Sewer pipe corrosion is usually a chemistry-and-material problem, not simply “old age.” Hydrogen sulfide in wastewater can be converted by bacteria into sulfuric acid above the flow line, attacking susceptible pipe walls. Soil chemistry and galvanic action can corrode the outside of buried iron or steel. The right repair depends on how much wall remains, whether the pipe is still structurally round and aligned, the length of the damage, and access for equipment.
Persistent sewage odor, backups, leaks, recurring smooth holes in a yard, sinkholes, or a camera view showing exposed aggregate or missing wall justify a professional CCTV inspection. A sound host pipe may be relined without a continuous trench; a collapsed, badly displaced, or structurally failed pipe generally needs excavation and replacement.

What sewer pipe corrosion is and why it matters
Corrosion is the chemical or electrochemical loss of pipe material. In a sewer, it can occur inside the pipe, outside it, or both. Internal corrosion is commonly associated with wastewater gases and the biological conversion of those gases into acid. External corrosion occurs in the buried environment, where moisture, salts, dissimilar metals, and electrical potentials can attack the pipe wall.

Loss of wall thickness reduces the pipe’s ability to carry soil loads and resist pressure. A line may continue to drain while becoming structurally unsafe. Eventually, holes admit soil, roots, and groundwater; joints move; the ground above can settle; and sewage can escape. A blockage-clearing service can restore flow temporarily, but it cannot replace metal, concrete, or cement that has already been lost.

How wastewater causes internal corrosion
Hydrogen sulfide and sulfuric acid
Wastewater that lacks oxygen can generate hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The gas leaves the liquid and occupies the air space in the sewer. On the moist, unsubmerged upper surface of a pipe, bacteria can oxidize H2S into sulfuric acid. That acid attacks susceptible materials, especially where the pipe crown is repeatedly exposed to damp sewer air rather than submerged in flowing water.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency identifies direct attack by corrosive gases such as H2S and sulfur dioxide, together with bacterial oxidation of H2S to sulfuric acid in unsubmerged pipe sections, as primary causes of internal corrosion. Low-flow conditions, warm temperatures, long retention times, and poor ventilation can increase the opportunity for this process, but a field investigation is needed to establish what is happening in a particular line.
Where damage appears first
Acid attack often begins at the crown and gradually produces roughness, exposed aggregate, thinning, and holes. The invert can also be damaged by abrasive grit or aggressive liquids. Service connections and joints are vulnerable because they create discontinuities where leakage and infiltration can start.

Buried pipe is surrounded by soil that can hold water and dissolved salts. Differences in oxygen concentration, moisture, pH, and electrical potential create corrosion cells on metallic surfaces. Where different metals are connected, galvanic currents can accelerate attack on the less noble metal. Washington State’s Department of Ecology states that galvanic action causes most corrosion in buried iron and steel pipe.
External corrosion can remain hidden until the wall is severely weakened. Excavation, a CCTV survey, or a localized failure may be the first indication. A repair specification should therefore consider both the internal camera findings and the soil or groundwater conditions around the pipe, rather than treating an internal coating as a complete solution to an external problem.
Which sewer materials resist corrosion?
Material does not determine the outcome by itself: wastewater chemistry, temperature, flow, soil, joints, loading, and installation quality all matter. The EPA’s material descriptions provide this practical comparison.

| Pipe material | Behavior in acid and sewer environments | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Vitrified clay | Virtually immune to acid attack | Brittle; joints can fail, allowing roots, infiltration, or displacement. |
| Cast iron | Susceptible to sulfuric acid, hydrogen sulfide, and ordinary oxidation | Internal crown loss and external soil corrosion can occur together. |
| Steel | Susceptible to sulfuric acid, hydrogen sulfide, and oxidation | Buried galvanic and soil corrosion are significant concerns. |
| Reinforced concrete | Susceptible to acid corrosion | Acid can expose aggregate and reinforcement; structural capacity falls as section is lost. |
| Asbestos-cement | Susceptible to acid corrosion | Condition and handling requirements must be addressed under local rules. |
| PVC, polyethylene (PE), and ABS | Generally resistant to acid corrosion | Detergents, organic solvents, fats, and oils can cause other forms of attack. |
“Corrosion resistant” does not mean failure-proof. A PVC line can crack, deform, separate at joints, or be damaged by roots and excavation. Conversely, a cast-iron line with limited surface rust may remain serviceable if its wall and joints are sound. CCTV condition grading is more useful than age or material alone.

