Shadow of the Erdtree in New Game Plus: Recommended Level and Weapon Upgrades

What level should I be for Shadow of the Erdtree in NG+? There is no official, source-backed character level that guarantees a suitable entry into the expansion. Your readiness depends more on whether your build has the attributes, survivability and weapon investment to function than on a single rune total. Enter when your main stats support your chosen weapon or spell setup, your Vigor can absorb mistakes, and your primary weapon is substantially upgraded.

For weapons, use the official maximums as reference points rather than minimum requirements: regular weapons can reach +25 with Smithing Stones, while unique weapons can reach +10 with Somber Smithing Stones. If the Realm of Shadow feels harsh, first explore for Scadutree Fragments and Revered Spirit Ashes. Those DLC-specific blessings are the publisher’s recommended way to strengthen your character inside the expansion.

There is no verified universal NG+ entry level

Bandai Namco’s official material explains Elden Ring’s stats, weapon scaling and the expansion’s blessing system, but it does not publish an NG+-specific recommended level, weapon upgrade target or adjustment for each New Game Plus cycle. That means a number presented as “the” correct level would be a community rule of thumb, not a publisher recommendation.

Character level alone is also a poor measure of readiness. Two characters at the same level can have very different results if one has enough Vigor and a well-scaled, highly upgraded weapon while the other has spread points across attributes that do not help its equipment. NG+ makes the question even more dependent on your build, because the official sources retrieved here do not establish how a recommended entry level should change from one cycle to another.

Silent Hill 2 (PS5)

  • The main protagonist James Sunderland searches for clues in the namesake town, after receiving a mysterious letter from his wife Mary… who has long been dead

Use a readiness check instead of chasing a number. You are in a sensible position to enter when all of the following are true:

  • Your main damage stat or stat pair meets the requirements of your chosen weapon, catalyst or spell plan.
  • Your weapon’s current upgrade level is close to what you can reasonably achieve before entering, rather than being left at an early-game level.
  • Your Vigor and defensive setup let you survive ordinary mistakes while you learn unfamiliar enemies.
  • You have a complete loadout: a primary damage option, a backup for resistant targets, healing and any buffs or utility your build actually uses.
  • You are willing to collect Scadutree Fragments and Revered Spirit Ashes if the expansion’s enemies overwhelm you.

This framework applies whether you are entering immediately in NG+ or arriving later in another cycle. It avoids pretending that a raw level threshold has been validated when it has not.

How to judge your character’s stats

Prioritize the attributes your equipment uses

Weapon scaling is tied to a weapon’s attribute requirements, scaling grades and upgrade level. A character with high Strength gains little from a weapon that primarily scales with Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith or Arcane unless the weapon’s configuration gives those attributes meaningful returns. Before entering the DLC, open your equipment and verify that your offensive points are concentrated in the attributes that improve your actual attacks.

Bandai Namco describes approximate Strength and Dexterity softcaps at 20, 55 and 80. These are not hard stops: they indicate points at which gains generally become less efficient, and the exact return also depends on the weapon’s scaling. A build can still benefit from points beyond one of these values, but moving a point into Vigor, Endurance or a second relevant damage attribute may produce more practical survivability or damage for your setup.

Use Vigor and defenses as part of the damage plan

There is no official Vigor number attached to entering Shadow of the Erdtree in NG+. Instead, test your character in late-game areas of the base game. If ordinary enemies can kill you before you have time to heal, or a single mistake regularly ends a boss attempt, more health and defensive preparation will help you learn the expansion faster than additional points in a diminishing-return damage stat.

Check your equip load before you leave. A weapon that looks powerful on paper is a poor choice if it forces a slower roll, prevents your preferred armor combination or consumes so much stamina that you cannot attack and retreat safely. Endurance also affects how comfortably you can block, cast, sprint and carry a backup weapon. These are practical checks, not claims that the DLC has a published level gate.

