Global stocks fell on 8 October 2026 because a sharp oil-price jump revived inflation and supply fears, while borrowing costs remained restrictive despite a one-day dip in the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield. New concern about the debt needed to build AI infrastructure added pressure to expensive technology shares. The S&P 500 lost about 0.5% and the Nasdaq nearly 1.3%.
What happened in markets
The session was broadly risk-off. Brent crude settled 4% higher at $104.28 a barrel. The S&P 500 fell approximately 0.5%, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq dropped nearly 1.3%. Losses were steeper in several Asian markets and moderate in Europe.

| Market | Session move | Context |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | About -0.5% | U.S. large-cap equities |
| Nasdaq | About -1.3% | Technology-heavy U.S. index |
| Nikkei 225 | -1.4% | Japan |
| KOSPI | -2.6% | South Korea |
| STOXX 600 | -0.75% | Pan-European shares |
The move came even though the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield eased 5 basis points to 5.227% after strong demand at a 30-year Treasury auction. That decline was too small, and too specific to the U.S. session, to reverse the broader high-rate environment.

Bond yields did not move in lockstep. U.S. yields pulled back after the auction, but euro-zone borrowing costs rose as the oil increase intensified inflation concerns. Investors therefore saw a temporary U.S. rate relief alongside renewed pressure on European rates and the possibility that central banks would need to keep policy tight.
#1 Best Overall
At 5.227%, the 10-year yield remained high in absolute terms. A single-day decline changes the discount rate used to value future corporate profits only marginally; it does not erase months of tighter financial conditions. Higher yields make long-duration growth stocks more sensitive to valuation changes, so the Nasdaq suffered more than the broader S&P 500.
How the oil jump pressured shares
Geopolitical and hurricane supply risks
Reuters attributed Brent’s rise to renewed concern about the war in the Middle East and possible supply disruptions from a hurricane approaching the U.S. Gulf Coast. A move above $100 a barrel signals that investors are pricing a meaningful risk to available supply, not merely stronger day-to-day demand.
Inflation and central-bank risk
Oil feeds directly into fuel and transport costs and indirectly into the price of manufactured goods and services. If that increase persists, inflation can take longer to return to target. Markets consequently raised the risk that interest rates would stay high or rise again, offsetting the benefit of the lower Treasury yield.

The oil shock also creates a growth problem: households and companies pay more for energy, leaving less money for other spending and investment. Equity investors must therefore discount both weaker demand and a potentially higher policy rate.
Why AI financing became a second source of anxiety
Investors were also watching the amount of borrowing required to expand high-end AI computing. Reports cited by Reuters said Broadcom was seeking about $50 billion of financing, while SpaceX was considering $30 billion of investment-grade debt plus $10 billion in loans.
Those figures do not prove that the projects will fail. They do show why AI-related stocks are increasingly sensitive to credit markets as well as to chip demand. Debt brings interest and repayment obligations; if rates remain elevated or AI revenues take longer to arrive, financing costs can reduce returns on the infrastructure build-out. The prospect of very large capital raises also raises questions about future cash flow, leverage and the supply of capital available to other technology companies.
Strong earnings did not produce a broad rally
LSEG data cited by Reuters projected 30.6% year-over-year growth in S&P 500 quarterly earnings, with technology and energy expected to lead. That outlook helped keep the index near record levels, but gains have been concentrated in a relatively small group of companies.

Barbalat described this as an unusually narrow rally: the S&P 500 was roughly 15% higher year to date while more than one-third of its constituents were lower. A falling forward price-to-earnings ratio alongside a rising index can indicate that earnings are catching up with prices, but weak breadth means the headline index is masking losses in many individual shares.

What markets expect from the Federal Reserve and ECB
Interest-rate futures implied a 17% probability of another Federal Reserve move in October and nearly an 83% probability of a December increase. Goldman Sachs analysts wrote that they expected a second Fed hike in December but saw a strong chance the Fed would ultimately decide that further tightening was unnecessary.
These probabilities are market pricing, not a promise from policymakers. A sustained oil rally could push expectations toward more tightening by keeping inflation elevated; a sharper slowdown could have the opposite effect.
Europe faced a separate policy question. UBS Global Wealth Management multi-asset strategist Kiran Ganesh said markets would be watchful if the bond-market pressure spread and that monetary intervention would be most comforting, referring to possible European Central Bank bond purchases. Bank of France head Emmanuel Moulin said France’s economic situation was serious but did not require ECB help. The euro strengthened against the dollar as the rise in euro-zone yields stalled.

Why chip shares fell despite strong company results
Semiconductor results were strong, but investors traded the stocks on valuation, rates and financing risk rather than on the latest headline number alone.
Samsung Electronics
Samsung reported a 783% increase in third-quarter operating profit to 107.4 trillion won. Its shares nevertheless fell 2.4%. The reaction shows that markets can sell a stock when expectations, valuation or the wider technology risk premium outweigh an excellent reported quarter.
TSMC
TSMC reported record third-quarter revenue of 1.49 trillion Taiwan dollars, 50% above the same period a year earlier. Its shares fell 1.35% as investors focused on the cost of expanding capacity, sensitivity to global rates and the possibility that very strong results were already reflected in the price.

Quick Recap
What the session means for investors
- Daily moves and quarterly fundamentals are different horizons. One risk-off session does not invalidate the projected 30.6% earnings growth, but it can reprice the multiple investors are willing to pay for those earnings.
- Watch the whole yield curve and region. The U.S. 10-year’s five-basis-point decline did not mean that European borrowing costs or global financial conditions had eased.
- Track oil’s duration, not just its peak. A brief spike can fade; a sustained move above $100 would be more consequential for inflation expectations and central-bank decisions.
- Separate AI demand from AI financing. Revenue growth can remain strong while leverage, interest expense and capital-spending requirements make equity valuations more fragile.
- Check market breadth. A near-record index with more than one-third of constituents down is less resilient than a rally supported by most stocks.
