for ₹35,000 a month—a 50% reduction from that in-hand figure. By the interview’s publication, she said her salary had risen to ₹60,000 as a Senior Customer Support Executive, and she was working remotely from Hyderabad, where she lived with her husband. The pay and employment details are her account as reported by Hindustan Times, not independently verified figures.
Why she decided to resign
Long days and limited breaks
Madhurima said she had prepared for the IBPS exam for two years after completing a master’s degree, then joined the bank and was posted to a rural branch in Karnataka, where she underwent mandatory training. She described days lasting more than 12 hours, some Sunday work, added targets and limited leave.

She said that while working at the cash counter she could not take breaks, and that she developed a severe urinary tract infection (UTI) which lasted two to three months. These are her recollections in the interview, not independently established findings about the branch or the bank.
Emotional strain and a refused leave request
“I was crying every day after work,” Madhurima told Hindustan Times. She also described exhaustion, speaking less with her parents, and verbal abuse from a senior colleague. She said she reported him to HR and that his behavior changed after HR contacted him. She told the outlet she had suicidal thoughts at the time; the interview does not establish a clinical diagnosis or independently assess the circumstances.

She placed her breaking point in February 2024, when a request for leave to attend a friend’s wedding was refused shortly before the planned absence. She submitted her resignation the following month while on probation and served one month’s notice.
How she found work during her notice period
While serving notice, Madhurima said she contacted recruiters on LinkedIn and sent cold emails. According to the report, she secured the startup role during that period. She accepted the lower starting salary and paid the reported bond penalty to leave the bank.

The account shows the specific trade-off she described: lower pay at first in exchange for leaving a job she said was harming her wellbeing, followed by a remote role and a reported salary increase. It cannot show whether the bond was enforceable, whether the amount was contractually justified, or what another employee in a similar position might owe. The report does not include the bond terms or a response from the bank.
