In TechChannel’s September 2026 survey of 10 IBM Power professionals, six said they had experienced no significant performance bottleneck in the previous 12 months. The more specific pressure point was peak document and label generation: four respondents noticed slowdowns, most often linking them to data retrieval or communication with off-platform systems. TechChannel says the small sample makes the findings directional, not representative of IBM Power environments generally.
What did the September TechPulse survey find?
TechChannel published its recap on October 1, 2026, based on a September survey of 10 IBM Power professionals. The questions covered performance bottlenecks, retention of performance history, IBM i optimization, and high-volume document and label generation. The report also discloses that it was generated with AI assistance.
TechChannel cautions, “Due to the limited sample size, results are best read as directional.” It does not describe how respondents were recruited, their roles or organizations, or their geography. The counts below describe those respondents; they should not be read as industry-wide rates or benchmarks. Read TechChannel’s recap.
Where did respondents report performance bottlenecks?
Six of the 10 respondents said they had not experienced a significant performance bottleneck in the prior 12 months. Among the bottlenecks named by the others, storage I/O was most common, at two respondents. Network I/O and LPAR or virtualization configuration were each named by one. No one selected CPU/processor capacity or memory constraints as their most significant bottleneck.

These results do not establish that CPU or memory constraints are unimportant elsewhere. They only show that no respondent in this small survey named either as their most significant bottleneck.
How much performance history did respondents retain?
Eight respondents said they kept at least seven months of historical performance data, including six who retained a multi-year baseline. The other two reported shorter retention periods.

Having historical data available does not necessarily mean a team can interpret it or judge whether its environment is well optimized. In this survey, that distinction appeared in respondents’ self-assessments.
Did respondents consider their IBM i environments optimized?
Seven of the 10 rated their IBM i environments adequately optimized; three were uncertain. The uncertain respondents cited insufficient tooling, metrics, or time to make an assessment. No respondent chose the survey’s highly optimized, under-optimized or over-provisioned, or constrained categories.

The split points to a practical difference between collecting performance history and having enough evidence, tools, and time to evaluate what it means. The survey does not independently assess the environments’ actual performance.
Why did peak document and label generation stand out?
Four respondents reported noticeable slowdowns at peak document and label volumes, including temporary CPU spikes or drag on other application workloads. Three saw no noticeable impact. One had scaled hardware or added off-platform servers for document generation, while two did not monitor the workflow’s performance impact. No respondent said a significant bottleneck delayed shipping docks or customer delivery.

Among the nine respondents who answered a separate question about causes of forms and labeling slowdowns, the most commonly cited issues were data retrieval and communication between IBM i and external PC or Windows servers. Two pointed to outdated or inefficient generation software; none blamed printer or hardware limits.

The nine answers describe causes respondents identified; they do not demonstrate that these causes are universal or that one fix will apply across IBM i workflows. The finding is useful chiefly as a reminder that a workload-specific delay can coexist with a generally healthy picture of system-wide performance.

How should IBM Power teams use these findings?
Use the recap as a prompt for local investigation, not as a capacity-planning benchmark. The survey’s narrow base and missing respondent-profile and sampling details prevent a meaningful estimate of how common any issue is across IBM Power organizations.
- Separate estate-wide symptoms from workflow peaks. Review system-wide trends and the timing of document or label-generation runs independently; a short-lived peak can be obscured by broader averages.
- Trace the full transaction path. For a generation slowdown, inspect data retrieval and the communication path to external servers alongside the generation software, rather than assuming the printer or host hardware is the cause.
- Keep history that supports comparison. A baseline is most useful when it spans representative busy periods and can be examined alongside workload timing and changes. The survey reports retention periods, but does not establish a universally sufficient retention target.
- Distinguish unknown from optimized. If teams lack time, metrics, or tooling to assess optimization, record the uncertainty rather than treating it as evidence that no performance issue exists.
