Indian shares sold off sharply on Thursday, October 8, 2026. The Sensex closed at 71,593.24, down 1,045.46 points (1.44%), while the Nifty 50 ended at 22,231.80, down 371.25 points (1.64%). The Nifty had touched a reported 52-week low of 22,179 during the session. These are historical closing figures, not a live market update.

How the Sensex and Nifty finished

ANI, in a report republished by WebIndia123 on October 8, gave the following benchmark figures:

Index October 8 close Daily change Session detail
BSE Sensex 71,593.24 Down 1,045.46 points (1.44%) Previous close: 72,638.70
Nifty 50 22,231.80 Down 371.25 points (1.64%) Previous close: 22,603.05; reported session low: 22,179

The Nifty’s reported low was below its close, so it describes an intraday level rather than the final settlement. The day’s percentage loss was also steeper for the Nifty than for the Sensex.

How widespread was the selling?

The decline extended beyond the two headline indices. The Economic Times reported that BSE-listed companies lost more than ₹10 lakh crore in market capitalization. Its account of NSE breadth showed 2,950 declining shares, 660 advancing shares and 112 unchanged—decliners substantially outnumbered gainers.

Pressure was especially pronounced among mid- and small-cap shares and in some cyclical sectors. ANI reported the Nifty Midcap 50 down 2.71% and Nifty Metal down more than 3%. The Economic Times said the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 fell by as much as 3%, while Nifty Metal and Nifty Realty each dropped more than 3%. These figures refer to different indices, so the mid-cap readings should not be treated as interchangeable.

Why did the market fall that day?

Contemporary coverage pointed to several pressures acting at once, rather than establishing one definitive cause. The Economic Times and ANI cited persistent foreign investor selling, higher oil prices, concerns about the Reserve Bank of India’s policy stance and borrowing conditions, elevated US Treasury yields, worries about possible Federal Reserve tightening, and weak global market cues.

Brent crude was reported above $102–$103 a barrel and around $104 in coverage of the session. Those are reported price levels, not a single verified closing quote here. News reports also described selling as intensifying after technical support levels gave way. That sequence may help explain the market narrative, but it does not measure how much each factor contributed to the decline.

Foreign investor flows

The Economic Times reported, citing provisional data, that foreign investors net sold more than ₹6,121 crore on Wednesday, October 7, and had recorded nearly ₹57,000 crore in net selling over nine consecutive sessions through Wednesday. These are the publication’s reported provisional flow figures; they were not independently confirmed here against a primary exchange release.

Reported RBI policy move

ANI’s report said the RBI raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and moved toward “calibrated tightening.” The specific October 2026 action is attributable here to contemporary news coverage: the official RBI policy result available for corroboration concerned an older decision and does not verify this reported move. Accordingly, the policy detail should not be read as independently confirmed by an RBI statement.

What analysts said—and what the comments establish

Ajit Mishra, SVP, Research at Religare Broking, told ANI that the indices remained under pressure for most of the session after a weak opening and settled near the day’s lows, reflecting broad selling. Analyst Vipin Dixena cautioned that oversold conditions should not automatically be treated as a buying signal. That is an attributed market opinion, not a forecast or personalized investment advice.

Together, the closing losses, broad negative market breadth, sector declines and reported flows show that selling was widespread. They do not establish a precise causal ranking among oil, rates, global cues, investor flows or technical levels.
