Shader Cache Is Making a Game Stutter or Crash: Fixes to Try

Yes, a damaged, mismatched, or constantly evicted shader cache can make a game stutter, crash at launch, run more slowly, or show visual artifacts. However, shader compilation itself is also a normal source of first-run hitching. The safest diagnosis is staged: identify whether the problem is driver-wide or limited to one game, clear only the relevant cache, allow shaders to rebuild, then repair the game installation and graphics settings if the symptoms persist.

Use the NVIDIA procedure only on NVIDIA systems, use Radeon controls and documentation on AMD systems, and treat the next launch after a reset as a rebuild session that may stutter temporarily.

What a shader cache does—and why it can stutter

Games describe materials, lighting, shadows, post-processing, and other effects with shader programs. Before the graphics processor can draw those effects, the game and graphics driver must compile the programs into a form suitable for the installed GPU and graphics API. NVIDIA notes that shader compiles are normally performed each time a game runs and are a common cause of gameplay stuttering.

A shader cache stores compiled results so later launches can reuse them instead of compiling every shader again. AMD describes the same purpose: its Shader Cache stores frequently used shaders to improve loading times and reduce CPU use. In a healthy installation, the first visit to a new area or effect may still cause a brief hitch, but repeated play should be smoother because the compiled work is available.

Why a normal cache can still produce a hitch

Compilation may occur when a game starts, loads a level, changes a graphics option, encounters a new effect, or receives an update. A driver installation commonly deletes the old cache because the compiled output may no longer match the new driver. The first run after that installation therefore has to rebuild data and can stutter even though nothing is broken.

A cache limit that is too small creates another pattern. When the driver evicts entries that are still needed, the game repeatedly recompiles them. This can feel like recurring traversal stutter rather than a single rough first launch. Increasing the cache limit, where the driver exposes that control, or returning to a sensible driver-default setting is preferable to deleting the cache repeatedly.

When corruption is a credible suspect

NVIDIA states that damaged Shader Cache files may cause an application or game to crash on launch, show lower performance, or display visual artifacts. That makes a reset reasonable when symptoms began immediately after a driver change, a game update, a graphics-setting migration, or an interrupted shutdown. It does not prove that every hitch is a cache fault: CPU limits, storage delays, shader bugs in the game, overlays, unstable overclocks, and API-specific problems can look similar.

Match the remedy to the symptom

Before deleting anything, decide whether the fault is broad or isolated. This avoids a driver-wide reset when only one game’s files are damaged.

Observed pattern Most useful first target Why
Several games stutter or crash after a graphics-driver update Driver shader cache A driver change can invalidate or damage compiled data shared across games.
One game fails while other games work That game’s files, patch state, launcher cache, or graphics API path The problem is more likely local to the title or its selected API.
Only the first run after clearing or updating stutters Allow a rebuild; do not clear again immediately Compilation is expected while the cache is repopulated.
Launch crash plus corrupted textures or unusual rendering after a driver change Relevant driver cache reset, then file verification The combination is consistent with mismatched or damaged compiled data.
Stutter occurs only with one API, such as DX12 or Vulkan That API’s game settings and cache behavior Different APIs and games manage shader data differently.
Integrated graphics system has a launch or rendering problem Game-recommended windowed mode and lower shader detail, then file repair Steam lists these as useful tests for some integrated-graphics cases.

Record the game name, GPU model, driver version, selected API (DX11, DX12, or Vulkan), exact crash text, and any cache location shown by the driver or game. That information makes later support requests actionable.

Before resetting: quick checks that prevent unnecessary work

  • Restart the computer after a driver installation or major game update. A pending restart can leave old and new components in an awkward state.
  • Confirm that the game’s graphics driver is the one you intend to use, especially on a laptop with integrated and discrete GPUs.
  • Undo experimental overclocks or undervolts temporarily. An unstable GPU can crash during shader compilation and mimic cache corruption.
  • Note whether the problem is a one-time hitch, repeated traversal stutter, a launch crash, a visual artifact, or all four. Each points to a different branch.
  • Close the game before removing cache files. Files in use may not delete cleanly.
  • Do not assume a larger cache is automatically better. A cache that is too small can evict entries, but changing limits without observing the symptom can obscure the diagnosis.

How to reset the NVIDIA shader cache safely

The following sequence is for a Windows system using NVIDIA’s current application controls. It clears driver-wide compiled data, so every affected game may need to compile shaders again.

