It is not a no-compromise choice: at about 290 g it is relatively heavy, and reviewers found its noise cancellation useful but not class-leading. Whether it is a good fit depends especially on your preferred sound, comfort over long sessions, and how much you value battery replaceability.
How does the MOMENTUM 5 sound?
Reviews broadly praise the MOMENTUM 5’s sound, but they also show why personal preference matters. TechCrunch reviewer Aisha Malik, after several weeks with the headphones, described natural vocals, strong bass that did not dominate, and a balanced overall presentation. TechRadar’s reviewer praised the soundstage and personalization options, but needed to adjust the default sound to get the result they preferred.

Sennheiser lists 42 mm dynamic drivers and says the transducer hardware is unchanged from the MOMENTUM 4. In the Smart Control Plus app, you can use an 8-band equalizer or Sound Personalization, but not both at once. That gives you meaningful ways to shape the sound; it does not guarantee that the default tuning will suit you without adjustment.

Sennheiser lists Bluetooth 5.4 and support for SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, aptX Lossless, aptX Adaptive, and Snapdragon Sound. Which codec you actually use depends on the paired device and its software, so the list is not a promise that every phone, computer, or app will use every format. The Smart Control Plus app is available for iOS and Android.
#1 Best Overall
- Signature Sennheiser Sound, Refined: Experience brilliant, emotionally rich audio with a high fidelity 42mm HD 600 inspired driver, meticulously tuned to deliver exceptional clarity, detail, and natural balance at any volume.
- Reference Grade Wireless Audio: Advanced Bluetooth codecs including aptX Lossless, aptX Adaptive, and AAC preserve every detail, so music, movies, and games sound immersive, dynamic, and true to the source.
- Best Ever Sennheiser Noise Cancellation: Hybrid adaptive ANC is up to 3× stronger in the midrange than MOMENTUM 4 Wireless, powered by 8 digital microphones for deeper quiet and fewer distractions wherever you listen.
- Exceptional Battery Life: Enjoy up to 57 hours of playtime with ANC on. A replaceable battery extends product lifespan, helping reduce electronic waste while delivering years of premium sound.
- Immerse or Stay Aware: Block out the world completely or engage Natural Transparency to hear your surroundings naturally, without breaking immersion. Enhanced Anti Wind Mode keeps outdoor listening clear.
The headphones also support Dolby Atmos spatial audio. Sennheiser’s announcement describes head-tracking spatial audio, but availability can depend on firmware and content; check that the feature works with your intended setup.
How good is the noise cancellation?
The MOMENTUM 5 reduces noise effectively in some everyday situations, but the available reviews do not support calling it a leader across all noise types. Malik reported that nearby voices and chatter became noticeably quieter, while plane-engine noise was not fully blocked. TechRadar’s reviewer found that ANC struggled to hush everyday conversation or traffic completely.
Sennheiser says the MOMENTUM 5 delivers up to three times stronger ANC than the MOMENTUM 4 in midrange frequencies. That is a manufacturer claim with a specific frequency scope, not a general independent rating or a guarantee that voices, traffic, and low-frequency rumble will all be reduced three times as much. If your priority is silence during flights or commutes, compare listening impressions for the specific noises you encounter rather than relying on that headline figure.

How long does the battery last, and can you replace it?
Sennheiser rates the MOMENTUM 5 for up to 57 hours of Bluetooth playback with ANC enabled, tested with an iPhone at mid volume. That is a manufacturer maximum under stated conditions, not a guaranteed runtime for every device, volume level, or listening pattern. TechCrunch’s reviewer said the battery life held up during her testing and called it impressive.
The 700 mAh lithium-ion battery is exchangeable, and Sennheiser says users can replace it. That is a useful longevity advantage over headphones with a built-in battery, but it does not establish that replacement cells are currently sold in every market. Confirm local battery availability before buying if replacement is central to your decision.
Sennheiser’s specification page lists approximately two hours for a full charge and up to seven hours of playback from a 10-minute charge. A separate Sennheiser support FAQ gives a different estimate of approximately 10 hours from 10 minutes with ANC on, so the fast-charge figure is not consistent across its official pages. Treat the seven-hour figure as the conservative specification-page estimate rather than a universal guarantee.

