The game launched in 2019, but the announced follow-up at ZA/UM was cancelled, so there is no confirmed canonical sequel today.
What game is this about?
Disco Elysium is a 2019 isometric detective RPG from ZA/UM. You play a police officer who wakes with a devastating hangover, has forgotten his identity and must solve a murder in the district of Martinaise. The investigation is also an attempt to reconstruct who the detective is and what he believes.

That premise sounds like a conventional mystery until the game’s systems start narrating alongside the script. Your skills are competing voices in the detective’s head, your political and personal ideas can alter his outlook, and the city itself can offer information through perceptions that another build would never receive.
Why its storytelling is still so hard to beat
The character sheet is part of the cast
Most RPG statistics describe what a character can do. In Disco Elysium, they also determine what the character notices and how he interprets it. TIME’s 2020 account highlights skills such as Esprit de Corps, which connects the detective to the police institution, and Shivers, which lets the city’s atmosphere intrude as a source of knowledge. A different skill profile does not merely change combat odds; it changes the text you encounter.
#1 Best Overall
- Disco Elysium - The Final Cut is the definitive edition of the groundbreaking role playing game
- Interrogate unforgettable characters, crack murders, or take bribes
- Become a hero or an absolute disaster of a human being - it's all up to you
- Countless tools for roleplaying, a revolutionary dialog system, and an unprecedented freedom of choice found in the base game
- Adds new quests, and for the first time is fully voice acted
Ideas change the detective’s worldview
The game’s idea system turns beliefs into an active layer of role-playing. Ideas can modify skills and the protagonist’s worldview, making ideology, memory and self-image mechanical concerns rather than background flavor. The result is a detective story that can feel genuinely authored by the player even when the major crime remains the same.
Failure is content, not a reload screen
Skill checks can fail without ending the investigation. A missed roll may produce an embarrassing exchange, a new line of reasoning or a different route through a task. Because failure is written into the story, reloading after every bad result can erase some of the game’s most distinctive scenes. The design treats uncertainty as a way to generate narrative rather than as a simple pass-or-fail gate.
Rank #2
Unusually high writing density
The development team’s 2019 figures explain why the game feels almost bottomless:
Recommended Free Tools
| Content measure | Published figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Completionist playthrough | 60+ hours | Estimate from the development team, 2019 |
| Tasks | About 100 | Development-team figure, 2019 |
| Skills | 24 | Development-team figure, 2019 |
| Skill checks | Thousands | The team said there were “literally too many to count,” 2019 |
| Characters | 70 | Partial voice acting, according to the team, 2019 |
| Written text | One million words | Development-team figure, 2019 |
Those numbers matter because they support the central design: the detective’s build, decisions and mistakes all need bespoke writing. The density is not simply a large script; it is a large script connected to variables that can change what appears on the page.
What happened to the sequel?
A direct follow-up was in development at ZA/UM, but its status changed after a period of internal disputes and departures. Senior creators including Robert Kurvitz, Aleksander Rostov and Helen Hindpere left the studio during 2021–2022. Accounts of the conflict contain competing allegations from the parties involved, so those claims should not be treated as settled facts.
In 2024, The Guardian reported that ZA/UM had cancelled both its sequel and an expansion after years of disruption and key staff departures. PC Gamer identified the full sequel as project Y12. That cancellation is the concrete reason the promised continuation is not arriving as announced; it is more precise than saying a sequel is metaphysically impossible.

Is there a Disco Elysium sequel in development now?
No canonical sequel is currently supported by the cited record. The cancelled ZA/UM project is not an announced release, and no replacement project has been confirmed as a continuation of the original game’s characters or setting.

Former contributors have formed Longdue, which announced a separate spiritual successor. Narrative director Grant Roberts described it as “another narrative-first, psychological RPG” focused on the interplay between inner worlds and external landscapes. Longdue’s description says player choices will shape both the world and its characters.
Best Value
That is a meaningful creative link, but it is not a sequel announcement. The project had no confirmed final title or release date in the cited reporting, and its story, setting and characters have not been presented as canon to Disco Elysium.
Zero Parades: For Dead Spies is a different game
ZA/UM’s Zero Parades: For Dead Spies is a separate RPG. In its 2026 coverage, PC Gamer states that it has different characters, takes place in another world and is not a sequel to Disco Elysium. Similar interest in narrative role-playing does not make it a continuation of the detective’s story.
| Project | Connection to Disco Elysium | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Project Y12 | Planned direct sequel | Cancelled by ZA/UM; no released sequel |
| Longdue project | Spiritual successor by former contributors | Announced; title and release date not confirmed in the cited reports |
| Zero Parades: For Dead Spies | Unrelated ZA/UM RPG | Different characters and world; explicitly not a sequel |
Why the cancellation matters beyond one unfinished game
Disco Elysium is difficult to follow because its achievement is systemic. A successor would need more than literary dialogue: it would have to make skills alter perception, let beliefs modify play, support meaningful failure and sustain an enormous web of conditional writing. That combination is why later projects can inherit the philosophy without reproducing the exact experience.
For now, the most accurate outlook is therefore bittersweet. The original remains a 2019 landmark with a million-word script and an unusually reactive role-playing structure. Its announced sequel was cancelled, Longdue is pursuing a separate spiritual successor, and Zero Parades is another game entirely. Readers hoping for the same detective and the same world should not treat either announced project as Disco Elysium 2.
