SerpApi and DataForSEO are primarily SERP-retrieval services; Brave Search API is access to an independent web index. That distinction matters more than the headline price. Choose a SERP API when you need search-engine-specific pages, rankings, local packs, ads, shopping results, or device and location simulation. Choose an independent-index API when your application needs web documents and snippets without depending on one search engine’s result page.

What “web search API” means in this comparison
Web search APIs are not interchangeable products. They generally fall into two groups.

SERP extraction and structuring
SerpApi and DataForSEO retrieve results from named search engines and return parsed or raw search-engine result pages (SERPs). A request can specify variables such as engine, keyword, country or city, language, device, and sometimes result depth. The response can expose the same features a user sees on a results page: organic listings, local results, advertisements, knowledge panels, direct answers, images, news, shopping, or video.

This model is useful for rank tracking, SEO reporting, competitor monitoring, local-search checks, and applications that must reproduce a particular engine’s result layout. It also means your implementation is coupled to the engines and SERP features the provider actually supports.
Independent-index search
Brave Search API searches Brave’s own web index rather than returning a copy of a Google SERP. Its web endpoint returns results and snippets, while separate modes cover news, images, video, and AI context. Brave says its index contains more than 40 billion pages and receives more than 100 million page updates per day; those figures are vendor claims, not an independent audit.
An independent index can be the better fit for a search box, retrieval-augmented application, or assistant that needs web context. It is not a substitute for a Google-specific rank check because the underlying corpus and ranking system are different.

These figures are not normalized. SerpApi sells monthly credit tiers, Brave describes prepaid endpoint credits, and DataForSEO’s example varies by method, priority, depth, and parameters.
SerpApi: structured, engine-specific SERPs
What it returns
SerpApi’s documented interface is designed around search-engine result pages. You can request Google results with geographic and device parameters and receive structured JSON, HTML, or Markdown. Its documented result categories include organic links, local packs, ads, knowledge graphs, direct answers, images, news, shopping, and videos. That breadth is important when a product requirement says “show the local pack” or “record shopping positions,” rather than merely “find pages about this keyword.”
The provider also documents other engines and result categories. Confirm the exact engine, endpoint, and feature combination you need: support for a generic web search does not automatically imply support for every local, news, shopping, or device-specific layout.
How its metering works
SerpApi’s pricing documentation says a successful search consumes one credit regardless of how many results are returned. A response with 100 results and an empty result set each count as one search. Cached, errored, and failed requests are described as not counting. Build your budget from successful requests and your retry policy, not from the number of result rows you display.

The listed tiers are monthly allowances: 250 searches at no charge, then 1,000 for $25, 5,000 for $75, 15,000 for $150, and 30,000 for $275. The pricing page lists larger tiers, but their values are not included in the figures above. Verify the current plan table, throughput, and support terms before purchase.
When it is the practical choice
- Localized rank checks where country, city, or device changes the result page.
- Monitoring that depends on SERP features such as ads, local results, shopping, or knowledge panels.
- Teams that prefer a documented response schema over maintaining their own browser automation and parsers.
- Projects whose volume fits a monthly credit tier and whose workflow benefits from a managed search-engine interface.
Questions to settle before deployment
- Which engine and SERP features are required, and are they available on the endpoint you will call?
- What throughput and support level applies to the selected plan?
- Can you cache responses under your intended use, and for how long?
- Does your collection and downstream use fit the applicable contractual and legal conditions?
SerpApi describes a U.S. Legal Shield for lawful collection of public search data, included with Production and higher plans up to $2 million. That is not blanket approval for every use or jurisdiction; obtain legal advice for a material compliance decision.
DataForSEO: queue-based or live SERP jobs
Two retrieval patterns
DataForSEO’s Standard method places a SERP task in a queue and lets you retrieve the result later. This asynchronous pattern suits scheduled rank tracking, large keyword lists, and batch reporting, where a few seconds or minutes of queue time is acceptable.
The Live method aims to return a real-time result through a single POST. It is more suitable for an interactive dashboard, an on-demand diagnostic, or a workflow that cannot maintain task IDs and later polling. Priority Queue provides another queue option when delivery speed matters.