Weapon upgrade targets: use the ceilings correctly

Regular and unique weapons

Weapon track Maximum upgrade Material named in official guidance How to interpret it before NG+
Regular weapons +25 Smithing Stones +25 is the upgrade ceiling, not an official minimum for entering the expansion. Bring your main weapon as close to that ceiling as your available resources and build justify.
Unique weapons +10 Somber Smithing Stones +10 is the upgrade ceiling, not a publisher-certified NG+ threshold. A substantially upgraded unique weapon is preferable to an underdeveloped one that merely has a higher character level behind it.

Upgrades increase a weapon’s base damage and can improve its scaling grade. That combination is why weapon level often matters more than several extra character levels placed in an attribute the weapon barely uses. Compare the attack power and attribute scaling shown on the equipment screen after each upgrade, and make sure the result improves the attacks you actually perform.

Match the upgrade to your build

For a Strength-focused character, choose a weapon whose requirements and scaling reward Strength in the affinity or configuration you use. A Dexterity build should perform the same check for Dexterity; hybrid and casting builds need to verify both halves of their damage formula. Do not judge a weapon solely by its name, rarity or special skill. Confirm that its moveset, range, stamina cost and scaling fit your combat habits.

If you switch weapons frequently, prioritize one dependable main weapon first. Splitting scarce materials across several choices can leave every option too weak for the content you are entering. Keep a second weapon only when it covers a real problem, such as a damage type or range your primary option cannot provide. The official +25 and +10 figures tell you how far each track can go; they do not require every weapon in your inventory to be maxed.

Scadutree Blessings are the expansion’s separate progression

Shadow of the Erdtree adds player-strengthening progression inside the Realm of Shadow. The publisher’s official gameplay guidance says: “If you get stuck in the game, explore various areas and look for the items ‘Scadutree Fragments’ and ‘Revered Spirit Ashes,’ which are necessary to strengthen your character in the Realm of Shadow.” These collectibles are therefore part of the intended difficulty curve, not optional decorations to ignore while farming base-game runes.

What each blessing supports

  • Scadutree Blessing: this is the blessing to seek when your own attacks feel weak or incoming damage feels excessive in the Realm of Shadow.
  • Revered Spirit Ash Blessing: this supports your summoned spirit companions, so it matters for builds that rely on them during difficult encounters.

Patch 1.12.2, released in 2024, revised the Scadutree Blessing curve. The first half of upgrades became more effective, later increases became more gradual, and the final level received a slight increase. The practical lesson is to collect early fragments rather than assuming that only late-game exploration will make a difference. The patch changed how the bonuses are distributed across the progression; it did not create an official NG+ entry-level recommendation.

Explore before you farm more runes

If you are dying quickly after entering the DLC, inspect the map for routes, side areas and overlooked items before spending hours on rune farming. The official guidance specifically points to exploration for both blessing item types. A higher character level may add health or damage, but it does not replace the Realm of Shadow’s own blessing progression. Treat a difficult area as a signal to look for fragments, Revered Spirit Ashes and a better approach angle, not automatic proof that your NG+ level is wrong.

A practical pre-entry checklist

  1. Record your actual build. Write down the primary weapon, affinity or configuration, main damage attributes, casting tool if applicable, and whether you depend on a spirit summon. This prevents you from preparing around a weapon you are not really using.
  2. Confirm requirements. On the equipment screen, check that your attributes meet the weapon’s requirements and that your preferred attacks receive the scaling you expect. If a requirement is unmet, the weapon is not ready regardless of your overall level.
  3. Upgrade one main weapon. Take a regular weapon toward the +25 ceiling or a unique weapon toward +10 as far as your materials and progression reasonably allow. Compare the displayed attack power and scaling after each upgrade.
  4. Stress-test survivability. Fight late-game base-game enemies using your normal healing, armor and talisman setup. If you routinely die in one or two mistakes, adjust health, defenses, equip load or your defensive tactics before adding more offensive points.
  5. Prepare a backup answer. Carry a second damage type, range option or status strategy only if it solves a problem your main weapon cannot. Keep enough stamina and equip-load margin to use it without compromising your movement.
  6. Enter and map deliberately. When you reach the Realm of Shadow, explore side paths and collect Scadutree Fragments and Revered Spirit Ashes before concluding that your character level is inadequate.

