Sensex, Nifty Slip 0.13% as Profit-Booking Ends Four-Session Rally; IT Stocks Limit Losses

Indian equities surrendered early gains on July 8, 2026, as investors booked profits after four consecutive winning sessions. The Sensex closed 104.35 points, or 0.13%, lower at 78,180.72 after reaching 78,664.92 intraday. The Nifty fell 31.65 points, also 0.13%, to 24,398.70. Weak Asian markets, caution before the US Federal Reserve minutes and renewed geopolitical concerns around the Strait of Hormuz added pressure, while information-technology shares helped contain the decline.

How the benchmarks finished

The market’s headline move was modest, but the session’s path showed a clear change in sentiment. Both indices began with gains, then slipped as traders used the strength to lock in profits. The late selling ended a four-session rally rather than signaling a broad collapse in the benchmark indices.

Sensex 78,180.72 Down 104.35 points (0.13%) Reached 78,664.92 before retreating
Nifty 24,398.70 Down 31.65 points (0.13%) Gave up its early advance

Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said profit booking intensified in the latter half of the session. He attributed the weaker tone to softness across Asian markets and investor caution ahead of the US Fed minutes, while noting that IT stocks continued to provide support ahead of June-quarter earnings.

Why Sensex and Nifty fell

Profit-taking after a four-session rise

Investors who had benefited from the recent run-up took money off the table when prices opened higher. That selling was enough to turn early gains into a lower close, even though the final percentage decline remained limited.

Weak Asian market signals

Lower or hesitant trading in Asian markets reduced risk appetite in India. Global market cues often influence domestic opening sentiment, and the weak regional backdrop made buyers less willing to extend the rally.

Waiting for US Fed minutes

Traders also reduced exposure before the release of the Federal Reserve’s meeting minutes. The minutes can alter expectations for US interest rates, bond yields and foreign-investor flows, so caution ahead of the communication contributed to the late-session selling.

Rank #2

Geopolitical and oil-market risk

Ponmudi R, chief executive of Enrich Money, cited a renewed attack on an oil vessel in the Strait of Hormuz as another drag on sentiment. Brent crude rose 1.22% to $72.87 a barrel during the session. Higher crude prices can affect India’s import bill and inflation outlook, making the commodity move relevant to equity investors even when benchmark losses are small.

Which stocks limited the losses?

Information-technology shares were the main stabilising force. HCL Technologies gained 3.08%, and Tech Mahindra, Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services also advanced. The gains came ahead of June-quarter results and followed a period of weakness in the sector, giving investors a reason to add to technology positions while other parts of the market faced profit-taking.

Nair described the move as a recovery in IT shares ahead of the earnings season. Their gains offset weakness elsewhere, helping keep the Sensex and Nifty decline to 0.13%.

Why Trent crashed

Trent was the biggest Sensex loser, dropping 12.42%. The fall was stock-specific: the company’s June-quarter revenue growth missed market expectations. The sharp reaction shows why the session cannot be explained only by global cues or index-level profit booking. Investors also repriced individual companies when operating updates failed to meet the growth assumptions embedded in their share prices.

Market breadth showed broader weakness

The headline indices understated the number of declining shares. On the BSE, 2,633 stocks fell, 1,599 rose and 165 were unchanged. Small-cap shares dropped 1.08%, while the mid-cap index declined 0.15%.

Market segment Session result
Sensex Down 0.13%
Nifty Down 0.13%
Small-cap index Down 1.08%
Mid-cap index Down 0.15%
BSE stocks 2,633 declined; 1,599 advanced; 165 unchanged

This breadth indicates that selling pressure was more widespread outside the largest index constituents. Strong IT performance and the relatively small benchmark move masked a tougher day for many smaller companies.

What flows and commodities added to the picture

Foreign institutional investors bought shares worth Rs 243.03 crore on the preceding Monday. That was a supportive flow signal, but it did not prevent profit-taking in this session. Daily institutional activity, crude prices and overseas market direction can change quickly, so the figures describe this trading day rather than a durable trend.

How to interpret the session

The evidence points to several forces working together rather than one decisive trigger:

  • Primary domestic factor: profit booking after four rising sessions.
  • Global factor: weak Asian markets and uncertainty before the US Fed minutes.
  • Geopolitical factor: renewed concern about shipping security in the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Commodity factor: Brent crude at $72.87 a barrel, up 1.22%.
  • Company-specific factor: Trent’s 12.42% fall after below-expectation revenue growth.
  • Offsetting sector factor: gains in HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, Infosys and TCS ahead of results.

Because the report covers one session, it does not establish a forward price target or investment recommendation. The most useful distinction for readers is between the mild benchmark decline and the much wider weakness revealed by market breadth, alongside the contrasting strength in IT and the sharp, earnings-driven drop in Trent.
