To enable the feature, open Settings > Accounts > Windows backup, then switch on Remember my apps. Use a personal Microsoft account: Microsoft says work and school accounts cannot use this toggle. Windows remembers your installed-app list and can help you restore Microsoft Store apps on a new or reinstalled PC; it does not promise to back up app data or automatically reinstall every desktop program.
What Remember my apps does
Remember my apps is part of Windows 11 Backup. Its job is to retain a list of the apps installed on your Windows device so that the list can be used when you set up another PC or reinstall Windows. The Windows Backup Settings Catalog identifies the setting as the list of installed apps.

Microsoft describes the feature this way: “Remember my apps: Windows will remember the apps you have installed and help you restore them from Microsoft Store on your new devices.” That wording is important. The feature remembers app choices and assists with restoration; it is not a complete image backup.

- It can offer Microsoft Store apps for restoration during setup.
- For an app that is not available in Microsoft Store, Windows can direct you to the web to download its installer.
- It does not state that application documents, profiles, licenses, settings, or other app data are backed up.
- It does not guarantee unattended installation of every traditional desktop program.
Think of the feature as an app-list recovery aid. Keep separate backups for documents and any application data that matters to you.

Check eligibility before looking for the switch
The account you use determines whether the control is available. Microsoft’s consumer Windows Backup guidance focuses on personal Microsoft accounts. Work and school accounts cannot use Remember my apps, so an organization-managed sign-in can make the option unavailable even when Windows 11 itself is functioning normally.
| Sign-in type | Remember my apps | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Microsoft account | Supported for the consumer Windows Backup experience | Use that account in Windows Backup and enable the switch. |
| Work or school account | Not supported for this toggle | Ask your administrator about the organization’s backup policy; changing Windows settings cannot make this consumer feature available. |
| Local account with no personal Microsoft account connected | Not established as a supported setup in Microsoft’s guidance | Check whether Windows Backup offers a personal Microsoft-account sign-in before troubleshooting the switch itself. |
Microsoft’s support pages do not state a particular Windows 11 build number or update threshold for this setting. Labels can therefore vary slightly between releases, while the current path remains the place to look.
Enable Remember my apps in Windows 11
- Open Settings. Select Start, then choose Settings, or press Windows+I.
- Open the account backup page. In the left column, select Accounts, then select Windows backup.
- Find the app setting. Locate Remember my apps in the Windows Backup options.
- Turn it on. Move the Remember my apps switch to On. If Windows asks you to sign in, use the personal Microsoft account whose backup you want to use later.
- Leave the page after the state changes. Return to Windows Backup and confirm the control still shows On. This verifies the setting was accepted rather than merely clicked.
Microsoft also says Windows Backup configuration can be managed from the Windows Backup app. If that app is the route shown on your installation, use its backup controls and look for the same Remember my apps label.

Windows does not provide a separate app-by-app export that you need to create manually for this feature. The practical check is the setting state itself:
- Open Settings > Accounts > Windows backup.
- Verify that Remember my apps is visibly set to On.
- Make sure you are signed in with the personal Microsoft account you intend to use on the replacement or reinstalled PC.
Do not interpret an enabled switch as proof that every program will be copied, that program data is protected, or that installers for non-Store software have been stored. The setting records the installed-app list for the restoration workflow described by Microsoft.

What happens when you restore on another PC
Restoration occurs during Windows setup on a new device or after Windows has been reinstalled. The account match matters: sign in with the same Microsoft account that was used for the backup, then choose the offered backup when Windows presents it.
- Start the Windows 11 setup process on the new or reinstalled PC.
- Sign in with the same personal Microsoft account associated with the remembered app list.
- When Windows offers an available backup, select that backup.
- Review the app pins or app choices shown by setup.
- Select the pins for the Microsoft Store apps you want restored and continue setup.
- For an app that is not available in Microsoft Store, follow Windows’ web prompt to download the installer, then install it according to that publisher’s instructions.
The workflow is therefore partly automatic and partly confirmatory. Store apps can be selected from the offered pins; software outside Microsoft Store requires a separate download step. Keep installers, license information, and any application-specific backup procedures available for programs you rely on.
Microsoft Store apps versus apps installed elsewhere
The source of an app changes what Windows can do during restoration.
| App source | What Windows offers | Your follow-through |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Store | Windows can show the remembered app as a pin during setup. | Select the pin for each app you want restored and let setup continue. |
| Not available in Microsoft Store | Windows directs you to the web to download an installer. | Open the provided web route, obtain the installer, and complete installation separately. |
| Application data or settings | Not promised by the Remember my apps description. | Restore data from the app’s own backup method or another backup you maintain. |
An app can appear in your remembered list without being ready to use immediately. You may still need to sign in, activate a license, install updates, reconnect plug-ins, or restore a profile. Those actions are outside what Microsoft promises for this Windows Backup setting.
If Remember my apps is missing or unavailable
Check whether the account is personal
First verify the account category rather than repeatedly searching Settings. Microsoft says work and school accounts cannot use Remember my apps. If Windows is connected only to an organization account, the consumer toggle can be unavailable by design.

