1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo watch TV in your preferred language in Canada, set up your streaming device, install an app available for that device and region, then check the language options for the specific movie or episode. Choosing English, French, or another language for the device interface changes menus—not the audio or subtitles a service offers.
What you need before setup
Both a Fire TV Stick and an Android TV or Google TV box connect to the television through HDMI. You’ll also need reliable power, a Wi-Fi connection, and the relevant platform account. Apps, subscriptions, and program-language options are separate from the device itself: owning a streaming stick or box does not automatically provide channels or unlock paid services.

- Fire TV Stick: an HDMI television, Wi-Fi credentials, an Amazon account, and the stick, remote, batteries, and power cable supplied for your model. Amazon’s instructions are specific to the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Generation); included accessories and connection details can vary by generation. Check the model-specific setup instructions.
- Android TV or Google TV box: an available HDMI input, the device’s power supply, Wi-Fi credentials, and any account requested by the on-screen setup. Menus and account steps vary by manufacturer and model.
- Your viewing plan: identify the app or television provider you want to use, confirm it is available on your device in Canada, and check whether it requires a subscription or add-on.
How to set up a Fire TV Stick
- Connect the stick to an HDMI port on the TV. If a nearby cable blocks the port or the television is flush-mounted and access is difficult, an HDMI extender may help; it is an optional clearance solution, not a standard requirement.
- Connect the supplied power cable and power the device. If the TV’s USB port cannot provide adequate power, or the cable cannot reach, follow the model’s instructions about using a wall adapter. Check the supplied kit and exact model guidance before buying an adapter or other accessory.
- Turn on the television and select the HDMI input used by the stick.
- Follow the on-screen steps to connect to Wi-Fi and sign in to an Amazon account or register one through the displayed account flow.
- Find and install the streaming apps you want, if they are available for that device and region. Check the app’s Canadian service terms and subscription requirements separately.
Amazon lists accessibility options such as closed captions, a screen reader, a screen magnifier, and audio descriptions in its setup guidance. These are device accessibility features; they do not mean every title has a particular subtitle or audio track. See Amazon’s Fire TV Stick setup and accessibility details.
How to set up an Android TV or Google TV box
- Connect the box to an available HDMI input and to its power source.
- Turn on the TV and select that HDMI input.
- Complete the device’s on-screen network and account setup. The steps and labels differ across manufacturers, so follow the prompts for your model.
- Open the platform’s app store or Apps area and install the services you plan to use, if they are offered for your device and region. Google says apps can be found from the Google TV Apps area, but the interface and availability depend on device and region. Google’s Canada home-screen help explains the platform context.
Change the interface language without confusing it with program language
On Google TV, the home screen depends on location and the language selected for the device. Google’s Canada help lists English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish among the language choices associated with its For you, Movies, Shows, Apps, and Library tabs. This affects the platform presentation; it does not establish that a film or show is dubbed or subtitled in the same language. See Google’s Canada-specific home-screen information.

Fire TV and Android box menu labels vary by model and software version. Use the device’s settings to choose an interface language if that option is offered, but treat it as a preference for menus and system presentation—not as a universal language setting for every app and title.
Choose audio or subtitles for a movie or episode
Language choices belong to the service and the individual title. A program may offer several audio tracks, subtitles, both, or neither in the language you want. On Google TV, you can inspect available audio and subtitle languages for a title, then use the playback captions or audio controls to select a listed option. Some titles have permanent subtitles that cannot be switched off. For videos watched through a paid subscription, Google directs viewers to the service provider for language details. Google explains how to check a video’s language settings.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
- Open the movie or episode’s details in the service and look for its audio, captions, or subtitle information.
- Start playback and open the app’s audio or subtitle controls. Select a language that is actually listed.
- If the option is missing, check the provider’s title or account help, or ask its support team. A device-wide language change cannot add a track that the service does not provide.
Check language availability before choosing a service
For a target language, check each link in the chain rather than relying on the device’s language menu:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- App: Is it officially available for your device and in Canada?
- Service: Does the provider offer the desired language in its Canadian catalogue?
- Title: Does the specific film or episode include that audio track or subtitle option?
- Playback: Can you select the track in the app’s controls?
- Cost: Does access require a paid subscription or add-on?
Availability can differ between providers, titles, and regions, so a device or service’s general language support is not a guarantee for a particular program. Amazon’s Canadian Fire TV Stick listing also notes that subscription fees may apply; buying the hardware does not itself unlock the listed services. Check Amazon Canada’s Fire TV Stick HD listing for its device positioning and current product details.

Choose between a Fire TV Stick and an Android TV box
There is no universal winner for multilingual viewing. Choose based on your television, preferred interface, and the apps and titles you actually plan to watch—not on a promise that one device supplies more languages.
- Check Canadian app support first. Confirm that each required service supports the exact device or platform and is available in Canada.
- Compare interface needs. If menus in a particular language matter, confirm the language options on the specific device. Google TV’s Canada interface choices do not predict a title’s audio or subtitle tracks.
- Match hardware to the television. Check resolution support, HDMI access, power arrangements, and any other ports you need against the television and the specific model.
- Compare the full recurring cost. The device is only one part of the setup; account for subscriptions or add-ons required by the services you intend to use.
- Verify language title by title. A platform-level comparison cannot substitute for checking the Canadian catalogue and playback options for the programs you want.
Understand TV and online services in Canada
In Canada, television can reach viewers through different routes. The CRTC describes IPTV as television delivered to a home through a provider’s set-top box and required access, while its online-content information describes internet-delivered broadcasting services as exempt from the licensing obligation under the framework discussed there. Those descriptions do not establish that every seller, app, playlist, or content source is lawful or authorized. Check the actual provider and current Canadian rules before relying on a specific service. CRTC: Options to Watch TV and CRTC: TV shows, movies, music and other content online.
