Sensex and Nifty were trading higher in early session on Friday, October 9, 2026, recovering part of Thursday’s steep fall. The reports available for this update confirm an intraday bounce only. They do not establish how Friday closed or whether the gain held, and crude oil and IT stocks remain the two factors most likely to cap it.
Where the market stood on Friday morning
The clearest way to read the day is to compare three figures: Thursday’s close, a Friday early-session reading and the Friday close, which is not yet confirmed. Each figure carries a different status, so keep them separate.

| Index | Thursday, Oct 8 close | Friday, Oct 9 early trade | Friday close |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sensex | 71,593.24, down 1,045.46 points (1.44%) per PTI | 72,046.19, up 452.95 points (0.63%) at 9:36 IST per The Times of India live report | Not confirmed in the reports cited |
| Nifty 50 | 22,231.80, down 371.25 points (1.64%) per NSE and PTI | 22,391.80, reported as up 0.71% at 9:37 IST per The Times of India live report | Not confirmed in the reports cited |
Two cautions apply to the Friday column. First, these are timestamped intraday observations, and the live report’s values changed across its updates. Second, the Nifty line does not reconcile internally: 22,391.80 implies a gain of 160.00 points over Thursday’s 22,231.80, while the same report gives a change of 157.75 points. The 0.71% figure is consistent with the smaller change, so read the Nifty level as approximate until a later, verified quote is available.

What drove Thursday’s selloff
Reuters attributed the October 8 decline to four pressures that reinforced each other. PTI and Reuters describe the same sequence, though they differ in how they state the oil move.
Crude oil and Middle East risk
Reuters said Brent hovered near $104 per barrel after rising about 4% on Thursday, citing Middle East tensions and fears of supply disruption linked to a hurricane approaching the US Gulf Coast. PTI reported a sharper move, with Brent at $104.50 after a 4.25% rise. Both figures are from reports of the same day and are not independently checked against exchange or commodity-market data. For Indian equities, higher crude raises the import bill and feeds into inflation expectations, which is why oil is treated as a market-wide headwind rather than an energy-sector story.

RBI tightening and bond yields
PTI reported that the Reserve Bank of India raised its benchmark repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on October 7, 2026. It was the central bank’s first hike in nearly four years, and it moved the policy stance from “neutral” to “calibrated tightening.” Reuters said global bond yields rose at the same time. Higher yields make rate-sensitive sectors such as banks, real estate and autos less attractive relative to fixed income, and that was the main channel analysts cited.

This headwind was further amplified by persistent FII outflows, harder bond yields, and a depreciating INR.”
Rupee weakness and foreign selling
Reuters reported that the rupee weakened during the session. It also reported net foreign portfolio investor selling of ₹129.44 billion (about $1.3 billion) on October 8, the largest single-day outflow since May 29, 2026. Domestic institutional investors were net buyers of ₹107.03 billion on the same day. That split matters: domestic buying cushioned the index, but it did not offset the foreign exit. These are one-day flow figures from Reuters and do not indicate the direction of flows on October 9.
Breadth was weaker than the index suggested
PTI reported that every BSE sectoral index ended lower on October 8. The BSE SmallCap Select index fell 2.58% and the MidCap Select index fell 2.53%, so the damage extended beyond the large-cap benchmarks. On BSE, 3,426 stocks declined, 1,003 advanced and 225 were unchanged. Those breadth figures are PTI’s and have not been checked against BSE’s own release.

Why IT stocks are in focus
Reuters said weakness in heavyweight IT stocks could limit any recovery. Two developments drove that concern, and they are company-specific and regulatory rather than macro:
- Weak revenue growth at a bellwether. Reuters reported that Tata Consultancy Services posted its weakest September-quarter revenue growth in three years, which raised questions about client spending and demand across the sector.
- New US labor-certification action. Reuters reported that the US suspended major IT outsourcing firms from the Permanent Labor Certification Program, a key green-card pathway. The report presents this as a development that adds uncertainty for the sector.
Sumit Singhania, head of research at Bajaj Broking, said in Reuters’ report: “Indian IT companies are already operating under pressure, and this additional regulatory development adds another layer of uncertainty.” Read these developments as affecting parts of the IT sector, not every Indian IT company equally. The reports do not give company-by-company exposure to the labor-certification suspension.

Rebound or reversal?
Reuters framed the Friday opening as a possible technical rebound after an oversold selloff. That is a description of short-term price behavior: after a steep one-day fall, buyers often step in to take advantage of lower prices, and the index recovers part of the loss. It does not, on its own, show that the cause of the fall has eased.
A sustained trend change would need evidence beyond one morning. The conditions to watch are whether crude stays near current levels or falls, whether global bond yields stop rising, whether the rupee stabilises, whether foreign investors stop selling, and whether IT stocks stop falling. Each of these is observable in the same market reports that carried the October 8 figures.
How to check the close
- Open NSE’s Nifty 50 page and note the closing value and its time stamp. Compare it with the October 8 close of 22,231.80.
- Confirm the Sensex close from BSE’s official index data, not from a live blog, since intraday reports are updated through the session.
- If a published close differs from the early-session figures above, use the close. The intraday readings in this article are superseded by it.
Quoted intraday figures from live pages should always be read with their time stamps. A quote at 9:36 IST describes that minute, not the session.