The SERP API accepts search-engine, keyword, language, location, and device targeting. Depending on the request, you can ask for parsed structures or raw SERP material. Confirm the exact result depth and optional fields your parser needs; the base example is not a guarantee that every available feature is included at the same price.

When it is the practical choice
- Bulk SEO jobs where queued delivery is acceptable.
- Multi-engine rank tracking with explicit language, location, and device controls.
- Systems that need to reserve Live retrieval for a smaller interactive subset and process the rest asynchronously.
Design for queue polling, task timeouts, duplicate prevention, and retry handling. A low per-SERP rate does not eliminate the engineering cost of tracking task states and reconciling partial batches.

Brave Search API: an independent web index
What makes it different
Brave’s Search API returns web results from Brave’s own index, with text snippets and additional endpoints for news, images, videos, and AI context. This is a different data product from a Google SERP parser: rankings, coverage, snippets, and feature availability come from Brave’s crawler, index, and ranking systems.

Pricing and capacity
The current pricing page lists Search at $5 per 1,000 requests, prepaid, with $5 in monthly credits and a listed capacity of 50 requests per second. At the listed rate, 10,000 Search requests represent $50 before applying any account credit. The Answers product is priced separately and includes token charges; do not assume that a Search request includes generated-answer output.
Enterprise arrangements are bespoke. Confirm which endpoint is being billed, how credits are applied, what happens when prepaid credit is exhausted, and whether your expected burst rate is permitted for the plan.
When it is the practical choice
- A consumer or internal search box that can use an index independent of the major search engines.
- Retrieval-augmented applications that need snippets or context documents for a model.
- Products where news, image, or video search is needed through separate specialized modes.
A customer testimonial on Brave’s API page describes accurate results for academic citation services and praises speed, precision, and data structuring. It is a customer statement, not a comparative benchmark.
Storage and downstream rights
Brave says a plan expressly granting storage rights is required to store API results, and that the API does not grant rights to third-party webpage content. If you intend to retain snippets, build a cache, train a model, expose results to another customer, or archive evidence, have the applicable terms reviewed first. Storage, display, model use, and downstream access are separate contract questions.
Cost: compare the workload, not the headline number
“Cheapest per request” can be misleading because the request units differ. A SerpApi credit is a successful search even if the response has many results. Brave charges by endpoint request and separates Search from Answers. DataForSEO’s example depends on queue mode, priority, result depth, and optional parameters.

Build a monthly cost model
- Count the actual searches, not page rows. Include scheduled checks, user-triggered searches, refreshes, and retries.
- Separate interactive calls from batch work. Interactive calls may require Live retrieval or a higher-throughput plan; batch work may fit a queue.
- Record result depth and optional fields. Ten results, 100 results, local features, shopping data, and extra parameters may not have the same cost.
- Map geography and device combinations. Ten keywords checked on desktop and mobile in five cities are 100 requests, not 10.
- Apply the provider’s billing unit and credit rules, then add a reserve for failed jobs, rechecks, and seasonal spikes.
- Price storage, answer generation, or other separate products independently.

Localized Google rank monitoring
Start with a SERP-oriented provider. SerpApi is suited to structured Google pages with geographic and device parameters. DataForSEO is suited when the same monitoring system must cover multiple engines or process a large queue of keywords. Compare the exact local-pack, map, organic, and device fields your report requires.

High-volume scheduled SEO jobs
DataForSEO’s Standard Queue is a natural candidate when delayed retrieval is acceptable. Keep Live for urgent or interactive checks. SerpApi can be simpler operationally if a monthly credit plan and its response schema match your needs, but model the tier boundary and throughput before selecting it.
Interactive search or web retrieval
Brave is a candidate when you want results from an independent index and snippets for an application. Test the queries that matter to your users, including regional and niche terms. Do not infer Google ranking equivalence from a successful API response.
AI grounding
First decide whether you need evidence/context or a generated answer. Brave documents Search and Answers as separate products, with Answers carrying token charges. A SERP API may provide engine-specific evidence, but your application remains responsible for selecting, citing, filtering, and storing that material under the applicable terms.
Run a representative bake-off before signing up
No provider page establishes a neutral winner for relevance, freshness, uptime, or latency. A small, controlled trial is more informative than a generic feature checklist.

