Change the time that Narrator keeps a notification or flash message on a braille display from Narrator settings > Braille > Use a braille display with Narrator > Notification timeout. Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + N to open Narrator settings, select the timeout value shown by your Windows 11 build, and close Settings.

If you need a message gone immediately, pan across the message’s full length on the braille display instead of waiting for the timeout.

What the Notification timeout setting controls

Narrator’s braille settings include a Notification timeout control. It determines how long a notification or flash message remains available through Narrator’s braille output before it is removed automatically. This is a display-time preference for braille notifications; it does not change how long a Windows notification remains visible on the screen and does not alter Narrator’s speech timing.

Microsoft does not publish one universal default, minimum, maximum, or numeric unit for this control. The choices can therefore depend on the Windows 11 build and configuration in front of you. Use the values actually offered in your own Notification timeout control rather than relying on a number from another computer.

The complete location is:

Microsoft Support describes the purpose this way: “And if you’d like to change the amount of time a notification or flash message is displayed, you can do that in Settings.”

What you need before changing it

The control is available as part of Narrator’s braille configuration. Have these items ready:

  • A Windows 11 computer with Narrator settings available.
  • A refreshable braille display if you want to test the result immediately. Microsoft documents USB and serial port connection types for the display.
  • Braille support installed in Windows. If it is not installed, the Braille section provides a download-and-install option.
  • Permission to restart Windows if setup requests a restart.

You can change the setting before connecting a display, but testing the timeout requires a functioning braille output connection. If your display uses a different connection method, the documented Narrator choices are USB and serial port; check which of those applies to your hardware.

Change the braille notification timeout

Follow these steps in order. The shortcut opens Narrator’s settings directly, so you do not need to hunt through several Settings categories.

  1. Open Narrator settings. Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + N. This is Microsoft’s documented keyboard shortcut for Narrator settings.
  2. Open the Braille area. In Narrator settings, find the section labeled Braille.
  3. Open braille display configuration. Select Use a braille display with Narrator. This opens the controls for braille output, including notification behavior.
  4. Install support if prompted. If Windows shows Download and install Braille, select it and wait for installation to finish. If Windows asks you to restart, restart before continuing.
  5. Return to Narrator’s braille settings. After installation and any required restart, open Narrator settings again with Windows logo key + Ctrl + N. Turn on Turn on braille, then choose Add a braille display if a display has not yet been configured.
  6. Choose the connection type when adding hardware. Select the option that matches your display: USB or serial port. Complete the prompts so Narrator can use the display.
  7. Set the timeout. In the braille settings, locate Notification timeout and choose the duration you want from the values shown. Windows does not expose one documented numeric range for every build, so select the value that fits your reading speed from the list currently provided.
  8. Close Settings. The selection takes effect for Narrator’s braille notifications and flash messages. Trigger a notification or flash message to confirm that the display now keeps it for the interval you selected.

If Braille support is not installed

A missing timeout control often means the braille component has not been installed yet, rather than that the feature is unavailable. Use this installation path:

  1. Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + N.
  2. Open Braille, then select Use a braille display with Narrator.
  3. Select Download and install Braille.
  4. Wait until Windows completes the installation. Do not close the process partway through.
  5. Restart Windows if prompted.
  6. Open Narrator settings again, turn on Turn on braille, and select Add a braille display.
  7. Choose USB or serial port, depending on how your display connects.
  8. Return to Notification timeout and select the desired value.

Installation and display pairing are separate from choosing the timeout. A display can be configured first, or you can review the available braille controls before connecting hardware; the timeout itself is chosen from Narrator’s braille settings.

USB and serial connections: which path applies?

Narrator documents two connection types for adding a braille display. The right choice is determined by the physical connection and the interface your display presents to Windows.

Connection When to choose it What to do
USB Your refreshable braille display connects to the PC through a USB cable. In Add a braille display, choose the USB connection option and follow the on-screen configuration.
Serial port Your display uses a serial connection recognized by Windows. In Add a braille display, choose the serial port option and complete the prompts.

The timeout menu is part of Narrator’s braille settings, not a separate setting for USB and another for serial. Once the display is configured, use the same Notification timeout control.