Warning signs that need investigation
Odor, backups, and slow drainage
Raw-sewage odor indoors or around a cleanout, repeated backups, gurgling, or a persistent slow drain can indicate a break, open joint, obstruction, or damaged section. Odor by itself does not prove corrosion, but it is a reason to check for leakage and failed seals rather than repeatedly using chemical drain products.
Leaks, wet ground, and “rat holes”
Portland identifies raw sewage, sewage odor, and recurring smooth holes in a yard as signs of sewer breaks or leaks. A smooth-sided depression can form when escaping wastewater carries soil into a void around the pipe. Wet patches, unusually lush vegetation, settlement, or a sinkhole over the line are also reasons to keep people away from the area and arrange prompt assessment.
Camera-visible wall loss
A camera operator may report rust scale, pitting, cracks, roots, displaced joints, standing water, or a rough crown. In concrete, exposed aggregate indicates that the cement matrix has been lost. Seattle Public Utilities grades cracks, roots, and exposed aggregate by severity; severe exposed aggregate with holes is treated as full structural failure requiring replacement.
Public or street symptoms
Failures beneath a driveway or street can produce pavement problems, sinkholes, or sewage backups. San Francisco Public Utilities Commission notes that more than 30% of its sewers are at least 100 years old (page accessed in 2026), illustrating why municipalities and property owners must manage condition rather than rely on assumed service life.

EPA rehabilitation guidance emphasizes corrosion surveys and condition information before a renewal method is chosen. A consumer sewer-inspection camera or drain-camera kit can help locate a problem on an accessible private line, but a contractor’s coded CCTV survey is normally needed for engineering decisions, permitting, and a warranty.
A practical inspection sequence
- Confirm which party owns the affected section and locate cleanouts or access points.
- Have the line cleaned enough for the lens to see the wall; record any material removed.
- Run CCTV from each practical access point, noting distance, clock position, depth, and direction.
- Grade defects and distinguish a blockage from actual wall loss or structural movement.
- Check connections, downstream and upstream sections, and any parallel or abandoned line.
- Use the findings to define a repair length and method; do not specify a liner solely from a drain snake report.
Repair choices and when each makes sense
Compare options using six decision axes: structural condition, defect length, host-pipe geometry and access, final hydraulic diameter, surface disruption, and local code or permit requirements.
| Method | Best suited to | Main limitation | Excavation profile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spot repair or short-section replacement | One or a few isolated defects with sound pipe on both sides | Does not address unexamined or widespread corrosion | Localized excavation |
| Cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) | Defective or aging, substantially continuous host pipe that can accept and support a liner | Requires cleaning, access, geometry checks, and allowances for reduced diameter and connection reinstatement | Usually access pits or existing access points rather than a continuous trench |
| Spiral-wound lining | Suitable, accessible sewers needing a continuous trenchless liner | Host condition, shape, annular fit, and local availability control feasibility | Limited surface opening compared with open cut |
| Fold-and-form lining | Suitable host pipes where the folded liner can be inserted and expanded to fit | Not appropriate for collapse, severe displacement, or unusable geometry | Limited surface opening compared with open cut |
| Spray or spun-cast coating | Surfaces that can be cleaned and prepared; protection against corrosion or abrasion, and in some systems added strength | Surface preparation, curing, thickness, and structural design must be verified | Access openings, generally no full-length trench |
| Open-cut replacement | Collapsed sections, severe displacement, extensive structural loss, or a host unsuitable for lining | Excavation, shoring, restoration, and utility conflicts | Full trench over the replacement length |
Can a corroded cast-iron or concrete sewer be relined?
Often, yes, but only when the existing pipe remains a suitable host. CIPP, spiral-wound, and fold-and-form systems place a new pipe or structural liner inside the old one. The host must be clean enough for bonding or fitting, sufficiently open for insertion, and stable enough to resist soil and groundwater loads during and after installation. The design must account for the liner’s thickness, the resulting hydraulic diameter, bends, access, and reconnection of every service.
Cast iron can be a candidate when corrosion is localized or distributed without collapse, gross ovality, or long sections of displaced joints. Concrete can be a candidate when the wall is rough or chemically attacked but the remaining shape and structure can support the rehabilitation system. A coating may protect a prepared surface from further acid or abrasion; it is not automatically a replacement for missing structural wall.
Relining is generally unsuitable where the pipe has collapsed, is severely flattened, has large voids, or has excessive joint displacement. For concrete, holes accompanied by severe exposed aggregate are classified by Seattle Public Utilities as full structural failure, a condition that warrants replacement rather than a cosmetic treatment. The CCTV report and, where needed, engineering calculations should establish whether the host can be rehabilitated.