- Audiophile tuning: Sennheiser’s in-house 42 mm transducer and refined acoustic design deliver a neutral audiophile sound with lifelike mids, stunning detail, and a wide, natural soundstage. With minimal digital processing ensuring pure fidelity true to the original recording.
- Wireless or wired: Enjoy high-resolution wireless sound with support for aptX HD and aptX Adaptive, especially when paired with the included BTD 700 Bluetooth adapter. For maximum purity, connect via USB-C for lossless listening up to 24-bit/96 kHz.
- Parametric EQ: Expert-level equalization lets you define frequency bands, widths, and filters to precisely shape your sound. Tailor bass, enhance vocals, or fine-tune for any genre, just like a mastering engineer.
- Adaptive ANC & Transparency Mode: Powerful noise cancellation blocks distractions without degrading clarity, dynamics, or balance. Transparency Mode instantly lets in surrounding sounds when you need to stay aware.
- Listen for days, not hours: A class-leading 60-hour battery keeps you going through long trips or work weeks. Just 10 minutes of fast charging adds up to 7 hours of playtime, ideal for when you’re on the move.
What are the main compromises?
Weight and fit
Sennheiser lists the weight at approximately 290 g; SoundGuys gives 291 g. Malik found the MOMENTUM 5 heavier than the Sony WH-1000XM6 and less comfortable than some Sony or Apple alternatives. Comfort is individual, but if you wear headphones for long, uninterrupted sessions, weight and fit deserve as much attention as sound quality.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesANC and ingress protection
As described above, the ANC can soften voices and chatter but may not fully suppress engines, traffic, or conversation. Sennheiser’s US comparison table says the MOMENTUM 5 has no IP rating. SoundGuys also lists the lack of an ingress-protection rating among its drawbacks, so do not assume the headphones are protected against water or dust.
Features that depend on your setup
The supported codec depends on the source device and software, while spatial audio can depend on firmware and content. Sennheiser says gaming mode is available with its separately sold BTD 700 dongle and lists the dongle as compatible. If you are considering that setup, verify compatibility with your device and check availability in your market.

MOMENTUM 5 versus MOMENTUM 4
Sennheiser’s comparison points to a trade-off rather than a simple upgrade in every specification: the MOMENTUM 5 adds a replaceable battery, newer listed Bluetooth, Dolby Atmos, and revised ANC, while the MOMENTUM 4 has a slightly higher stated maximum runtime.
| Specification | MOMENTUM 5 Wireless | MOMENTUM 4 |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth | 5.4 | 5.2 |
| Battery life with ANC on | Up to 57 hours; Sennheiser’s stated test condition is an iPhone at mid volume | Up to 60 hours; Sennheiser comparison claim |
| Battery | Exchangeable 700 mAh lithium-ion cell; Sennheiser says users can replace it | Built-in battery |
| 10-minute charge claim | Up to seven hours on the specification page; a separate support FAQ gives approximately 10 hours with ANC on | Up to six hours, according to Sennheiser’s comparison |
| Dolby Atmos | Supported | Not listed in Sennheiser’s comparison table |
| Drivers | 42 mm dynamic; Sennheiser says the transducer hardware is unchanged from MOMENTUM 4 | 42 mm dynamic, according to Sennheiser’s description of unchanged hardware |
These are manufacturer specifications and comparison claims, not independent head-to-head test results. Choose based on the practical difference that matters to you: the MOMENTUM 5’s replaceable battery and newer listed features, or the MOMENTUM 4’s slightly higher stated ANC-on runtime.
Is the MOMENTUM 5 worth its price?
Published prices provide dated context, not a live quote: TechCrunch listed $399.99 and Amazon and Sennheiser as retailers in its September 27, 2026 review. SoundGuys lists $399.95 as the original price. Check the current price, stock, and exact model listing before buying.
The case for paying a premium is strongest if you value customizable sound, long intervals between charges, and a battery Sennheiser says you can replace. It is less compelling if your first priorities are the lightest fit, the strongest possible ANC, or a known supply of replacement batteries in your market. SoundGuys rated the headphones 8.6; that is its review score, not an objective measure of value or a guarantee that the fit and tuning will work for you.
Who should consider it?
- Listeners who want a customizable sound and are willing to tune the default presentation to taste.
- People who prioritize long rated battery life and the option to replace the battery.
- Buyers who have checked comfort and are satisfied with useful, rather than uniformly top-tier, noise cancellation.
Who should compare alternatives first?
- Anyone sensitive to headphone weight or looking for especially comfortable long-session wear.
- Frequent flyers or commuters for whom maximum suppression of engine noise, traffic, or voices is the deciding factor.
- Buyers who require an IP rating or need confirmed local availability of a replacement battery.
Verdict
The MOMENTUM 5 Wireless is a strong premium option for sound-focused listeners who also want long battery life and a user-replaceable cell. Its compromises are concrete: roughly 290 g of weight, ANC that reviewers found less than class-leading, and sound that may call for app-based tuning. Weigh those against your own comfort and noise-cancellation needs, and check current pricing and replacement-part availability before you commit.