Open the exact Windows Backup page
Use Settings > Accounts > Windows backup, not a general search for the word “apps.” Windows 11 releases can present related controls in slightly different layouts, and Microsoft also identifies the Windows Backup app as a place to manage configuration.

Check the sign-in used for backup
A personal Microsoft account must be the account associated with the backup workflow you plan to restore. If setup later uses a different account, the expected backup may not be offered. Sign out only if you understand which account owns the backup and have another way to recover your files and data.
Do not treat a missing switch as a build guarantee
Microsoft’s cited guidance does not specify a Windows 11 build number or update cutoff for this setting. Avoid assuming that a particular build is universally required. Install normal Windows updates available to your device, then check the current labels again; interface wording can differ across releases.
Distinguish policy restrictions from a broken setting
On an organization-managed computer, policy may control Windows Backup. The documented account limitation is enough to explain why a work or school sign-in cannot use the toggle. If the device belongs to an employer or school, contact its administrator instead of trying to bypass management controls.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Looking under OneDrive or File Explorer. The control is under Settings > Accounts > Windows backup.
- Expecting a full system image. Remember my apps concerns the installed-app list and restoration assistance, not a complete disk clone.
- Assuming app data follows the app. Documents, databases, saved games, browser profiles, and program preferences are not promised by the feature description.
- Using a work account and concluding Windows is malfunctioning. Microsoft excludes work and school accounts from this consumer toggle.
- Expecting every desktop installer to run automatically. Non-Store software may require a web download and a normal manual installation.
- Signing in with a different account during setup. The restoration offer depends on using the same Microsoft account associated with the backup.
- Assuming the list proves an app is still available. Store availability can differ by app and time; Windows may instead provide a web route for an installer.
What to prepare before reinstalling Windows
Enabling the switch is only one part of a reliable move to a new or reset PC. Before starting setup, make a short migration checklist:

- Record the personal Microsoft account you used for Windows Backup and make sure you can sign in to it.
- Back up personal files separately; Remember my apps is not described as a file-backup service.
- Use each important application’s own export or backup feature for profiles, libraries, templates, databases, and settings.
- Keep license keys, subscription details, or organization sign-in instructions for software that needs activation after installation.
- Save installers or know where to obtain them for programs that are not available in Microsoft Store.
- After setup, open each restored app and verify its data, account, plug-ins, and preferences before wiping the old device.
This preparation prevents a common misunderstanding: an app list can tell you what to reinstall, but it cannot recreate information that lived inside the old installation unless that information was backed up separately.
Privacy and account considerations
The setting ties the remembered app list to the Microsoft account used by Windows Backup. Choose an account you control and protect it with the account-security measures recommended by Microsoft. On a shared PC, check which account is signed in before enabling backup so another person’s app list is not associated with your migration plan.
On a work or school device, the account restriction is also a boundary between consumer backup and organizational management. Do not move company software or data to a personal backup workflow without your organization’s permission.
Version and availability notes
The official support material used for this procedure applies to Windows 11 but does not publish a specific build requirement or a universal promise that every release has identical wording. Use the labels currently displayed on your device. If Microsoft changes the Settings layout, search within Accounts for Windows backup and look for the Remember my apps control or the corresponding option in the Windows Backup app.
No paid hardware or subscription product is needed to enable this built-in setting. The feature is part of Windows’ backup experience; external drives and other accessories do not switch it on.
Quick decision guide
| Your situation | Best next step |
|---|---|
| You have a personal Microsoft account and can see the switch | Turn on Remember my apps at Settings > Accounts > Windows backup, then verify it remains on. |
| You have a work or school account | The consumer toggle is not supported; follow your organization’s backup process. |
| You are moving to a new or reinstalled PC | Use the same personal Microsoft account during setup and choose the offered backup. |
| Your software came from Microsoft Store | Select its offered pin during setup. |
| Your software came from elsewhere | Use the web installer route Windows provides and complete installation manually. |
| You need files or app settings restored | Use separate file and application-data backups; the app-list feature does not promise those items. |
Bottom line
Enable Remember my apps at Settings > Accounts > Windows backup with a personal Microsoft account. On a new or reinstalled Windows 11 PC, sign in with that same account and select the offered backup. Store apps can be chosen from setup pins, while apps outside Microsoft Store require a web download and separate installation. Treat the feature as an app-list reminder and restoration aid—not as a replacement for backing up files, application data, or installers.
