SEO After the Click: How to Reach Customers in AI Search

Your next customer might never visit Google: an AI-generated summary can answer a question before someone opens a website. That changes how a click happens, but it does not make SEO obsolete. Google says its AI search features rely on core Search systems and indexed pages, while independent studies show that clicks can fall in some contexts. The practical goal is to stay discoverable, earn visits when your page offers something worth exploring, and measure whether discovery leads to customers.

Does SEO still matter when search answers questions directly?

Yes. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on its core Search ranking and quality systems and draw on information retrieved from its Search index. Its Search Central guide says established SEO best practices remain relevant to eligibility and visibility in those features. Google also describes query fan-out: a system can generate related searches to gather information for an AI response. That makes accessible, useful pages part of the discovery process even when a user does not click through. Google Search Central explains how its AI features work.

That is Google’s description of its own systems, not a guarantee that any particular page will appear in an AI answer. Nor does visibility in an answer necessarily produce a visit or a sale. Treat AI search as another surface where sound search fundamentals can help your content be found—not as a replacement for building a useful website.

What the click evidence says—and what it does not

A summary can satisfy a searcher without a traditional result click. In a study of 900 U.S. adults in Pew Research Center’s KnowledgePanel Digital panel, researchers analyzed 68,879 unique Google searches from March 2025; 12,593 produced an AI summary. In results collected in April 2025, 8% of visits to Google pages with a summary led to a click on a traditional search result, compared with 15% of visits without one. A link inside the AI summary was clicked in 1% of visits to pages with a summary. Those figures describe the study’s U.S. users and that period, not a universal or current click-through rate. Pew Research Center details its methods and findings.

In that same dataset, 18% of searches produced an AI summary. Question-word searches were more likely to show one: 60% of queries beginning with question words did, as did 53% of searches with ten or more words. These are study-specific observations, not forecasts of how often your audience will see a summary today.

The result is a real risk to immediate click-through for some searches, especially when a concise answer meets the user’s need. But the study does not show that every site loses traffic, that every type of query behaves alike, or that AI summaries caused any particular publisher’s year-over-year decline.

Why traffic reports appear to disagree

The studies and statements often cited in this debate measure different things:

Evidence What it measures What it can tell you
Pew Research Center, 2025 U.S. users’ next actions on Google pages with or without an AI summary, during a study of searches from March 2025 Traditional result clicks were less common when a summary appeared in that dataset; summary citations received few clicks.
Reuters Institute, 2026 Digital News Report Chartbeat data for more than 2,500 publisher sites, comparing Google organic traffic from November 2024 to November 2025 Traffic was down 33% globally and 38% in the U.S. across that publisher sample. The report says the share attributable to AI Overviews is unclear; the figures do not establish a trend for every business.
Google, August 6, 2025 Google’s account of its aggregate organic click volume and click quality Google’s VP and Head of Search, Liz Reid, wrote that “total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year.” This is the company’s characterization of its data, not an independent measurement.

These findings are not interchangeable. Pew tracked user actions around individual search visits; Reuters Institute reported referral traffic across a network of publisher sites over a year; Google described its own aggregate click data. The populations, time periods, and metrics differ. Taken together, they support neither “all websites are losing traffic because of AI” nor “AI has no effect on traffic.” Reuters Institute sets out the publisher-network results and their limits. How to get found in AI search without chasing hacks

Google’s guidance focuses on making content worth finding and pages accessible to Search. It does not require a separate AI-optimization playbook. Prioritize work that serves readers and keeps your pages eligible to be crawled and indexed:

  • Publish material with a reason to visit. Add original reporting, first-hand expertise, useful examples, distinctive analysis, or detail that a short summary cannot replace. Google’s Liz Reid says people are more likely to click content that helps them learn more, such as an in-depth review, original post, unique perspective, or thoughtful first-person analysis.
  • Make pages technically accessible. Meet Google Search’s technical requirements and allow its crawlers to access the content you want considered. Clear organization helps people and search systems understand the page.
  • Use relevant media where it adds value. Include useful images or video that support the page rather than adding media merely to signal AI readiness.
  • Do not mistake extra markup for eligibility. Google says sites do not need to create an llms.txt file or special markup for its AI Search features, break every page into tiny “chunks,” rewrite content solely for AI, or pursue inauthentic mentions.

These are Google’s recommendations for Google Search; they should not be treated as rules for every other search or AI service. See Google’s full guide to AI features and Search best practices.

Measure business outcomes, not just appearances

An AI citation may indicate visibility, but it is not proof that a prospective customer saw it, visited your site, or became a customer. Separate discovery from outcomes by tracking what each channel contributes:

  • Search visibility: Use Search Console to monitor impressions and clicks from Google Search. Google says Search Console’s generative AI performance report can help site owners understand discovery through its generative features.
  • Visits and referrals: In your analytics, review Google organic traffic alongside referrals from AI chatbots, Discover, direct visits, email, social, and video. A change in one channel does not establish the same change in another.
  • Business results: Track meaningful conversions—such as qualified leads, purchases, or sign-ups—alongside visits. Where possible, connect those outcomes to their source and compare trends over time.
  • Demand beyond the last click: Watch branded searches, repeat visits, returning customers, and direct or email engagement. These indicators can help show whether people remember and return to your business even if an earlier discovery did not produce an immediate click.

Use the measures together. Impressions show exposure, clicks show visits, and conversion data shows whether those visits contribute to business goals. None alone describes the full path from discovery to customer.

Build discovery that does not depend on one search result

SEO remains useful, but a business is exposed when all of its discovery depends on a single platform or a steady stream of search visits. Give satisfied visitors a reason to return through an email list, a customer community, repeat-service reminders, or other direct relationships suited to your business. These channels do not replace search; they give you additional ways to reach people who already value what you offer.

If you prefer a book-length introduction, Ahrefs offers a hardcover edition of its beginner SEO guide, which covers AI’s relationship to SEO and AI search engines. It is an optional learning resource, not a requirement for adapting your site. See the guide’s description.

Will AI search reduce my website traffic?

It may reduce clicks for some searches, and the evidence shows that effect in measured contexts. But available findings do not establish one traffic outcome for every site or prove that AI Overviews alone caused publisher-network declines. Your results will depend on your audience, topic, channel mix, and whether your content gives people a reason to continue beyond an immediate answer.

Keep foundational SEO in place, make your pages distinctly useful, and judge performance by both visibility and customer outcomes. The strongest response to changing search is not to guess at a universal forecast; it is to make your own discovery and conversion data clear enough to guide decisions.
