You do not own ELDEN RING
Choose Shadow of the Erdtree Edition. The package contains the original ELDEN RING game and its expansion, so it avoids purchasing the base game and downloadable content separately. A Shadow of the Erdtree Deluxe Edition contains the same game content and adds a digital artbook and digital soundtrack for the base game and expansion.

You already own the base game
Look for the standalone Shadow of the Erdtree expansion on the platform where your copy of ELDEN RING is registered. Buying a bundle that includes the base game again can be unnecessary, although a bundle may still be worth considering if its local price or format is more suitable.
You are buying for Nintendo Switch 2
Use the listing named ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition. Bandai Namco announced this Switch 2 bundle in August 2026 as a package containing the original game and Shadow of the Erdtree, with additional edition content described by the publisher. It is a separate SKU and name, not a renamed version of the earlier Shadow of the Erdtree Edition.

Do you need ELDEN RING to play Shadow of the Erdtree?
Yes. Shadow of the Erdtree is an expansion rather than a self-contained game. Bandai Namco’s official product listing states: “Shadow Of The Erdtree requires ELDEN RING base game to play.” A standalone DLC purchase therefore has value only when the same account and compatible platform also have access to the base game.
This requirement explains the otherwise similar names. The regular edition is a two-part game package for new players; the standalone listing is an add-on for people who already own the first part. The Deluxe Edition changes the extras, not the underlying game requirement.
Supported platforms
Bandai Namco’s June 21, 2024 expansion announcement lists five original platform families. The original ELDEN RING announcement from February 25, 2022 lists those same families for the base game.

PlayStation and Xbox generations
The publisher confirms platform availability, but the announcements reviewed do not promise that a purchase on one generation automatically supplies the other generation. They also do not establish save migration, cross-buy or free-upgrade rights. If you are moving from PS4 to PS5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, read the entitlement language attached to your exact store page or physical package rather than relying on the console family name alone.
Steam PC
For PC, the original announcement identifies Steam as the distribution platform. A Steam purchase is tied to the account that completes the transaction, so check that you are signed into the intended account and that the store page shows the desired bundle rather than the standalone add-on.
Nintendo Switch 2
Switch 2 availability is represented by Tarnished Edition, not by an announcement that the older PlayStation, Xbox or Steam products transfer to Nintendo hardware. Treat it as a platform-specific bundle and inspect its own contents, release information and regional terms.

Why Tarnished Edition is easy to confuse with the other bundles
“Edition” appears in several product names, but the names identify different packages. Shadow of the Erdtree Edition is the established base-game-plus-expansion bundle for the original platform families. Tarnished Edition is the Switch 2 bundle announced in 2026. The publisher also announced new Tarnished Pack content for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam; that content announcement is not the same thing as the Switch 2 product.
Do not infer identical bonuses from similar wording. The official comparison specifically identifies the Deluxe Edition’s digital artbooks and soundtracks, while the Switch 2 announcement describes additional edition content without establishing that those digital bonuses are included.
How to buy the correct version
- Identify your hardware. Record the exact console generation or confirm that you are buying for Steam. “PlayStation,” “Xbox” or “ELDEN RING” alone is not enough to identify an entitlement.
- Check your library. Determine whether the account you will use already owns the base game. If it does not, start with a bundle that explicitly lists both game and expansion.
- Match the product type. New players should compare Shadow of the Erdtree Edition and Deluxe Edition. Existing owners should open the standalone DLC listing first.
- Read the content panel. Confirm that the page names the base game, the expansion and any artbook or soundtrack promised by the edition. For Switch 2, look specifically for Tarnished Edition.
- Match account and region. Make sure the purchase is made in the same console or Steam account that will play it and that the country or store region is correct.
- Confirm the format. For a disc, check the console family and the package’s regional labeling. For a code, verify the activation region and the platform named on the code or retailer page.
- Review upgrade language. If changing console generations, look for an explicit statement about cross-generation access, rather than assuming it from owning the base game.
- Keep the game updated. Bandai Namco’s June 2024 version 1.12 patch notes document support for the expansion. Installing current updates before launching reduces the chance that an older game build will fail to recognize the add-on.
Physical, digital and regional checks
A bundle name does not by itself tell you whether a listing is a disc, a download code or a direct digital license. Those formats can have different region and account conditions. Read the product’s format field, included items and activation territory before ordering.

There is no established universal rule that every disc or code works across regions. A disc may be usable on hardware bought elsewhere while its downloadable add-on or code follows a different store region. Because the available publisher information does not verify every retailer’s regional policy, treat compatibility as a listing-specific question.
For digital purchases, the console or Steam account is central: the expansion must be attached to the account that owns or can launch the base game. For physical purchases, check whether the base game is on the disc, supplied as a code or omitted entirely; a box marked “DLC” may not contain the game.

Buying the DLC alone without the base game
Symptom: the store shows Shadow of the Erdtree but not ELDEN RING in the contents. Fix: return to the bundle comparison and choose Shadow of the Erdtree Edition or Tarnished Edition for the applicable platform.
Buying the bundle twice
Symptom: your account already owns ELDEN RING, but the cart contains a package that includes it again. Fix: compare the standalone expansion, checking that it is for the same platform and store region.
Assuming cross-generation access
Symptom: a PS4, PS5, Xbox One or Xbox Series listing does not clearly state what the purchase grants. Fix: do not infer a free upgrade, cross-buy entitlement or save transfer; use only the rights explicitly written on that listing.

Confusing Tarnished Pack content with Tarnished Edition
Symptom: a page mentions Tarnished Pack items but does not identify a Switch 2 bundle. Fix: distinguish the content announcement for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam from the Switch 2 product named Tarnished Edition.
Expecting Deluxe bonuses in every bundle
Symptom: a listing says “Edition” but does not mention artbooks or soundtracks. Fix: treat those extras as Deluxe-specific unless the exact product description includes them.
Which package is the sensible value for each buyer?
First-time player on PS4, PS5, Xbox or Steam
The standard Shadow of the Erdtree Edition is the uncomplicated choice because both required game components are listed together. Select Deluxe only when the digital artbooks and soundtracks justify its local price and the listing confirms they are supplied.

The standalone expansion avoids repurchasing the base game. Verify that your existing copy and the add-on belong to the same platform family, account and region before completing the transaction.
New Switch 2 owner
Start with Tarnished Edition and inspect its own description. Do not use the older bundle’s name as a search shortcut, and do not assume that bonuses documented for Deluxe Edition appear in the Switch 2 package.
Player changing hardware
Treat the move as an entitlement check, not merely an edition choice. Publisher material establishes availability by platform but does not establish cross-buy, save transfer or upgrade rights, so confirm those terms with the store page associated with the new hardware.
Bottom line
Choose the bundle that explicitly contains both the base game and expansion when starting from zero: Shadow of the Erdtree Edition on the original platforms, or Tarnished Edition on Nintendo Switch 2. Choose standalone Shadow of the Erdtree when the correct account already owns ELDEN RING. Deluxe adds digital artbooks and soundtracks, not a different gameplay requirement. Platform, region, format and entitlement language on the exact listing determine whether the purchase will work.