How to choose a practical duration

Windows presents the available timeout choices in the control itself. Because Microsoft does not state a universal default or numeric minimum and maximum, the most reliable approach is to choose based on how quickly you read braille notifications:

  • Choose a longer value if you regularly need time to read a complete message before it disappears and do not want to interrupt your current task to replay it.
  • Choose a shorter value if transient messages frequently remain on the display after you have finished reading them and you prefer the display to return to other content sooner.
  • Use the current build’s labels and values. Do not assume that a duration listed in instructions for another Windows 11 release will appear identically on your system.
  • Test with a real notification. A setting can be saved correctly even when no message is currently present, so verify it by observing a Narrator braille notification or flash message.

The setting affects the automatic display period. It does not prevent a message from being dismissed manually before that period ends.

Dismiss a notification immediately by panning

When waiting for the selected timeout is inconvenient, Microsoft provides a faster method: pan the length of the message on the braille display. Panning across the complete message dismisses the notification or flash message immediately.

Tactile Braille Caliper - Caliper - Braille Measuring Tools
  • Simple-to-use, accurate caliper for blind and visually impaired users
  • Displays measurements directly in braille

  2. Pan through the full length of the message using the display’s panning controls.
  3. After the complete message has been panned, Narrator dismisses it without waiting for the automatic timeout.

This manual method is useful when you have selected a longer automatic duration for accessibility but occasionally want to clear one message quickly. It also provides an immediate alternative when you do not want to change the global timeout setting.

Troubleshooting the setting

The Windows logo key + Ctrl + N shortcut does nothing

Make sure you press all three keys together: the Windows logo key, Ctrl, and N. The shortcut is specifically for Narrator settings. If the settings window opens but not at the expected area, locate Braille and continue from there.

The Braille section does not show the timeout

Open Use a braille display with Narrator inside the Braille section. If Windows offers Download and install Braille, install the component and restart when prompted. Then reopen Narrator settings and check the braille controls again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows asks for a restart

Allow the restart to finish before trying to configure the display or timeout. After Windows starts again, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + N, return to Braille, and continue with Turn on braille and Add a braille display.

  • Made in the USA and ready to mount: Manufactured by Alpha Dog ADA Signs in California; high-adhesive foam mounting tape is included.

The display is not available when adding it

Confirm that you selected the connection type matching the hardware. Narrator’s documented choices are USB and serial port. A mismatch between the physical connection and the selected option can prevent the display from being added, even when braille support is installed.

The timeout seems unchanged

Reopen Notification timeout and check which value is selected, then close Settings again. Test with a new notification or flash message rather than one that appeared before the change. If the message is still present, pan through its full length to dismiss it manually and then observe the next message.

You cannot find a number that another guide mentions

Microsoft does not publish a fixed default, minimum, maximum, or universal numeric unit for this setting. Windows may expose different choices across builds. Use the values shown in your own menu; the absence of a particular number is not evidence that the feature is malfunctioning.

Timeout versus manual dismissal

These are two different workflows, and you can use both:

Goal Best action Result
Keep every notification visible for a predictable period Set Notification timeout to the duration that gives you enough reading time. Each notification or flash message remains on braille output until that interval expires.
Clear one message immediately Pan the full length of the message. The current notification or flash message is dismissed without waiting for the timeout.
Use a display that has not yet been configured Install braille support, turn on braille, and use Add a braille display. Narrator can use the connected display, after which the timeout control can be tested.

Changing the timeout is appropriate when your preferred reading time is consistent. Panning is appropriate when only an individual message needs to disappear quickly.

A verification checklist

Use this checklist after setup:

  • Settings opened: Windows logo key + Ctrl + N opened Narrator settings.
  • Braille path followed: You opened Braille and Use a braille display with Narrator.
  • Support installed: You used Download and install Braille if it was offered and restarted when requested.
  • Braille enabled: Turn on braille is enabled.
  • Display added: The display was added using the correct USB or serial port option.
  • Timeout selected: A value is selected under Notification timeout.
  • Result tested: A new notification or flash message stayed visible for the selected period.
  • Manual control confirmed: Panning across the message length dismissed it immediately when needed.

Key points to remember

The setting is not in a general notification panel. It belongs to Narrator’s Braille configuration, under Use a braille display with Narrator. Braille support may need to be downloaded before the controls appear, and Microsoft documents USB and serial port connections when adding a display. Since Microsoft does not specify a universal numeric timeout range, the choices shown on your Windows 11 build are the authoritative ones for your computer. For one-off messages, panning the message’s full length provides immediate dismissal.