1. Turn the cache off and restart

  1. Open the NVIDIA App.
  2. Open its graphics or global settings and locate Shader Cache Size.
  3. Set Shader Cache Size to Off, apply the change, and reboot Windows.

The restart ensures that processes holding cache files are closed before deletion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Delete the NVIDIA cache contents

After restarting, open File Explorer and enter each path in the address bar. Delete the contents inside the folders, not the parent folders themselves:

  • %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalNVIDIADXCache
  • %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalNVIDIAGLCache
  • %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalNVIDIA CorporationNV_Cache

If Windows says a file is in use, close the NVIDIA App, game launchers, browsers using hardware acceleration, and monitoring tools, then try again. Do not delete unrelated folders under AppData.

3. Restore the driver default and reboot again

  1. Open the NVIDIA App after the folders are empty.
  2. Return Shader Cache Size to Driver Default.
  3. Apply the setting and reboot once more.

NVIDIA’s current support guidance lists a 16 GB value for the driver-default cache on that support page. Treat that as the value documented for that current guidance, not as a universal recommendation for every driver release, GPU, or Windows configuration.

4. Rebuild patiently

Launch the affected game and expect the first run to be less smooth while shaders compile. Play through the area that previously stuttered, exit normally, and launch again. A successful reset should reduce repeat compilation; it cannot repair a game bug, an unstable driver, or a failing GPU.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Alternative: NVIDIA’s DDU cache-only route

NVIDIA also documents a Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) option labeled Clean Shader Cache (Only). Use that route only if you are comfortable with DDU and follow the current NVIDIA procedure exactly. It is a targeted cache operation; full driver removal is a higher-impact step and is not a first-line response to ordinary shader stutter.

AMD systems: use Radeon controls, not NVIDIA folders

AMD’s Shader Cache is designed to compile and store frequently used shaders so games load faster and the CPU does less repeated work. AMD software enables the optimized behavior by default, and it can be disabled globally through the current Radeon software controls.

AMD and NVIDIA do not use the same folder layout. Do not copy the NVIDIA paths above onto an AMD system or delete arbitrary directories in an attempt to imitate the NVIDIA reset. Open the installed Radeon software, check its current Graphics or Advanced settings for the Shader Cache control, and use the reset or clear option documented for that software version and game.

How to test an AMD cache suspicion

  1. Write down the current global graphics settings and the affected game’s per-game profile.
  2. In Radeon software, locate the Shader Cache setting and follow the version-specific option for clearing or resetting it.
  3. Restart Windows if the software requests it.
  4. Run the game once to rebuild, accepting temporary compilation stutter.
  5. Run it a second time through the same scene and compare the symptom.

If the failure affects only one title, proceed to that title’s file verification and patch checks rather than repeatedly resetting a global AMD cache.

DirectX shader-cache controls and their limits

DirectX 12 distinguishes between application-managed caches and working-directory caches. The specification defines controls for enabling, disabling, and clearing cache data, but the visible location and wording depend on the game and its implementation. A game may keep its own pipeline-library files beside its executable, in a user profile, or through a launcher; a driver may maintain separate compiled data.

That distinction explains why clearing a Windows or driver cache does not always remove every shader file used by a DX12 game. If the game exposes a Clear shader cache, Reset pipeline cache, or shader-precompilation option in its own settings, use that control first for a game-specific problem. If no such control exists, use the game’s documented cache location rather than deleting random DirectX or system folders.

DX11, DX12, and Vulkan symptoms

  • DX11: the driver often handles more of the compilation path, so a driver cache reset can be relevant when several titles are affected.
  • DX12: the application has greater responsibility for pipeline state and cache files. A title patch or its own pipeline cache can matter as much as the driver cache.
  • Vulkan: shader and pipeline caches may be managed by the game, launcher, driver, or a combination. Keep the API name in your notes and follow the game’s reset control.

Do not change APIs solely to hide a one-time rebuild hitch. Use an alternate API as a diagnostic test only when the game supports it and you can return to the original setting.

Repair the game and Steam components

When clearing the driver cache does not solve a one-game problem, repair the title’s installation before escalating to more invasive driver work.

Verify installed files in Steam

  1. Open Steam and go to Library.
  2. Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files.
  4. Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.

Verification can replace damaged or missing files. It does not guarantee that a third-party mod, configuration file, or shader pipeline cache is repaired; remove or disable mods using the game’s supported method before testing again.

Clear Steam’s download cache only for the right reason

Steam’s Clear Download Cache command addresses launcher download and update state, not every compiled shader file. Use it when an update is stuck, repeatedly fails, or Steam’s download metadata appears damaged:

  1. Open Steam’s Settings.
  2. Choose Downloads.
  3. Select Clear Download Cache and sign in again if Steam asks.
  4. Retry the pending update, then verify the game files.

