A local Codex session monitor can help you investigate what happened in a particular session, but it cannot be treated as an authoritative quota meter. To check the allowance, credits, or reset time your account currently shows, use Settings or the usage dashboard—or enter /status in an active Codex CLI session.
Where to check your Codex allowance and reset time
OpenAI’s Help Center says to check Settings or the usage dashboard for the allowance that is exhausted, your credit balance, and any reset time displayed. In an active Codex CLI session, enter /status. The details available can vary by account or workspace; use the information shown for your own account rather than assuming a particular plan limit. See OpenAI’s Codex plan usage guidance.

Some credit-based Enterprise users may also have a view of recent high-usage Work and Codex chats and lifetime credit usage. That is an Enterprise-specific surface where available, not a general usage page for every plan. Enterprise token-based billing is a separate billing arrangement.
Account view versus local session activity
Think of an htop-style local monitor as a session activity investigator, not a quota gauge. The official Codex repository describes Codex CLI as a coding agent that runs locally, but the sources do not establish a supported local accounting format that reconstructs server-side quota. A local log or activity display may help you inspect one client session; it does not establish your remaining account allowance or reset window.

| Question | Account-level view | Local session view |
|---|---|---|
| How authoritative is it for remaining quota? | Use Settings, the usage dashboard, or CLI /status for the allowance, credit balance, and reset information currently displayed by your account. Availability and details vary by plan or workspace. (OpenAI Help Center) |
Not established as a complete or authoritative measure of server-side quota. (OpenAI Codex repository) |
| How granular is it? | Account or workspace usage surfaces; the available details depend on the account. | Can be useful for examining activity in a particular local client session, but completeness is not established. |
| Does it show live remaining quota or reset timing? | Shows the account information currently displayed, including a reset time when one is shown. | No official continuous local quota meter or equivalence to the account view is established. |
| Who can use it? | Settings, dashboard, or /status as available for the user’s plan and client; some additional usage details are Enterprise-specific. |
Local activity inspection depends on the client and records available. The reviewed sources do not establish an official quota-monitoring feature. |
If you inspect local records, label any totals or timing as local observations. Do not convert them into a claim about account quota remaining, server-side model cost, or a universal burn rate.
Why two Codex tasks can use different amounts
OpenAI’s Help Center says: “Usage depends on the model, where the task runs, task complexity, context, reasoning, speed, and tools.” In practical terms, a long-running task can use substantially more than a short request, and two sessions with the same number of prompts need not consume the same allowance. Prompt counts, session counts, and elapsed hours are therefore not reliable quota estimators.

Some Codex and ChatGPT Work features share an allowance or credit pool on plans where those features are available. Because the pool and usage surfaces depend on plan and workspace, do not assume that Codex activity is always accounted for in isolation.

What to do if usage looks wrong
- Check the account surface. Open Settings or the usage dashboard and note which allowance is exhausted, your displayed credit balance, and any reset time. In an active Codex CLI session, enter
/status. - Record the specific discrepancy. Note the client and model, when the event happened including your time zone, and the allowance or credit balance and reset time shown. A local session monitor can help you reconstruct the client-side activity, but keep it separate from the account figures.
- Contact OpenAI Support if the account view still appears wrong. OpenAI asks users to provide the questioned allowance or credit balance, displayed reset time, a screenshot, the Codex client and model, and the event time with time zone. Remove sensitive information from screenshots. The Help Center says Support does not reset usage limits. Details are in OpenAI’s usage guidance.
Past reports are context, not a diagnosis
OpenAI Status documented an incident titled “Codex Usage Limits Depleting Faster Than Expected,” resolved June 29, 2026. The update said some reports were connected to abuse and fraud prevention systems incorrectly rate limiting certain accounts, described the impact as limited, and stated: “All impacted services have now fully recovered.” This is evidence of a dated incident, not proof that a present-day discrepancy has the same cause. A separate Codex repository issue opened April 23, 2026 describes one Plus subscriber’s report of quota drops while opening sessions and running /status. The report listed Codex CLI v0.123.0, macOS Intel, and GPT-5.3-Codex; it was closed as a duplicate. The author’s suggested causes—including initialization, background polling, retries, or /status behavior—were hypotheses, not confirmed diagnoses. Its numerical observations are one user’s account, not a representative measurement or general product behavior. View the issue.
What a local quota autopsy can establish
A session-level view can be useful when you need to reconstruct what a particular local client was doing around a usage change. It cannot, on the evidence available, reliably answer how much official account allowance remains, when the server-side allowance will reset, or whether a local event caused a particular account-level deduction. Use local activity as diagnostic context and the account view as the source for the allowance and reset information OpenAI displays.
