A “shadowban” is not one universal platform status, and a sudden reach drop alone does not prove that your account has been restricted. Start by checking the platform’s own account-status panel and notices: they can distinguish a recommendation restriction, search filtering, a limited account, or a specific post action from ordinary changes in distribution. Then respond to the stated issue or appeal a decision you believe is mistaken.
What a “shadowban” can mean
People use “shadowban” to describe several different outcomes: a post is missing from search, an account is excluded from recommendations, certain account features are limited, or content is flagged as spam or inauthentic. These are not interchangeable, and the label itself does not identify what happened.

In particular, content can remain permitted on a platform while being ineligible for recommendation. A post may still appear on its author’s profile or be available to followers even as it reaches fewer people through recommendation surfaces. Recommendation eligibility is different from account access: being able to log in and post does not guarantee that every post will be recommended.
How do I know if I’m shadowbanned?
Look for a platform notice or status indicator before drawing conclusions from view counts. Identify the observable symptom: a warning about account features, a post-specific label, missing search results, or simply lower reach. A single search that fails to surface a post—or a video with few views—is weak evidence on its own.

- Account or feature limitation: Look for an in-product message explaining which features are limited and what action is required.
- Recommendation ineligibility: Check for a notice that identifies affected content or says the account or posts are not eligible for recommendation.
- Search visibility: Check whether the post is public and whether settings, filters, or search relevance could explain the result.
- Lower reach without a notice: Treat this as a distribution change to investigate, not proof of a hidden penalty.
Why are my posts not showing up in search?
X
X says search does not include every post. Protected posts, an unconfirmed email address, sensitive-content filtering, and search relevance can all affect whether a post appears. A missing post or hashtag in one search therefore does not establish account-wide suppression. See X’s search guidance and its recommendation policy.
X also describes post-level visibility actions that may exclude a post from search, trends, recommendations, or timelines, or limit discovery to the author’s profile. If X labels a post and you believe the label is incorrect, use the appeal route associated with that action. Details are in X’s enforcement-options guidance.

TikTok
TikTok says an account marked ineligible for recommendation, after repeated posts unsuitable for the For You feed, may have its account and posts excluded from that feed and become harder to find in search. TikTok says it will notify the user in Inbox and Profile, identify affected content, and provide an appeal option in the notice. Its For You feed eligibility standards also distinguish recommendation eligibility from removal: content may remain on TikTok but not qualify for the For You feed, while eligible content may still be found through search or by following.

Reddit says posts, comments, messages, or a profile that do not appear as expected may be associated with a spam or inauthentic-activity flag. A ban for a rule violation and a security lock are different situations with their own explanations and next steps. Check account messages and Reddit’s account-status guidance. Reddit notes that some appeals about spam, inauthentic activity, or ban evasion may not come with an inbox message, so the absence of a notice does not settle the question. Instagram and Meta
Meta’s published explanation says recommendation guidelines may be stricter than the rules for content allowed to remain on its platforms. That supports the general distinction between permitted content and content eligible for recommendation; it does not establish a current Instagram menu path or appeal timeline. Why did my reach suddenly drop?
Reach can fall for reasons other than a restriction. Search and recommendation systems do not guarantee that every post will be surfaced, and audience response can vary. TikTok specifically identifies low community engagement as a possible explanation for a low-view video. On X, search settings and relevance can keep a post out of a particular result even without an account-wide action.
Use the platform’s own status information to separate a documented eligibility or enforcement decision from a change in ordinary distribution. If no notice or status warning identifies a problem, the reach change alone is not enough to diagnose a shadowban.

Where to check account status
TikTok: Account check
Open TikTok Studio or the Safety Center and go to Account check. TikTok says this check can show restrictions affecting login, posting, commenting, profile edits, and direct messages. A checkmark indicates no issue for that feature; a warning indicates an issue. For recommendation ineligibility, inspect Inbox and Profile for the notice and the content it identifies.
X: limited-state notice and search settings
If X displays a limited-state message, follow its in-product instructions. X may ask you to verify your phone number or email address, or take another specified action. A limited state may last for a stated period and may filter activity from search and notifications; the support guidance does not give one duration for all cases. For an absent search result, also check whether the post is protected, your email is confirmed, and sensitive-content settings apply.
Reddit: account messages and status
Review account messages and the account-status explanation for the specific issue shown. Reddit describes spam or inauthentic-activity flags separately from bans and security locks, and some cases may not generate an inbox message.

How to respond to a suspected restriction
- Name the symptom. Record whether you see an explicit warning, a limited-account message, a post-specific recommendation label, a search-only problem, or only lower-than-usual reach.
- Check status and notifications. Review the platform’s status area and relevant notices. Note the stated reason, affected features or content, and any action the platform requests.
- Rule out ordinary visibility causes. On X, check post protection, email confirmation, sensitive-content filtering, and search relevance. On TikTok, do not treat low views alone as proof of For You feed ineligibility.
- Address the stated issue. If the platform identifies content or behavior, review the relevant rules and make a correction when warranted. Do not delete or alter content solely because reach fell if the platform has not identified a violation.
- Appeal a decision you believe is mistaken. Use the appeal option attached to the notice or the platform’s official process. Identify the decision you are challenging and give concise, relevant context. X describes appeals for certain limited states and post-visibility labels; TikTok provides an appeal option in its recommendation notice; Reddit describes appeals for relevant account actions.
- Recheck status, not just views. Look for a changed notice or eligibility status rather than relying on day-to-day reach as the sole measure of whether an account action changed.
How long does a shadowban last?
There is no universal duration established by the platform guidance. X says a limited state may apply for a specified time, but the cited support page does not give one period for every case. TikTok says it may automatically restore an account to good standing depending on the amount of unsuitable content, without publishing a fixed recovery timeline on the cited page. Neither source promises that reach will return on a particular schedule.
