The U.S. added 29,000 nonfarm jobs in September 2026, and unemployment was 4.2%, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Both figures were weaker than the forecasts of 89,000 jobs and 4.1% unemployment cited in Investing.com’s pre-release market brief. The report also revised July and August payrolls down by a combined 60,000, adding to evidence of a softer hiring picture.
What did nonfarm payrolls show?
The BLS said nonfarm payroll employment rose by 29,000 in September, while the unemployment rate was 4.2%. The agency described both measures as having changed little. Its September Employment Situation release distinguishes the two surveys behind those figures: the establishment survey measures nonfarm jobs, hours and earnings; the household survey measures labor-force status, including unemployment.

Health care added 17,000 jobs, less than its average monthly gain of 33,000 over the prior 12 months. Employment in all major industries changed little overall. The unemployment rate had stayed within a narrow 4.1%–4.3% range since March, according to the BLS.
How did the results compare with forecasts?
Investing.com’s October 2 pre-release brief reported economists’ expectations of 89,000 additional jobs and a 4.1% unemployment rate. The published figures—29,000 jobs and 4.2% unemployment—were weaker than those forecasts on both measures. The forecast and the official result are different things: 89,000 and 4.1% were expectations, not the September outcome.

Revisions also changed the recent trend. The BLS revised July payroll growth from 21,000 to a loss of 10,000, and August growth from 162,000 to 133,000. Those two months together were 60,000 lower than previously reported. The August figure of 162,000 in the pre-release brief was therefore superseded by the revised estimate.
What does the report say about labor-market momentum?
The payroll gain was small, but it is only one part of the picture. The household survey’s unemployment rate and participation measures describe labor-force status, while the establishment survey counts jobs and tracks hours and earnings. They are related indicators, not interchangeable readings of the same population or concept.

Wages and hours provide further context: private nonfarm hourly earnings rose 3.0% over the 12 months through September, while the average workweek remained at 34.4 hours. Those data help describe pay and labor input, but neither figure alone establishes the direction of inflation or what the Federal Reserve will do.
Why were bond yields volatile?
The October 2 Investing.com brief was published before the jobs release, so its bond-market figures describe the setup earlier that morning—not the market’s response to the 29,000 payroll result. It reported that a global bond selloff had pushed the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield to its highest intraday level since 2002, before the yield fell by more than 4 basis points. It also said the 2-year yield recorded its largest daily decline since July.

Yields and bond prices generally move in opposite directions: when a bond’s price falls, its yield rises, and vice versa. The brief attributed the easing in the selloff to dovish Federal Reserve commentary and shifting rate expectations. It said the market-implied probability of an October Fed rate hike had dropped to about 30% from 70% earlier that week. Those probabilities were a contemporaneous, pre-release snapshot, not a current reading or a post-report estimate.
Two different maturities matter in that account. The 2-year Treasury is more directly sensitive to expectations for near-term policy rates, while the 10-year is the benchmark long-term yield cited in the brief. The available market account provides context for volatility, but does not establish that one jobs report mechanically determines yields or stock prices.

What else was moving stocks?
In its pre-release snapshot, Investing.com described U.S. equity-index futures as modestly higher. It said stocks had eked out gains in the previous session as an earlier debt-market selloff eased and yields fell, with Micron’s guidance also providing support. These are descriptions of the market before the September employment figures were released, not verified post-release moves.
The brief also cited uncertainty around the Middle East conflict and spending on AI infrastructure as inflation-related risks discussed by analysts. They are market narratives, not quantified causal findings in the available reporting. Deutsche Bank analysts wrote, “Clearly, the monthly jobs reports are always a macro highlight, but this is an important one, as the continued data resilience has been a huge factor supporting U.S. risk assets,” as quoted in that brief.

What the market snapshot can—and cannot—tell you
The BLS release establishes the September labor figures and revisions; it does not report Treasury yields, equity prices or post-release market moves. Investing.com’s market figures and rate probability belong to its pre-release account on October 2. The sources cited here do not establish how yields or stocks moved after the report, so no post-release market reaction should be inferred from those earlier figures.
For readers following the data, the useful distinction is between the labor-market signal and the market’s interpretation. Payrolls, unemployment, wages and hours describe different parts of employment conditions. Investors also weigh inflation risks and expected policy rates, but the September report by itself does not settle either question.