Comparing common preparation approaches

When choosing between two builds or deciding where your next levels should go, compare them on the same four axes: survivability, attribute-to-weapon match, upgrade progress and blessing progress. The following framework helps you make that comparison without inventing a universal level target.

Preparation approach Survivability check Weapon and stat check Upgrade check DLC progression check
Single-stat physical build Ensure Vigor and stamina are not sacrificed for marginal damage beyond a softcap. Use a weapon whose active scaling rewards the selected physical stat. Concentrate materials on one regular or unique main weapon. Collect Scadutree Fragments when ordinary hits feel underpowered.
Hybrid physical build Prevent the second damage stat from consuming points needed for health or endurance. Verify that both attributes contribute to the chosen weapon’s current configuration. Do not assume a weapon’s base classification proves it scales well with your spread. Use blessing exploration before endlessly reallocating levels.
Casting-focused build Keep enough health and defenses to survive while creating casting distance. Check the catalyst or seal, spell requirements and the weapon used when enemies close in. Upgrade the tools that produce your real damage, not only a backup blade. Revered Spirit Ash Blessing is relevant if your plan depends on summons.
Summon-dependent build Make sure you can survive long enough to support the summon and heal. Use a personal weapon that remains effective when an enemy ignores the summon. Upgrade both your main damage source and the relevant support tool where resources permit. Collect Revered Spirit Ashes and Scadutree Fragments rather than relying on runes alone.

The table is a decision aid, not a set of official class recommendations. The official material establishes how stats, scaling, upgrades and blessings work; it does not rank one build type as the correct NG+ choice.

What to do when the DLC feels too difficult

If your attacks deal too little damage

  1. Check whether you are using the weapon with the attributes you actually leveled.
  2. Compare the weapon’s current upgrade level with the +25 regular or +10 unique ceiling.
  3. Look for Scadutree Fragments and apply the available Scadutree Blessing upgrades.
  4. Only then consider additional rune levels or a respec that moves points into attributes your weapon demonstrably scales with.

If enemies kill you too quickly

  1. Collect more Scadutree Fragments, since the blessing improves your effectiveness in the Realm of Shadow.
  2. Recheck Vigor, armor, talismans, equip load and elemental defenses.
  3. Change your approach: use spacing, blocking, dodging, ranged attacks or a summon instead of trading hits.
  4. Explore another route and return after gaining blessing progress rather than treating the first difficult boss as a mandatory level check.

If your summon is not surviving

Look for Revered Spirit Ashes and apply that blessing. Also verify that your own weapon and defensive setup can keep pressure off the summon. The official guidance identifies Revered Spirit Ashes as a way to strengthen characters’ spirit support in the Realm of Shadow; it does not provide a cycle-specific summon level target.

What remains unknown about NG+ cycles

The official sources used for these recommendations do not specify how the expansion’s recommended entry level changes in NG+, how each cycle changes its difficulty, or whether blessing progress resets or carries over between cycles. Do not present an exact cycle-by-cycle level chart, a guaranteed NG+ weapon minimum or a blessing carryover rule as established fact without a source that explicitly documents it.

That uncertainty does not prevent a practical decision. Carry your tested build into the expansion, make the weapon and attribute checks above, and use the Realm of Shadow’s blessing progression to respond to difficulty. If a community guide gives a numeric range, treat it as an unofficial rule of thumb for that guide’s assumptions, not as an official requirement.

Ownership and access

Shadow of the Erdtree is an expansion that requires Elden Ring. The publisher lists editions that bundle the base game and the DLC as well as the expansion itself. Before buying or starting, confirm that the listing matches your platform and region and that your account owns the base game. Ownership is a prerequisite for access, not a recommended character level.
