Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor most emergency kits, a multi-input hand-crank, solar, and USB light is a more flexible replacement for a shake flashlight. It can be topped up without disposable batteries, store considerably more energy than a simple shake mechanism, and—on selected models—charge a phone. A compact shake light still has a place as a low-output, nearly maintenance-free backup, but it is not the strongest primary light for a prolonged outage.
The right choice depends on what you need the light to do: illuminate a room, project a beam outdoors, operate after several days without sun or an outlet, or provide enough reserve energy for a phone call. The models and figures below are published specifications; the principal comparison source labels its numbers “Not tested,” so treat them as manufacturer claims rather than independent performance results.

Shake flashlights: motion creates a little power
A shake flashlight uses linear induction: moving a magnet through a coil generates electricity that is stored in a small energy element and released to the LED. Because the user supplies the energy through motion, it can work when batteries, a wall outlet and sunlight are unavailable. The trade-off is capacity. A small storage element supports a modest LED and short periods of useful light, not the energy reserve of a larger rechargeable battery.

PATH’s guide describes the NightStar jP as a “no-battery, shake flashlight” and lists 15-lumen output. That makes the class suitable for finding a keyhole, checking a fuse box or keeping as an emergency light in a glove box. It is a poor substitute when you need to light a room, signal for a long period or recharge a phone.
Hand-crank lights: a dynamo is usually a top-up source
Turning a crank drives a small generator. Modern products normally route that energy into an internal rechargeable battery, so the light can run without continuous cranking. You can still generate power during an outage, but the practical question is how much energy the battery stores and how efficiently the light uses it.
Disaster Rally summarizes the limitation clearly: “A crank is a top-up mechanism on almost every model here rather than the primary supply—the stored capacity is what determines how long the light runs unattended.” In other words, a few minutes of cranking can restore useful reserve, but a crank is not a substitute for a large battery or a fully charged device before the outage.

A photovoltaic panel replenishes an internal battery when it receives useful light. Solar charging is silent and requires no grid connection, making it valuable for multi-day outages, camping and emergency kits stored away from outlets. It does not, however, provide dependable instant power at night or in a dark room. The light’s nighttime runtime depends on energy collected earlier and the battery’s capacity.
Place a solar-equipped light where its panel receives direct, unobstructed daylight when practical. A window, shade, cloud cover and seasonal daylight can all reduce the rate of charging. Solar should therefore be treated as a replenishment path, not as proof that the light will operate indefinitely.

USB-rechargeable lights: the most predictable preparation
USB charging lets you fill the battery from a wall adapter, computer, vehicle adapter or power bank before a trip or forecast outage. It is the easiest method to control: connect the light, wait for its charge indicator, and store it ready. USB alone does not create energy during an outage unless another charged USB source is available, which is why combination products add a crank or solar panel.
Stored energy, runtime and what the numbers mean
Capacity is the key difference between a simple shake light and a rechargeable emergency light. A crank can add energy on demand, but the battery determines how long the light runs unattended. Runtime also changes with brightness, beam mode, battery age and temperature; a published maximum at the lowest setting should not be interpreted as the runtime at full output.
| Published item | Stored-energy figure | Published light or runtime figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal Zero Torch 500 | 4,400 mAh | 500 lumens | Large enough for a combination flashlight/lantern design and phone charging, subject to the maker’s actual conversion losses and charging limits. |
| Goal Zero Lighthouse 400 | 4,400 mAh | 400 lumens | Similar stated storage to the Torch 500, with the design emphasis on broad lantern illumination. |
| prepareme resqLite | 600 mAh lithium battery | Not stated | Compact reserve; expect less stored energy than the 4,400 mAh products and plan charging accordingly. |
| Goal Zero USB-rechargeable lantern example | Not stated | 7–170 hours, depending on brightness | The wide range illustrates how brightness selection changes endurance; the source does not state a battery capacity. |
| NightStar jP | No battery; shake-powered | 15 lumens | There is no stored-battery capacity to compare; output and light duration depend on the energy produced by shaking and the internal storage element. |
Milliamp-hours are not a complete measure of usable energy because voltage, regulator efficiency and battery chemistry matter. Use the figures as within-product specifications, not as a promise that two products with the same mAh rating will deliver identical phone-charge or runtime results.
Lumens are only part of the lighting decision
Lumens describe total light output. They do not tell you whether the beam is narrow and far-reaching or wide and evenly diffused. A flashlight optic can put useful light down a path, while a lantern diffuser can make a smaller area comfortable to occupy. For a power outage, broad, low-glare illumination may be more useful than the highest headline lumen number.
When a focused flashlight beam is better
- Walking outside, checking a breaker panel or inspecting a vehicle.
- Signaling in one direction or preserving dark adaptation by aiming the beam away from people.
- Keeping the device compact for a pocket, glove box or tool kit.
When a lantern pattern is better
- Lighting a room, tent, table or cooking area without holding the light.
- Allowing several people to work at once.
- Running a lower setting for longer rather than using a bright, narrow beam continuously.
The Torch 500 combines flashlight and lantern functions. The Lighthouse 400 is the better fit when broad area lighting is the priority. The USB-rechargeable lantern example demonstrates why a selectable brightness range can matter more than a single maximum-output number for overnight use.

Phone charging and emergency extras
Phone charging is useful for an emergency call, text message or weather update, but it should be viewed as a reserve function. Converting a light’s battery energy to a phone’s battery involves losses, and using the light and charging a phone at the same time reduces the reserve available for both. Keep the phone’s battery saver enabled, charge only when necessary and confirm the light’s cable and port compatibility before an outage.

