It looks strongest for listeners who value sound quality and serviceability over having the very best noise cancelling. Independent reviews praise its comfort and useful ANC, but note that some listeners may find the treble sharp and that noise reduction falls short of the top performers.
What’s new in the Momentum True Wireless 5?
Announced on August 20, 2026, the MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 (MTW 5) is a redesigned flagship, not just a minor update. Sennheiser describes a new earbud and case design, adaptive hybrid active noise cancellation (ANC), automatic anti-wind processing, Natural Transparency, and Dolby Atmos spatial audio with interactive head tracking. The company also says the batteries in the earbuds and Qi-enabled case can be replaced. Sennheiser’s US product page lists a charging case, USB-C cable, XS/S/M/L ear tips, battery-replacement tool and documentation in the box.

Sennheiser Consumer Hearing President Lilika Beck called the combination of compact size, high-fidelity acoustics and a replaceable battery “a major breakthrough” in the company’s August 20, 2026 announcement. That describes the manufacturer’s design ambition; independent reviews are more mixed on how the earbuds perform against the strongest rivals.
How does the MTW 5 sound?
What Hi-Fi’s listening review praises the MTW 5 for spaciousness, detail, precision and dynamic handling. The reviewer found the Sony WF-1000XM6 more textured and expressive, however, and reported that cymbals or edgy strings could sound a little hard-edged in the Sennheisers’ upper treble. That response is listener-dependent; What Hi-Fi says the in-app EQ can help if the high frequencies feel too prominent. Read What Hi-Fi’s review.

- Built For Life: The secure-fitting ergonomic design assures superb wearing comfort and uncompromised audio enjoyment in any environment. Dust- and splash-resistant protection (IP54 rating) lets your audio accompany all your adventures.
- Clearer Calls, Smarter Microphones: Digital beamforming microphones, plus a bone conduction mic, and AI voice isolation keep your voice clear and natural on calls, even in busy environments, at home or on the move.
Sennheiser characterizes its tuning as retaining the family sound while refining midrange, bass control and upper treble. Its stated specifications include 7 mm TrueResponse dynamic drivers, aptX Adaptive and aptX Lossless, wireless audio options up to 24-bit/96 kHz, and Dolby Atmos with head tracking. These are manufacturer specifications, not a promise that every listener will hear an improvement. High-resolution and lossless playback depends on the phone or other source, software, content and settings; spatial audio likewise requires compatible playback and content. The Smart Control Plus app includes sound personalization, an 8-band equalizer and presets, according to Sennheiser’s support information.
How good are ANC, fit and calls?
RTINGS reports that the MTW 5’s ANC reduces noise across the frequency spectrum and is useful for travel and office work, but does not match the very best noise-cancelling earbuds. The same assessment found the redesigned fit very comfortable and stable, including during workouts. Those are review findings, not a guarantee that the shape will suit every ear. Sennheiser lists IP54 durability, which is a stated product rating rather than a reason to expose the earbuds to more water or dust than necessary. See RTINGS’ review and test summary.

The feature set includes adaptive ANC, automatic anti-wind processing and Natural Transparency. Sennheiser says the call system combines microphones, bone-conduction voice sensors and AI speech extraction. In SoundGuys’ two-week review, the reviewer found call attenuation generally good, with echoes and wind as exceptions. SoundGuys also describes several hours of comfortable listening after trying different tip sizes. Treat that as one reviewer’s experience, especially if calls in windy or reverberant places are important to you. Read SoundGuys’ review.

How long does the battery last?
Sennheiser claims up to 12 hours of continuous playback on one charge and up to 40 hours total with the case; it also says an eight-minute quick charge can provide up to one hour of listening. Those are manufacturer maximums, and actual runtime depends on features and settings. RTINGS measured 6.5 hours of continuous playback with ANC enabled. That independent test condition is not directly equivalent to Sennheiser’s maximum-use claim. RTINGS’ test summary provides the measured figure.

- Note : If the size of the earbud tips does not match the size of your ear canals or the headset is not worn properly in your ears, you may not obtain the correct sound qualities or call performance. Change the earbud tips to ones that fit more snugly in your ear.Specific uses for product : Travel,Sports and Exercise

Can you replace the MTW 5 batteries?
Yes: Sennheiser says the batteries in both earbuds and the wireless-charging case are replaceable, and the listed in-box contents include a battery-replacement tool. That is a meaningful distinction for owners who hope to keep earbuds beyond the useful life of their original cells.
There is a practical caveat: SoundGuys describes the battery as proprietary and says the case’s bottom plate and one screw provide access, with replacement cells to be obtained from Sennheiser. Current battery stock, prices and service terms vary by region and are not established here. Before buying on the strength of repairability, check whether replacement cells and support are available where you live. Replaceability is a design feature; it does not by itself guarantee a convenient or inexpensive repair.

How does it compare with other premium earbuds?
The evidence supports a priority-based comparison, not a single overall winner. What Hi-Fi directly discusses the MTW 5’s sound against Sony’s WF-1000XM6, while naming Sony, Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Generation) and Technics EAH-AZ100 as alternatives. SoundGuys also names Apple AirPods Pro 3 among close competitors when replaceable batteries are not the deciding factor. The reviewed material does not provide comparable measurements across all these models for runtime, ANC, calls, fit or current price, so those points should not be treated as head-to-head results.
| Decision point | What the evidence says about the MTW 5 | What to check when comparing |
|---|---|---|
| Sound | What Hi-Fi praises spaciousness, detail, precision and dynamics, but reports that the upper treble can sound hard-edged to some listeners. | Listen for treble comfort and compare directly if possible; consider whether app EQ suits your preferences. |
| ANC | RTINGS finds noise reduction useful, but short of the very best ANC earbuds. | Compare independent tests under similar conditions if maximum isolation is your priority. |
| Fit and stability | RTINGS reports a comfortable, stable fit; SoundGuys says tip-size experimentation helped its reviewer. | Check the available tip sizes and your own fit, particularly for workouts. |
| Calls | SoundGuys reports generally good attenuation, with echoes and wind as weak spots. | Consider where you take calls most often; performance can differ in quiet, windy and reverberant settings. |
| Battery runtime | Sennheiser claims up to 12 hours per charge and 40 hours with the case; RTINGS measured 6.5 hours with ANC enabled. | Compare test conditions, especially ANC use, rather than treating maximum claims and measured results as equivalent. |
| Battery serviceability | The earbud and case batteries are designed to be replaceable; SoundGuys says cells are proprietary and sourced from Sennheiser. | Verify local replacement-cell stock, price and service terms before relying on a future repair. |
| Codecs and spatial audio | Sennheiser specifies aptX Adaptive, aptX Lossless, up to 24-bit/96 kHz options and Dolby Atmos with head tracking. | Confirm that your playback device, software, content and selected settings support the features you want. |
| Price and warranty | SoundGuys reported an original price of $299.95 in 2026; that is not a verified current offer. Current warranty terms are not stated in the cited reviews. | Check current local pricing, warranty coverage and regional service terms at purchase. |
Who should buy the Sennheiser MTW 5?
The MTW 5 is a good candidate if you want a premium, detailed presentation, value a stable fit, and see replaceable batteries as an important ownership feature. It is a less obvious fit if your first priority is class-leading ANC or if you are sensitive to prominent upper treble. Before choosing it, make sure the fit works for your ears, the sound suits your preferences, and replacement cells can actually be obtained in your region.
