That is a strong feature set, not proof that it beats every rival. Reviewers have praised its soundstage but also questioned its default tuning, so whether it is worth buying depends on your sound preferences, device compatibility and the price available where you live.
What’s new in the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless?
Announced on May 25, 2026, the around-ear MOMENTUM 5 Wireless builds on its predecessor rather than starting over. Sennheiser says it carries forward the 42 mm dynamic transducer, manufactured at the company’s facility in Tullamore, Ireland, while upgrading several parts of the overall experience. Those are manufacturer descriptions; they do not establish how the headphones perform against competitors in independent, controlled testing. Sennheiser’s launch announcement outlines the changes.

- Adaptive ANC: Hybrid adaptive noise cancellation is designed to adjust to surrounding sound.
- More microphone coverage: Sennheiser lists four microphones per side and beamforming for noise reduction. Its launch announcement says voice-chatter reduction is up to three times more effective; that is the company’s comparison, not an independent measurement.
- Spatial audio: Dolby Atmos with head tracking was described as enabled by a day-one firmware update. Listening also depends on an Atmos-enabled source device and supported content.
- Sound personalization: The Smart Control Plus app for iOS and Android provides app-based sound personalization.
- Exchangeable battery: The 700 mAh lithium-ion battery is designed to be exchanged, giving it a practical serviceability distinction from headphones with no user-exchangeable battery.
The launch specification is Bluetooth 5.4. Sennheiser mentioned Bluetooth 6.0 as a possible future firmware update, so it should not be treated as a feature already delivered with the launch model. The company’s support specifications list SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, aptX Lossless, aptX Adaptive and Snapdragon Sound. Check your source device and operating system: codec support on the headphones alone does not ensure a particular codec will be available in your setup. Sennheiser’s support specifications list the model’s documented features.
Sound: a promising stage, with a tuning caveat
The review picture is encouraging but not unanimous. TechRadar praised the soundstage while describing the out-of-box sound as disappointing compared with the best headphones and flagging weaker treble that may need adjustment. That is one outlet’s listening judgment, not a result that every listener should expect. It does, however, make the app’s personalization relevant: buyers who like to adjust sound may be better placed to tailor the presentation than listeners who expect their preferred tuning straight from the box. TechRadar’s June 21, 2026 review discusses both the praise and the reservation.

What Hi-Fi? described the MOMENTUM 5 as a strong premium wireless option, while pointing readers to the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Sennheiser HDB 630 as alternatives. That recommendation is not a controlled head-to-head result, and the available reviews do not establish a universal winner. What Hi-Fi?’s review provides its assessment.
Battery life, weight and everyday compatibility
Sennheiser rates the MOMENTUM 5 for up to 57 hours of music playback with Bluetooth and ANC enabled, tested with an iPhone at medium volume. This is a manufacturer figure under the stated test conditions, not independently measured battery life or a guarantee that every listener will get the same runtime. The exchangeable 700 mAh battery is a separate benefit: the design makes battery replacement possible, though the specification alone does not establish replacement cost, availability or the process for obtaining service.

The support specifications put the weight at approximately 290 g. Before buying, consider whether you can try them on or return them if the fit does not suit you.

How it compares with the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Sennheiser HDB 630
The most useful comparison is not a claim that one model wins every category. Weigh the features against how you listen and which devices you own. The named review coverage identifies the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Sennheiser HDB 630 as alternatives, but the evidence here does not provide a controlled, like-for-like test across them.
Rank #3
- Audiophile tuning: Sennheiser’s in-house 42 mm transducer and refined acoustic design deliver a neutral audiophile sound with lifelike mids, stunning detail, and a wide, natural soundstage. With minimal digital processing ensuring pure fidelity true to the original recording.
- Wireless or wired: Enjoy high-resolution wireless sound with support for aptX HD and aptX Adaptive, especially when paired with the included BTD 700 Bluetooth adapter. For maximum purity, connect via USB-C for lossless listening up to 24-bit/96 kHz.
- Parametric EQ: Expert-level equalization lets you define frequency bands, widths, and filters to precisely shape your sound. Tailor bass, enhance vocals, or fine-tune for any genre, just like a mastering engineer.
- Adaptive ANC & Transparency Mode: Powerful noise cancellation blocks distractions without degrading clarity, dynamics, or balance. Transparency Mode instantly lets in surrounding sounds when you need to stay aware.
- Listen for days, not hours: A class-leading 60-hour battery keeps you going through long trips or work weeks. Just 10 minutes of fast charging adds up to 7 hours of playtime, ideal for when you’re on the move.
| Decision factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Sound and EQ | Whether the default tuning suits you, and whether you are comfortable adjusting sound in the app. TechRadar’s criticism of out-of-box tuning is a review judgment, not a universal finding. |
| Noise cancellation and calls | Compare reviews or try the models in the environments where you need them. Sennheiser’s voice-chatter improvement figure is a company claim, not an independent comparative result. |
| Battery endurance and serviceability | Compare the conditions behind each brand’s battery estimate, and whether battery exchange matters to you. The MOMENTUM 5’s up-to-57-hour figure uses Bluetooth and ANC on with an iPhone at medium volume. |
| Codec and device compatibility | Confirm the codecs supported by your phone, computer or adapter as well as the headphones. The MOMENTUM 5 support specifications list aptX Lossless among its formats. |
| Spatial audio | Check that your source device, firmware and content support the Dolby Atmos with head tracking experience you want. |
| Comfort and price | Fit is individual, while prices and availability vary by market and date. Compare current local offers rather than relying on launch prices. |
Launch pricing and availability are not today’s price

The MOMENTUM 5 is worth considering if you want a premium wireless headphone with a broad codec list, app-based tuning, adaptive ANC, head-tracked spatial audio and a battery designed to be exchanged. Its competitive case is strongest for buyers who value that combination and are willing to assess the default sound for themselves.