The Torch 500 and Lighthouse 400 list phone charging. The resqLite has a built-in phone-charging port. The NightStar jP is a simple shake light and is not presented as a phone charger. A radio, SOS beacon or other mode can justify a larger emergency device, but verify that a particular model actually includes those functions; do not infer them from the word “emergency” in a product name.
Model-by-model guidance
Goal Zero Torch 500: the broadest single-device replacement
Choose the Torch 500 when you want one unit to cover the most situations: a flashlight beam, lantern-style area lighting, hand-crank generation, solar replenishment, USB charging and phone charging. Its published 500-lumen output is the highest in the listed models, while its 4,400 mAh storage gives it a substantially larger reserve than the compact resqLite. That combination makes it the most versatile option for a household emergency kit or vehicle kit, provided you are comfortable carrying a larger device than a basic shake flashlight.
prepareme resqLite: compact, multi-input insurance
The resqLite is designed for portability. It measures 133 × 52 × 32 mm, weighs 100 g and uses a 600 mAh lithium battery. It accepts hand-crank, solar and USB charging and includes a built-in phone-charging port. Pick it when a small, light device that can be replenished in several ways matters more than maximum brightness or long high-output operation.
Its instructions recommend shaking the unit for at least one minute monthly to extend battery life. Follow that maintenance interval, keep the charging port protected and periodically confirm that the crank and solar input still work.

Goal Zero Lighthouse 400: area lighting first
The Lighthouse 400 is a lantern-oriented choice. It uses hand-crank and USB inputs, lists 4,400 mAh of storage and supports phone charging. Select it over a narrow-beam flashlight when the main job is lighting a room, tent or shared work surface. If you routinely need to search outside or direct light at a distant object, a flashlight-shaped model or a second focused light may be more practical.
USB-rechargeable lantern example: long low-mode endurance
The Goal Zero USB-rechargeable lantern example is listed as a 120-lumen flashlight with a stated runtime from 7 to 170 hours depending on brightness. That spread is useful for planning: maximum output is for short tasks, while a low setting can cover many nights. Because the source does not state battery capacity, compare it by its documented runtime and charging method rather than guessing its stored energy.
NightStar jP: the simplest no-battery backup
The NightStar jP represents the shake-flashlight class. Its 15-lumen output is modest, but it avoids disposable batteries and an external charging cable. Keep one where a failure is likely to occur before you can reach your main kit—such as a bedside table, car or breaker panel. It complements a larger rechargeable light; it does not replace one when you need sustained room lighting or phone charging.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose by situation
For a household power outage
- Use a lantern-oriented device if several people need to see and work in the same room.
- Prefer a model with a substantial stored battery and USB input so it can be fully charged before the grid fails.
- Keep a shake light as a second source in case the rechargeable unit is misplaced or depleted.
For camping or travel away from outlets
- Select hand-crank plus solar if you expect to be away from a reliable USB source for several days.
- Choose a focused beam for walking and a lantern pattern for camp tasks; one combination device can do both if weight is acceptable.
- Expose the solar panel during daylight and reserve the battery for nighttime rather than assuming the panel will run the light directly.
For phone continuity
- Choose a model that explicitly lists phone charging, not merely USB charging for the light itself.
- Charge the light completely before an event and carry the correct cable.
- Use the phone-charge function for essential communication, then preserve the remaining light battery for navigation and safety.
For the smallest emergency kit
The resqLite offers three charging paths in a 100 g package. If you need the fewest moving parts and can accept modest output, a shake flashlight such as the NightStar jP is smaller in concept and does not depend on a rechargeable battery being maintained.

- Charge from USB. Fill the rechargeable light from a known-good source and confirm the indicator reaches its ready state.
- Test every input. Turn the crank, expose the solar panel to useful light and verify that each method produces a charging indication or additional operation.
- Test each mode. Check the flashlight beam, lantern setting, lowest brightness and any signaling mode the model claims to provide.
- Check phone charging. Use the intended cable and verify that the phone recognizes the connection. Do not wait for an outage to discover a connector mismatch.
- Store it accessibly. Keep the light where you can reach it without searching in darkness, and keep the cable with it.
- Maintain the battery. Recharge periodically according to the manufacturer’s instructions. For the resqLite, include the recommended monthly one-minute shake in your routine.
Common pitfalls and fixes
Expecting the crank to provide unlimited runtime
Cranking is work, and most products use it to top up a stored battery. If the light dies quickly after a full charge, reduce brightness, recharge by USB when available and use the crank to restore reserve rather than trying to operate indefinitely while turning it.

Buying by lumens alone
A high lumen figure can be uncomfortable indoors and may drain the battery faster. Consider beam shape, diffuser design and low-mode endurance alongside maximum output.
Assuming solar works immediately at night
Solar panels collect energy; they do not replace the battery after dark. Charge in daylight and monitor the stored reserve before relying on the light overnight.
Confusing USB input with phone output
A USB port may charge the light, charge another device, or do both. Read the model’s stated functions and test the phone-charging port before storing the unit.
Ignoring maintenance
Rechargeable products can be empty when finally needed if they are stored for months without checking. Add them to a household inspection schedule, keep ports clean and exercise any crank mechanism gently.
How reliable are the published specifications?
The listed lumen, capacity and runtime figures are published specifications. Disaster Rally’s comparison explicitly labels its numbers “Not tested,” and the other figures come from manufacturer or guide pages rather than a common independent laboratory test. Actual performance can vary with brightness, battery condition, temperature, charging source, optical design and phone model.
Use the numbers to compare a model with its own intended role, not to assume laboratory-equivalent performance between brands. Before buying, confirm the current product page for included cables, port types, charging indicators, battery-care limits and availability, because accessories and regional listings can change.
