Neither robot is a proven all-home winner: the available product pages contain manufacturer specifications, not an independent head-to-head test. The Shark Matrix Plus model RV2610WA is the stronger fit if you want documented sonic scrubbing and a bagless self-empty base included in the package. The standard Roomba Combo i5 is the better fit if you prefer iRobot’s room-based Imprint Smart Mapping and an interchangeable bin that turns the robot between vacuuming and wet mopping. A separate i5+ configuration is required for iRobot’s self-emptying Clean Base.

Your floor plan should decide the purchase. Homes with rugs need a specific workflow with the Combo i5 because iRobot says to remove carpets or exclude carpeted rooms when the Combo Bin is installed. Before ordering either product, verify the exact model number, dock, bin and included accessories rather than relying on a family name such as “Matrix Plus” or “Combo i5.”

What is actually being compared?

This comparison covers Shark’s Matrix Plus 2-in-1 Robot with XL HEPA Self-Empty Base, model RV2610WA, and iRobot’s Roomba Combo i5, model I517020. Those identifiers matter because both product families have nearby variants with different hardware. Shark’s cited US listing names RV2610WA and includes its self-empty base. iRobot’s standard Combo i5 listing describes a charging base, while the i5+ listing is the one that includes the automatic Clean Base.

The evidence available for these products is limited to official US product pages accessed October 13, 2026. Their performance percentages, navigation descriptions and capacity figures are manufacturer statements. They should help you match a machine to your home, but they do not establish which robot removes more dirt, avoids more obstacles or lasts longer in independent testing.

How the mopping systems differ

Shark’s sonic approach

Shark describes RV2610WA as combining vacuuming with sonic mopping. Its listing says the mop scrubs at 100 times per minute and provides a Matrix Mop mode in the app. That wording describes the mechanism and control option; it is not a measured comparison with the Roomba’s pad.

The Shark package listed for this model includes reusable pads and starter cleaning solution. The manufacturer also shows Matrix replacement pads and multi-surface cleaner as accessory categories. Check that a replacement item names RV2610WA or your exact revision before buying, because a product-family label alone does not prove fit.

Roomba’s interchangeable Combo Bin

The Combo i5 uses an interchangeable bin. With the standard vacuum bin installed, it operates as a vacuum. Replacing that bin with the Combo Bin supplies water to a microfiber mop pad and switches the robot into vacuum-and-mop mode, according to iRobot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This design makes the choice of bin part of your cleaning plan. You can keep a dry-vacuum routine for carpeted areas and install the wet bin for hard-floor rooms, but the bin must be changed physically. The iRobot listing notes a microfiber mopping pad and an extra filter in the box; it does not provide a direct claim that this pad scrubs more or less effectively than Shark’s sonic system.

Rugs and mixed flooring: the decision that can change the result

If your home has many rugs

iRobot’s instructions are explicit: when the Combo Bin is installed, roll up or remove carpets, or use the app or a voice assistant to clean only rooms without rugs or carpets. That means a mixed-floor home requires either a preparation step before a mop run or a room-selection routine that keeps the wet bin away from carpet.

Consider how often you mop and how much rearranging you tolerate. If rugs cover the paths between your kitchen, hallway and living room, a whole-home wet run with the Combo i5 is not a “set it and forget it” operation. Plan separate vacuum and mop runs, and keep the dry bin available for carpet cleaning.

If most floors are hard surface

A home dominated by sealed hard flooring reduces the need to manage carpet boundaries. The Combo i5 can still require bin changes, while the Shark’s cited package is designed around a combined vacuum-and-sonic-mop system. Your practical choice then shifts toward whether you prefer the Shark’s documented scrubbing method and included self-empty base or iRobot’s interchangeable-bin workflow and room mapping.

What the sources do not establish

Neither product page establishes that one robot can safely wet-mop every rug, detect every carpet edge or lift its pad automatically. Do not infer those behaviors from the presence of a mop mode. Follow the floor-care instructions for your flooring and the exact model manual.

Self-emptying and debris handling

Shark RV2610WA

The cited RV2610WA package includes a bagless XL HEPA self-empty base. Shark states that the base can hold up to 60 days of debris. Because it is bagless, you empty the base’s dust container rather than replacing a disposable collection bag. The base is also where Shark makes its filtration claim: 99.97% of dust and allergens down to 0.3 microns. Shark publishes that figure as a product claim; it is not an independent laboratory comparison with the Roomba.