A short excavation is sensible when one connection, joint, or small section is defective and the surrounding pipe is sound. HUD guidance describes excavating to sound pipe and splicing in PVC with a suitable coupling. The replacement section must be properly aligned, supported, and sealed, and the trench must be backfilled in controlled lifts so later settlement does not break the repair.

Spot repair is also useful when a camera identifies a discrete hole or root-opened joint but a full-length liner would be disproportionate. It should not be used to hide a pattern of repeated defects; multiple “small” holes may indicate a line that needs complete rehabilitation or replacement.
When open-cut replacement is unavoidable
Excavation is the normal remedy for a collapsed section, a pipe that has lost its shape, or excessive displaced joints that prevent a liner from passing or fitting. PUB guidance states that collapsed sewers and excessive joint displacement can require long, deep trenches and a new pipe. Replacement is likewise indicated when the remaining wall cannot carry loads, when voids have formed around the line, or when the route or grade must be changed.
Before digging, the contractor should locate utilities, determine groundwater and soil conditions, plan shoring and access, obtain permits, and define how pavement, landscaping, or structures will be restored. A trenchless proposal that still requires extensive excavation for a failed host may offer little practical advantage over replacement.
Cleaning, root cutting, and temporary measures
A drain auger or sewer snake can clear a blockage and is appropriate for restoring flow while an inspection is arranged. HUD cautions that the problem may return if its source is not corrected. Root cutting removes an obstruction but does not rebuild a thinned wall; aggressive cutting can also leave an already weakened pipe vulnerable.
Do not rely on chemical drain cleaners to treat corrosion. Reduce water use during an active backup, keep children and pets away from contaminated ground, and arrange professional cleanup when sewage has escaped. These steps limit immediate risk but do not substitute for a condition survey and permanent repair.

- Request the pre-repair CCTV video and a post-repair acceptance video.
- Require the contractor to identify the defect length, host-pipe material, design assumptions, and expected finished diameter.
- Ask whether cleaning, roots, groundwater, service connections, and access pits are included in the scope.
- Verify licenses, permits, traffic or right-of-way requirements, and utility-location responsibilities in your jurisdiction.
- For a liner or coating, obtain the product system, resin or coating type, curing method, thickness, structural design basis, and warranty terms.
- Confirm how failed installation, uncured resin, wrinkles, blocked connections, or post-installation leaks will be corrected.
No universal price or service-life number is defensible for sewer-corrosion work. Cost and durability vary with material, wastewater chemistry, soil, geometry, access, excavation depth, local labor, permitting, and the length and severity of damage. Compare proposals that describe the same repair limits and deliverables, not just a headline price.
Quick Recap
A decision path for homeowners and facility managers
- Stabilize the situation: limit discharge if sewage is backing up and address immediate contamination.
- Document symptoms: record odors, backups, wet spots, settlement, sinkholes, and dates of recurrence.
- Inspect: obtain a professional CCTV survey with condition grading and footage references.
- Classify the defect: separate blockage, joint/root problems, corrosion-related wall loss, and structural collapse.
- Select the least disruptive adequate remedy: use spot repair for isolated damage, a liner or coating for a suitable host, and open-cut replacement when the host has failed.
- Verify the result: review post-work CCTV, confirm restored connections and flow, and retain permits, photographs, and warranty documents.
