New Zealand criminal defence lawyer and ultra-runner Shannon-Leigh Litt completed 1,000 consecutive days of ultra-distance running on 26 September 2026, according to 1News. Each day involved roughly 50–51 kilometres: Guinness World Records describes the requirement as at least 50 km, while 1News reports 51 km a day. Guinness’s current record page lists Litt at 1,000 days, but the public page does not establish precisely when the achievement was formally adjudicated.

What did Shannon-Leigh Litt accomplish?

Litt ran an ultra-marathon distance every day for 1,000 consecutive days. Guinness World Records says she began on 1 January 2024 and defines the daily distance for the record as at least 50 km (31.06 miles). Guinness’s current record page lists her achievement at 1,000 days; 1News reports that she completed day 1,000 on 26 September 2026 and describes her daily distance as 51 km.

The reported figures differ slightly because one source gives the record threshold and the other rounds or reports the daily run as 51 km. It is therefore more accurate to describe the challenge as roughly 50–51 km per day than to imply every source uses an identical distance. Multiplying Guinness’s minimum by 1,000 gives a baseline of 50,000 km, but that is a calculation from the published minimum, not an official cumulative total for Litt’s runs.

How did she fit the running around her legal work?

Early starts and long days

1News reports that Litt commonly began between 1am and 4am to fit the run around her criminal defence work. In the final months, a run could take as long as eight hours, according to the same report. An earlier profile by Now to Love put her runs at five to 7.5 hours, depending on terrain and sleep, and said she sometimes listened to legal research while running.

A routine that could bend around work

Work sometimes required Litt to rearrange her running plans, Now to Love reported. The daily distance still had to be completed, so the routine was demanding in both time and consistency. Litt told 1News, “I just got into a routine.” She described the later part of the streak as mentally harder and said she wanted to complete the daily 51 km obligation.

Why set 1,000 days as the finish line?

Litt did not describe the challenge as an open-ended streak. In a May 2026 interview with Jason Pine on Weekend Sport, she said she had wanted to take on a multi-day challenge and that having a target and a defined finish helped her keep going. She had initially aimed for 200 days, Guinness says; later, 1,000 became the goal. Now to Love’s April 2026 profile and the May interview both reported 26 September as her planned endpoint.

After finishing day 1,000, Litt told 1News she ran a marathon the following day. That was shorter than the daily ultra-distance, but not a full day off. In the May interview, she had already joked that she might run a marathon on the next day because it was nine kilometres less.

What conditions did she face?

According to 1News, Litt ran in nine countries during the challenge. Its report describes flooding, heat reaching 40°C, and near-hypothermic conditions in Austria. It also says the record rules required her to keep each run within New Zealand’s 24-hour clock while she was abroad, adding a time-zone constraint to an already fixed daily commitment.

Trail Runners Connection describes a substantial evidence-gathering process for the attempt: filming for at least 15 minutes each day, collecting GPS data, obtaining two witness statements per day, and taking as many as 20 photographs per run. That is the profile’s account of Litt’s documentation; it should not be treated as a definitive statement of current Guinness rules.

Is she officially a Guinness World Records holder?

Guinness’s current page lists Litt at 1,000 days, and its explanatory text says “as of 26 September 2026.” However, the page’s separate “WHEN” field displays 26 February 2026, which conflicts with that text and with 1News’s report of the finish on 26 September. In its report published after the finish, 1News said Litt was still aiming to become a Guinness World Record holder. The public record page now reflects the 1,000-day result, but these sources do not establish the exact date formal adjudication occurred.

What the achievement does—and does not—say about running gear

Running 50–51 km a day for 1,000 days makes the story relevant to anyone thinking about ultra-distance training and equipment, but the available reporting does not identify Litt’s shoe brands, models, or other gear choices. Her achievement is not evidence that a particular product is suitable for other runners, and it should not be taken as medical guidance or proof that such a schedule is safe for everyone.