Standard Combo i5 versus i5+

The standard Combo i5 page lists a charging base, not the automatic Clean Base. iRobot identifies the i5+ as the configuration that empties debris automatically and advertises up to 60 days of disposal capacity for that version. If unattended emptying is important, read the retailer’s package contents and model code carefully: “Combo i5” and “i5+” are not interchangeable names for the same dock.

A useful buying check is to confirm three items in the listing before paying: the robot’s model number, the pictured or named dock, and whether the bin supplied is the standard vacuum bin, the Combo Bin, or both. A lower price can simply reflect a different configuration rather than a better deal.

Navigation, mapping and room control

Shark’s LiDAR mapping claim

Shark lists 360-degree LiDAR mapping for RV2610WA. LiDAR indicates the sensing technology Shark uses to build its map, but the cited page does not provide a controlled accuracy test, map-completion rate or obstacle-avoidance result against iRobot.

iRobot’s Imprint Smart Mapping

iRobot describes Imprint Smart Mapping for the Combo i5. Its room-directed controls are useful when you need to send the robot to selected rooms, especially when the Combo Bin is installed and carpeted rooms must be excluded. The page does not state that Imprint Smart Mapping is more or less reliable than Shark’s LiDAR system.

How to choose between the claims

  • Choose based on the control you will actually use: room selection and carpet exclusions favor the workflow iRobot documents; a LiDAR-based map and Matrix Mop mode favor the Shark feature set.
  • Do not treat a sensor label as a cleaning-performance score. Mapping quality can depend on furniture, lighting, thresholds, clutter and software, none of which is measured in the cited material.
  • Before the first run, clear cables, small objects and fragile items regardless of which mapping system you choose. The product pages do not substantiate superior obstacle avoidance for either robot.

Interpreting Shark’s headline performance numbers

Shark publishes several percentages for RV2610WA. They are useful only with their stated baselines and test conditions:

Claim How Shark defines it What it does not prove
30% better carpet cleaning Matrix Clean compared with RV2610WD single-pass cleaning in a level-loop sand test It is not a comparison with the Roomba Combo i5, and the page does not state the test year.
50% better edge cleaning CleanEdge Detect compared with RV2610WD with CleanEdge turned off It does not establish an advantage over iRobot’s edge cleaning.
99.97% filtration down to 0.3 microns Shark’s stated HEPA filtration claim for the base It is not a whole-machine allergen-removal test or a cross-brand measurement.
100 scrubs per minute Shark’s stated sonic-mopping rate Scrub frequency alone does not predict stain removal, water use or pad durability.

Use these figures to understand what Shark is promising about its own design, not to declare that it beats the Combo i5. iRobot’s cited page does not provide equivalent test numbers for a direct mathematical comparison.

Maintenance and consumables

Routine work on the Shark

  • Empty the bagless base when its debris container reaches the level specified in the manual; the “up to” capacity statement is not a guaranteed interval for every household.
  • Rinse and reuse the supplied mop pads as directed, and allow them to dry fully before storage.
  • Use only the cleaner and dilution guidance approved for the exact model. Shark lists starter solution and Matrix cleaner accessories, but compatibility should be verified before substituting another formula.
  • Inspect the brush roll, side brushes, sensors and filter regularly. The cited product page does not specify a universal replacement schedule.

Routine work on the Combo i5

  • Swap between the dry bin and Combo Bin according to the floor plan; keep the wet bin from sitting with stagnant water after a mop run.
  • Wash or replace the microfiber pad according to iRobot’s care instructions and let it dry before storage.
  • Use the extra filter supplied in the box as a spare while the used filter is cleaned or replaced.
  • If you own the standard i5, empty its onboard debris container manually. Automatic emptying applies to the separately identified i5+ configuration.

Consumable availability and fit can change. Match replacement pads, filters and cleaning solution to the full model code, not merely to “Matrix” or “Combo.”

