The 192 × 64 recommendation applies to the normal modern header. The 300 × 64 recommendation applies only when the extended header layout is selected. Use the dimensions that match the placement rather than forcing one file into every slot.
What the two SharePoint logo fields do
Site logo
The site logo is the larger image displayed in the header. It can be non-square and may use transparency, which makes a horizontal wordmark practical. A file prepared at 192 × 64 pixels fits Microsoft’s standard guidance without relying on browser scaling.
Site logo thumbnail
The thumbnail is a separate, square image. SharePoint uses it in places that need a compact icon, including search results and the site card. Microsoft describes the thumbnail as required, including when no full site logo has been uploaded. Prepare a real square design: a cropped wordmark often becomes unreadable at 64 pixels.

Extended-layout logo
The extended header gives the logo more horizontal room and has its own 300 × 64 pixel recommendation. Do not assume the standard 192-pixel-wide asset will fill that layout cleanly; design or export a version with the extended proportion when that header is enabled.
Choose dimensions by header layout
Compact, minimal or standard headers
Modern SharePoint sites commonly start with the compact header. Microsoft documents minimal, compact, standard and extended choices, although the choices exposed in your tenant can vary. For a normal header, create the 192 × 64 logo and the separate 64 × 64 thumbnail.
Extended headers
For an extended header, use 300 × 64 pixels for the logo. Keep important lettering and marks inside the visible safe area; very thin strokes can disappear when the header is viewed on a small screen.
High-density screens
Microsoft’s communication-site guidance recommends doubling the standard dimensions for best display in high resolution. That means 384 × 128 pixels for the rectangular logo and 128 × 128 pixels for the square thumbnail. Treat this as the communication-site high-resolution recommendation, not a replacement that overrides every site’s upload guidance. Exporting at double size while preserving the same aspect ratio lets SharePoint and high-density displays downsample the artwork cleanly.

File formats and site-type restrictions
Microsoft’s current image-sizing guidance lists PNG, JPEG and SVG for the standard logo and thumbnail, and JPEG, PNG and SVG for the extended logo. It also states that SVG is not allowed on group-connected sites. A separate communication-site guide lists JPG, GIF and PNG and recommends doubled dimensions for high-resolution display. These lists differ by page and context, so follow the formats offered by the upload control for your particular site and tenant.
- PNG: useful for transparency and sharp logos.
- JPEG/JPG: suitable for photographic or non-transparent artwork.
- SVG: useful for scalable marks where the site permits it; do not use it on a group-connected site when Microsoft’s restriction applies.
- GIF: listed in the communication-site guidance, but not as a universal format guarantee.
Keep a master vector or high-resolution raster file so you can export both the rectangular logo and the square thumbnail without repeatedly enlarging a small image.
How to change a SharePoint site logo
- Open the Microsoft 365 team or communication site.
- Select Settings → Change the look → Header.
- Open Display, find Site logo, and choose Change.
- Select the rectangular logo file, then save the header changes.
- Use the separate thumbnail control to upload the 64 × 64 (or communication-site high-resolution 128 × 128) square file.
- Check the header, search result and site card at desktop and narrow viewport widths.
If Change the look or the logo controls are missing, you may lack customization permission. Microsoft advises contacting a site owner. In GCC, GCC High, DoD, Gallatin and Sovereign clouds, Microsoft notes that minimal and extended layouts are temporarily removed from the Change the look panel; verify the options your tenant currently exposes.
Group-connected versus independent sites
Microsoft 365 group-connected team sites
A group-connected SharePoint team site uses the same logo as its Microsoft 365 group. Changing the SharePoint site logo therefore changes the group logo as well. Coordinate the rectangular and square artwork with the group’s owners before saving.

Communication sites and non-group-connected team sites
On these sites, changing the logo affects the site itself rather than a connected Microsoft 365 group. You can therefore tailor the branding to that site without changing a group identity.
Design a logo that remains legible
For the rectangular logo
- Use a simple horizontal lockup with adequate contrast against the selected header color.
- Leave internal padding so letters do not touch the image edge.
- Use transparency when the mark needs to sit naturally on the header background.
- Check the result at 192 × 64 and at the smaller rendered sizes SharePoint may use.
For the square thumbnail
- Use the symbol or abbreviated mark rather than squeezing a long wordmark into a square.
- Center the artwork and leave a consistent margin on all sides.
- Test it in search and site-card contexts, where it may appear much smaller than the upload dimensions.
Export checklist
- Standard: 192 × 64 logo plus 64 × 64 thumbnail.
- Extended: 300 × 64 logo plus the separate square thumbnail.
- High-resolution communication-site option: 384 × 128 logo plus 128 × 128 thumbnail.
- Confirm the selected file type is accepted by the site.
- Keep text and important shapes inside the safe area and inspect on a high-density display.
Common problems and fixes
The logo looks blurry
The source may be smaller than the rendered area or repeatedly resaved as a compressed JPEG. Re-export from the master artwork at the recommended dimensions; for a communication site that needs high-resolution treatment, use the doubled dimensions.
The wordmark is cropped
You may have uploaded a square thumbnail where the rectangular logo is expected, or selected an extended header without a wide enough asset. Upload the 192 × 64 standard logo or 300 × 64 extended logo in the correct field.
The thumbnail looks like a shrunken banner
Create a dedicated 64 × 64 square icon (or 128 × 128 for the documented high-resolution communication-site option). Do not rely on automatic cropping of a long wordmark.

SVG cannot be selected
On group-connected sites, Microsoft’s image-sizing guidance restricts SVG. Export the same artwork as PNG or JPEG, subject to the formats offered in your tenant.
The new logo changes another Microsoft 365 logo
That behavior is expected for a group-connected team site because SharePoint and the Microsoft 365 group share the logo. Confirm the branding with group owners before making the change.
The layout option is unavailable
Tenant cloud and service changes can affect which header layouts appear. Use the layouts currently shown in Change the look; in the named sovereign environments, Microsoft has temporarily removed minimal and extended choices from that panel.

FAQ
Is 192 × 64 the minimum upload size?
It is Microsoft’s recommended standard logo dimension, not a statement that every smaller file will be rejected. Smaller artwork is more likely to appear soft or be enlarged.
Can I use one file for the logo and thumbnail?
You can technically derive one from the other, but the placements have different shapes. A dedicated square thumbnail is more legible and follows Microsoft’s separate-field guidance.
Does responsive page imagery use these dimensions?
No. Microsoft’s responsive-image guidance for pages and web parts does not establish one fixed width or height. The dimensions here are for site-header logo assets.