- Create a query corpus. Include brand, non-brand, local, long-tail, multilingual, news-sensitive, and zero-result queries. Keep the corpus fixed across providers.
- Pin geography and device. Use the same country, city, language, desktop/mobile setting, and safe-search assumptions. Record timestamps because SERPs change.
- Define the required fields. List every field your product consumes: rank, URL, title, snippet, result type, ad marker, local address, image, news date, or citation context.
- Measure response behavior. Record time to first usable result, full completion time, queue wait, timeout rate, HTTP errors, and retry outcomes. Separate provider latency from your own polling interval.
- Test throughput safely. Ramp concurrency gradually and observe documented limits, 429 responses, backoff requirements, and burst behavior. Do not assume a listed capacity is a guaranteed sustained rate for every endpoint.
- Inspect payload stability. Compare JSON fields, null handling, pagination, ordering, localization, and schema changes. Validate against fixtures so a missing field does not silently corrupt rankings.
- Calculate effective cost. Multiply the measured request mix by the provider’s billing unit, including depth, priority, optional parameters, retries, and separate answer or storage charges.
- Review rights and retention. Document whether you may cache, display, share, train on, or retain results, and which party owns rights to third-party webpage content.
Operational pitfalls and fixes
Comparing unlike result units
A web-index response, a ten-result SERP, and a feature-rich 100-result page should not be scored as equivalent requests. Normalize your internal metric around the output your application actually consumes.
Ignoring asynchronous work
Queue APIs require task identifiers, polling, timeout handling, and reconciliation. Use idempotency keys or a deduplication layer so a network retry does not create duplicate jobs.
Assuming every retry is free
SerpApi states that errored and failed requests are not counted, but your own retry logic still affects latency and operational load. DataForSEO and Brave use different billing and failure semantics. Verify each provider’s behavior in the contract and test it with controlled failures.
Overlooking schema and feature gaps
“Supports Google” does not tell you whether the response includes the local pack, shopping modules, ads, or knowledge panels you need. Make those fields acceptance criteria, not optional enhancements.

Brave specifically requires storage rights to be granted by the plan. Similar questions should be asked of every provider: retention period, cache use, customer display, model training, and downstream API access.
Treating vendor claims as benchmarks
Index-size figures, testimonials, and feature lists describe a provider’s offering. They do not prove superior relevance, coverage, or uptime for your queries. Keep your trial results separate from marketing claims.
Legal and data-governance considerations
Search-result collection can involve contractual, copyright, privacy, and jurisdiction-specific issues. The available provider descriptions do not resolve evolving legal disputes, so do not treat a marketing statement as a universal legality determination.
- Identify the jurisdictions in which requests, results, logs, and users reside.
- Minimize storage of snippets and personal data in logs.
- Define deletion and retention schedules before enabling caching.
- Check whether model training, redistribution, or customer-facing display is permitted.
- Review rights to third-party webpage text, images, and metadata separately from rights to the API response format.
- Obtain specialist legal advice when collection or downstream use is business-critical.
What about Google’s Custom Search API?
“Is Google’s Custom Search API being discontinued?” is a common search phrase, but the material available for this comparison does not establish a current retirement date or the availability status of every Programmable Search offering. Treat that as a separate verification task rather than using an unconfirmed status to choose among these providers.
Recommendation
Choose SerpApi when your product depends on structured Google SERPs, localized or device-specific checks, and a managed response format. Choose DataForSEO when multi-engine coverage, queued bulk processing, and fine-grained control over Live versus Standard retrieval matter more than a simple synchronous interface. Choose Brave when you need an independent web index, snippets, or search context for an application or AI workflow.
For a defensible decision, run the same representative corpus through the finalists, compare the fields and latency your application actually needs, model the provider-specific billing rules, and obtain written confirmation of storage and downstream-use rights. Recheck prices, limits, and terms immediately before purchase because the figures above are a snapshot from October 13, 2026.
