Sensex and Nifty 50 are both Indian stock-market benchmarks, but they track different exchange universes. Sensex targets 30 companies drawn from the BSE 100, while Nifty 50 tracks 50 stocks listed on the NSE. Both weight constituents by the market value of shares considered available to trade, so neither is inherently better: follow the benchmark that matches the market or portfolio you want to track.

How the indices are built
Sensex: 30 companies selected from the BSE 100
BSE’s methodology sets a target of 30 companies drawn from the BSE 100. Eligibility includes at least six months of listing history on BSE, trading on every trading day during the six-month reference period, and a derivatives contract. BSE ranks eligible companies using six-month average float-adjusted and total market capitalization, alongside traded-value and minimum-weight screens. Selection rules favor existing constituents at specified ranks as the index approaches its target. Qualifying shares with differential voting rights can mean more than 30 securities while the company count remains 30.

#1 Best Overall
Nifty 50: 50 NSE stocks weighted by free float
NSE Indices describes Nifty 50 as a diversified 50-stock index representing important sectors of the economy. It has used free-float market-capitalization weighting since June 26, 2009. Under this approach, promoter, group, locked-in, and other identifiable strategic holdings are treated as non-free-float; the index weight reflects shares considered available to trade. NSE’s index-calculation explanation describes the free-float method, while its equity-indices methodology document is identified as March 2026.
Why Sensex and Nifty 50 can move differently
The indices have different selection universes and constituent counts, which can produce different holdings and company weights. As a result, they need not rise or fall by the same percentage over a given period. This follows from their documented construction; it is not a forecast about which will perform better.

- Follow Nifty 50 if you want NSE’s 50-stock headline benchmark.
- For a portfolio or fund comparison, start with the benchmark the portfolio or fund is intended to track. Compare its holdings and benchmark context rather than selecting an index based only on its name or index-point level.
Neither benchmark is inherently safer or guaranteed to deliver higher returns. The useful choice is the one aligned with the exchange universe or benchmark context you care about.

An index name alone is not enough to assess an investment product. Check which index the fund tracks, then compare the specific fund’s costs, holdings, and tracking behavior. Those details vary by product and date; the index methodology does not establish the merits or terms of any particular fund.
NSE Indices lists categories of ETF and domestic index-fund issuers on its Nifty 50 page. Verify current product availability and details with the provider before investing.
