Which shares and sectors led the rally?

Information technology was the strongest sectoral theme. The BSE IT index rose 2.91%, and the Focused IT index advanced 2.96%. TCS shares gained 4.23%; the company’s July–September-quarter net profit was reported up 15% to Rs 13,884 crore. ITC rose 4.78%, the largest gain among the Sensex constituents named in the report. Adani Ports, Infosys, HCL Tech, Larsen & Toubro and HDFC Bank were also listed among major gainers. Reliance Industries was the only laggard in the blue-chip group, the report said.

All BSE sectoral indices finished higher. The report listed the following gains:

Index or sector Reported change
Focused IT +2.96%
IT +2.91%
Hospitals +2.46%
FMCG +2.02%
MidSmall Private Banks Quality Tilt +1.91%

The BSE market breadth was positive: 2,516 shares advanced, 1,867 declined and 227 were unchanged. Mid- and small-cap select indexes also rose, though less than the IT indexes.

What explanations did market commentators give?

The PTI report attributed several interpretations to market professionals, rather than establishing a single cause for the rise. They cited bargain buying and short covering after the sharp correction, TCS’s quarterly results and improving global cues. Some also pointed to easing crude prices and reduced concern about immediate US military action against Iran. These are commentators’ explanations; one session’s price moves do not prove which factor drove the rally.

Brent crude was reported down 1.32% to USD 102.9 per barrel. The report connected the decline with easing geopolitical concerns, but it does not establish that lower crude alone caused equities to rise. Vinod Nair of Geojit Investments also cited confidence in AI-related revenue opportunities for IT firms, while other quoted commentary mentioned inflation concerns and global bond yields.

What was happening in other markets?

Asian trading was mixed in the report: Japan’s Nikkei 225 ended slightly lower, while Shanghai’s SSE Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng closed higher; South Korean markets were closed. European markets were trading higher at the time of the report, while US markets had closed mostly lower the previous day. These snapshots cover different market hours and should not be read as a uniform global move.

The report also said foreign institutional investors sold equities worth Rs 12,943.58 crore on Thursday, citing exchange data. That figure refers to the previous session, not Friday’s trading.

Does one rebound signal a change in direction?

No. The October 9 advance recovered part of the previous session’s losses, but the reported daily and weekly figures cannot establish a lasting trend. The PTI report covers that Friday’s session; subsequent market performance is not included in its account.
