India’s Sensex and Nifty fell in early trade on Thursday, October 8, 2026, amid concern about tighter monetary conditions, rising crude prices, foreign fund selling and weak global markets, according to a PTI report carried by The Tribune. The report also said the Reserve Bank of India had raised its repo rate a day earlier, but the October 7 decision is not confirmed by the RBI materials available here.

How far did the Sensex and Nifty fall?

The PTI report carried by The Tribune said the 30-share BSE Sensex was down 264.97 points at 72,408.15 in early trade. The 50-share NSE Nifty had fallen 87.50 points to 22,507.65. These are intraday readings, not closing prices, and can change during the session.

What pressures were surrounding the decline?

The report described several pressures at once, rather than establishing one cause for the market move:

  • Interest-rate concerns: The report said investors were responding to a tighter domestic policy outlook and expectations that financial conditions could remain restrictive.
  • Crude oil: Brent crude was reported 2.02% higher at $102.2 a barrel. The quoted price and percentage are time-sensitive market figures.
  • Foreign fund flows: Citing exchange data, the report said foreign institutional investors sold equities worth ₹6,121.37 crore on Wednesday, October 7.
  • Overseas markets: The report pointed to lower Asian markets and U.S. markets ending Wednesday lower as part of the broader risk backdrop.

These factors provide context for the early decline; the report does not demonstrate that any one of them caused it.

What did the report say about the RBI?

The PTI report said the RBI raised the benchmark repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on October 7, describing it as the first increase in nearly four years. It also said the six-member Monetary Policy Committee voted unanimously to change the policy stance from “neutral” to “calibrated tightening,” leaving the possibility of further hikes open and near-term cuts off the table.

Those October policy details should be treated as claims attributed to the report, not as independently confirmed RBI action. The RBI materials available for this coverage included rates information dated July 2026 showing a 5.25% repo rate and a result for the August 3–5, 2026 MPC resolution; neither verifies what happened in October. The contemporaneous RBI resolution is needed to confirm the reported decision and stance.

What market commentators said

The report quoted Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, describing a cautious outlook amid the reported rate increase, elevated Treasury yields and geopolitical uncertainty. Because his comments take the rate increase as their premise, that policy detail remains subject to confirmation against the RBI’s October statement.

It also quoted Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, Founder & CEO of HST Wealth, who said the concern extended beyond the reported RBI move to the prospect of tighter domestic and global monetary conditions persisting. His remarks are commentary reproduced by the report, not independent confirmation of the RBI decision.

What the early-trade figures do—and do not—show

The index levels describe a moment in Thursday’s trading session, not the final result for the day. The crude price and foreign-investor flow figure are also tied to the report’s stated time period. All should be checked against current exchange and market records before being treated as up-to-date. The available information supports describing a broad set of pressures around the fall; it does not support assigning the move to a single trigger.
