When Sony showed the first PlayStation Portable, a friend of former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden who worked at Nintendo texted him: “You bastards.” Layden recalled the exchange in an interview with The Expansion Pass, as reported by GamesRadar+. He could not pin down the year, remembering it as “2003, ’04, ’05, something like that.”
What did the Nintendo employee say about the PSP?
Layden said his friend sent him a text reading “You bastards” after Sony showed the first PSP. He recalled replying, “Hey, bro, you know, it’s all fun and games.” The exchange was a private message between friends, not an official response from Nintendo.

GamesRadar+ does not name the friend or establish the person’s role at Nintendo beyond Layden’s description that they were working there. The remark is best understood as a personal reaction to Sony entering handheld gaming, not a statement on behalf of the company.

Layden did not give a firm date. His recollection was: “I remember when we showed the first PSP back in – what was that? 2003, ’04, ’05, something like that.” The anecdote therefore places the message sometime around 2003–05, but does not establish a specific reveal year.

Why did Sony’s handheld entry matter?
Nintendo had an established presence in portable gaming through the Game Boy line, while Sony was extending its PlayStation brand into handhelds. The PSP and Nintendo DS also took different approaches: the PSP brought a PlayStation-branded portable experience, while the DS stood out for its dual screens and touch interface. That competitive backdrop helps explain why Sony’s arrival could draw a sharp reaction from someone inside Nintendo; it does not tell us anything more about the friend’s views than the text Layden recalled.
How the systems performed commercially
GamesRadar+ reports lifetime sales of more than 154 million Nintendo DS units and 76 million PSP units. Those figures are attributed here to GamesRadar+; they illustrate the scale of the competition, but do not by themselves explain either system’s performance.

What did Layden say about the PSP’s challenges?
In the same retrospective account, Layden said the PSP “did reasonably well,” but that its operating system was hacked and the device could be jailbroken relatively easily. He also pointed to Monster Hunter’s cooperative play as part of how the series became a social draw in Japan. These are Layden’s observations about the platform and player behavior, not proof that piracy alone determined the PSP’s fortunes or that one factor alone drove Monster Hunter’s popularity.