Setup plans that avoid common mistakes

Before running the Shark RV2610WA

  1. Confirm that the robot and dock label both identify RV2610WA or the exact model you purchased.
  2. Place the self-empty base on a clear, level section of floor with room for the robot to approach and leave.
  3. Install the reusable mop pad and add only the approved solution and water mixture described in the manual.
  4. Run the mapping process with floors clear of cords, clothing and movable obstacles.
  5. Open the Shark app after mapping and use the Matrix Mop mode when you want the documented sonic-mopping routine. Review the map before sending the robot into rooms with rugs or delicate flooring.
  6. After mopping, remove and rinse the pad, then check the robot’s underside for hair or debris before the next run.

Before running the Roomba Combo i5

  1. Verify whether your package is the standard I517020 Combo i5 or an i5+ bundle with Clean Base.
  2. Connect the robot to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network; iRobot lists that band as required for setup and operation.
  3. Start the mapping run with the vacuum bin installed and doors open to the rooms you want mapped.
  4. When you are ready to mop, fill and install the Combo Bin, attach the microfiber pad and remove or roll up rugs.
  5. Alternatively, use the app or a voice assistant to select only rooms without carpets while the Combo Bin is installed.
  6. Replace the Combo Bin with the dry vacuum bin before carpet cleaning, then wash and dry the mop pad after use.

App labels can change with software updates. The durable rule is to verify the installed bin and the rooms selected for each run before pressing start.

Which robot suits a particular home?

Choose the Shark Matrix Plus RV2610WA when:

  • You want sonic mopping as the defining mop feature and prefer the manufacturer’s Matrix Mop app mode.
  • You want the cited package’s bagless self-empty base rather than buying a separate dock configuration.
  • You value a published LiDAR-mapping specification and do not need a documented room-by-room carpet exclusion workflow.
  • You are comfortable washing reusable pads and emptying a bagless debris container.

Choose the standard Roomba Combo i5 when:

  • You prefer an interchangeable bin that lets you keep a dry vacuum setup for carpet and install the wet bin for hard floors.
  • Room-directed cleaning and Imprint Smart Mapping fit the way you divide your home.
  • You can remove rugs or select non-carpeted rooms during mop runs.
  • You already use a 2.4 GHz network and accept manual debris emptying on the standard i5.

Consider the i5+ configuration instead when:

Your priority is iRobot’s automatic debris disposal. Confirm that the listing explicitly includes the Clean Base and identifies the i5+; the standard Combo i5 package should not be assumed to contain it.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Write down your floors. Estimate the share of hard flooring, low-pile rugs and thick carpets. The more rugs you have, the more important the Combo i5’s bin-and-room procedure becomes.
  2. Decide whether emptying is the chore you most want to avoid. The cited Shark package includes a bagless self-empty dock; the standard i5 does not.
  3. Pick the mop behavior you can maintain. Shark emphasizes sonic scrubbing and reusable pads. iRobot emphasizes a replaceable wet bin and microfiber pad.
  4. Check your network and app habits. The Combo i5 requires 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. For either robot, plan to review maps and room selections instead of assuming the first map is perfect.
  5. Verify the box contents. Match the model code, dock, bin, pads, filter and cleaner to the listing. Do not rely on a product-family headline.
  6. Ignore unsupported winner claims. No cited source measures both robots under the same dirt load, floor mix, battery cycle or obstacle course.

Limitations you should keep in mind

The available material does not establish current prices, promotions, stock, warranty parity, noise levels, measured runtime, pet-hair performance, obstacle avoidance, app reliability or long-term durability. Those factors can matter in a purchase, but adding them here would turn assumptions into facts. Check the retailer and manufacturer pages on the day you buy for current availability, exact accessories and regional terms.

Likewise, Shark’s test percentages use its own comparison models and conditions, while iRobot’s page focuses on product operation rather than equivalent laboratory metrics. A specification such as LiDAR, a 100-scrub-per-minute rate or a 60-day capacity statement should be read as a documented feature or manufacturer claim with a defined limit, not as proof of superiority in your rooms.

Bottom line for your floor plan

Buy the Shark Matrix Plus RV2610WA if its included bagless self-empty base and sonic-mopping design solve the chores you care about most. Buy the standard Roomba Combo i5 if room mapping and a switchable vacuum/mop bin better match your routine, while planning around rugs whenever the Combo Bin is installed. If automatic emptying is non-negotiable, compare the i5+ configuration specifically rather than assuming the standard i5 includes its dock. The right answer is the robot whose documented workflow you will follow consistently; the available evidence does not support naming a universal cleaning winner.