Do not use this command as a substitute for a driver-cache reset. It may remove queued download data while leaving the game’s shader cache untouched.

Install the current game patch

Shader compilation and pipeline behavior can change with a game update. Check that Steam has completed the title’s current patch, then launch once after the update has finished. If the game recently changed its rendering API or shader system, the first post-update run may rebuild a large cache.

Use the game’s own precompilation and graphics options

Enable shader precompilation when available

Some games offer a startup step that compiles shaders before entering the main menu. Let it complete without switching applications or forcing the game closed. Precompilation moves work from gameplay into a controlled loading phase; it does not eliminate all runtime compilation, especially after a patch or a new graphics option.

Lower shader detail as a diagnostic

Temporarily lower Shader Quality, Effects, or a similar setting and repeat the same scene. If the hitch disappears, the setting may be exposing a game-specific shader path or a hardware limit. This is a reversible test, not proof that the cache was corrupt. Restore settings one at a time after the behavior is stable.

Test windowed mode on integrated graphics

For some integrated-graphics systems, Steam recommends testing windowed mode and lower shader detail when a game has launch or rendering trouble. Use the game’s display menu or its supported launch option, then restart the title. If windowed mode works while exclusive fullscreen does not, retain that result in your support notes; display mode, memory pressure, or an API-specific path may be involved.

What not to do first

  • Do not clear the cache every time the game hitches. Each reset guarantees another rebuild and can make normal first-run stutter look like a permanent fault.
  • Do not delete folders from another vendor. NVIDIA paths are not AMD instructions, and a DX12 game’s application-managed cache may be somewhere else.
  • Do not edit the registry based on a forum snippet. Registry changes and broad driver removal carry more risk than the cache controls documented by the vendor.
  • Do not promise yourself that a reset fixes every crash. A crash can come from a game patch, missing file, overlay, API bug, memory instability, or hardware failure.
  • Do not judge the result from the first launch. Compare a second run through the same scene after the rebuild has completed.

A staged troubleshooting plan

  1. Classify the symptom. Note whether it is first-run stutter, repeated traversal stutter, a launch crash, visual corruption, or a single-title failure.
  2. Capture the environment. Record GPU, driver version, Windows edition, game version, API, display mode, and the exact crash message.
  3. Restart after updates. Complete any pending graphics-driver or game installation restart.
  4. Run the narrowest repair. Use the game’s own shader reset or precompilation option for one-game issues; use the vendor cache reset when several games show the same post-driver symptoms.
  5. Allow a rebuild. Launch, load the problem area, exit normally, and test a second run.
  6. Verify the installation. In Steam, use Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files; clear Steam’s download cache only when update state is the problem.
  7. Apply the current patch. Confirm the game and launcher are fully updated.
  8. Test reversible settings. Enable precompilation, lower shader detail, and try windowed mode where relevant, changing one variable at a time.
  9. Compare APIs only if supported. Test DX11, DX12, or Vulkan as a diagnostic and record which path fails.
  10. Escalate with evidence. Send the game name, GPU, driver, API, crash text, reproduction steps, and cache path to the game’s or graphics vendor’s support team.

How to interpret the result

The game is smooth on the second run

The reset likely removed stale data and the initial hitch was rebuild work. Keep the cache enabled and avoid further clearing unless the same symptoms return after a specific update or corruption event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several games remain affected

Check the driver version, global shader-cache setting, overlays, and GPU stability. A cache reset that changes nothing across multiple titles is evidence against a simple stale-cache explanation.

Only one game still crashes

Prioritize Steam verification, the current patch, the game’s own cache or precompilation controls, and its selected API. Collect the crash text and reproduction steps before attempting higher-risk driver changes.

Visual artifacts remain after a clean rebuild

Persistent artifacts are not normal cache-rebuild behavior. Test default clocks and settings, another API if supported, and another game. If artifacts continue, seek vendor support rather than repeatedly deleting cache files.

Bottom line

Shader cache problems are real, but so is ordinary shader-compilation stutter. A cache reset is most justified when a driver change is followed by launch crashes, lower performance, or visual artifacts, or when several games fail together. Clear the cache with the controls and paths for your GPU vendor, reboot, let the cache rebuild, and judge the second run. For a single game’s continuing problem, verify its files, install its current patch, use its precompilation or cache controls, and test reversible graphics settings before considering invasive driver or registry work.
