Choose the Sony WH-1000XM5 if your first priority is the strongest active noise cancellation. Choose the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 if you want dramatically longer rated battery life, aptX Adaptive support, and a sound-and-value balance that comparative reviewers prefer. Neither model wins every category, so the right choice depends on what you do most with your headphones.
The headline battery claim is real on paper: Sennheiser rates the MOMENTUM 4 for up to 60 hours with ANC enabled, while Sony rates the WH-1000XM5 for a maximum of 30 hours with noise canceling on. Those are manufacturer figures measured under different stated conditions, not a guarantee of identical real-world use.

Which has better noise cancellation?
The WH-1000XM5 is the clear choice when maximum noise reduction matters most. SoundGuys, RTINGS and TechRadar all describe Sony’s noise blocking as stronger than the MOMENTUM 4’s. That agreement across three independent comparisons is more useful than relying on a single listening impression.

What Sony’s advantage means in practice
For an airplane cabin, train carriage, busy office or other steady low-frequency environment, stronger ANC can reduce the amount of external sound competing with your music or podcast. You may be able to listen at a lower volume, which can make long sessions less fatiguing. The advantage is about how much outside sound is attenuated; it does not mean every voice, sudden sound or high-frequency noise disappears.
Where the Momentum 4 still makes sense
Sennheiser specifies hybrid adaptive ANC, so the MOMENTUM 4 is still an active-noise-canceling headphone rather than a passive-only alternative. The cited comparison characterizes its ANC as middling, not unusable. If you mainly need relief from air-conditioning, engine rumble or general background noise and place a higher value on endurance and sound, its weaker cancellation may be an acceptable trade.
Why published ANC results should not be treated as a personal guarantee
Noise cancellation depends on the seal around your ears, the shape of your head, glasses, hair and the exact noise in the room. A headphone that measures better for one listener can feel less effective if its pads do not seal well. Sony’s lead is the safer bet for a buyer who cannot tolerate background noise, but try to evaluate the fit if your use involves long travel or an unusually noisy workplace.
Is the MOMENTUM 4 battery really twice as long?
On the manufacturers’ ANC-on Bluetooth ratings, yes. Sennheiser states “Up to 60 hrs music playtime via Bluetooth and with ANC (test condition: iPhone, mid volume level),” while Sony states “Max 30 hrs (NC ON), Max 40 hrs (NC OFF).” Sixty is exactly twice thirty.
How to interpret the two ratings
- MOMENTUM 4: up to 60 hours with ANC enabled, measured by Sennheiser with an iPhone at a mid volume level.
- WH-1000XM5: a maximum of 30 hours with noise canceling enabled and a maximum of 40 hours with it disabled, according to Sony’s specification.
- Real use varies: volume, call time, wireless conditions, codec activity and other operating behavior can reduce playback time from either headline figure.
The comparison is therefore valid as a rated endurance advantage, not as a promise that every owner will obtain two full times as many hours. Sennheiser’s quoted test condition is explicit; Sony’s quoted maximum does not state the same test details in the supplied specification. Treat both numbers as ceilings under manufacturer-defined conditions.
Who benefits most from the longer rating?
Frequent travelers, commuters who dislike charging, and people who use headphones throughout a workday have the most to gain. Longer endurance also gives you more margin when you forget to charge before a trip. If you normally recharge every night and spend most of your time near a power source, battery capacity may matter less than Sony’s stronger isolation.
Bluetooth codecs: aptX Adaptive versus LDAC
Both headphones use Bluetooth 5.2 and support the baseline SBC and AAC codecs. Their differentiating options are Sennheiser’s aptX and aptX Adaptive versus Sony’s LDAC.

What aptX Adaptive adds to the MOMENTUM 4
aptX Adaptive is designed to adjust its operating behavior to the connection and content demands. Its presence gives compatible source devices an additional codec option beyond SBC and AAC. Sennheiser lists aptX Adaptive as a supported codec; the headphone does not automatically make every phone or computer support it.
What LDAC adds to the WH-1000XM5
LDAC is Sony’s listed higher-bandwidth codec option. A compatible source device and the appropriate Bluetooth settings are required before it can be used. If your phone, tablet or computer does not offer LDAC, the XM5 will use one of its other supported codecs instead.
Codec choice should follow your devices
Codec support is useful only when the complete chain supports it: source hardware, operating system, application behavior and the headphone connection. Check the codec options on the devices you actually use rather than choosing from the logo alone. For many listeners, the difference between these codec lists will be less important than ANC performance, fit and battery habits.
Which sounds better?
The supplied comparison evidence favors the MOMENTUM 4 for sound and value, while describing its ANC as middling. That is a value judgment from SoundGuys, not a universal measurement that makes the Sennheiser preferable to every listener. Tonal preference, music genre, recording quality and source settings all affect what “better” means.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen the Sennheiser sound/value case is persuasive
If you listen for hours at a time and want the purchase to emphasize musical enjoyment and endurance, the MOMENTUM 4 combines the cited sound advantage with the longer rated ANC-on battery life. That combination can be compelling even when its noise blocking is not class-leading.
When Sony’s feature priority is more useful
If your listening happens mainly in places where external noise is the problem, Sony’s stronger ANC may improve the experience more than a preference for the Sennheiser’s reported sound/value balance. A quieter signal path can matter more than small tonal differences when you are on a plane, beside traffic or in a crowded office.
There is no supplied standardized frequency-response comparison that would justify declaring one model objectively superior for every genre. Treat the sound conclusion as a priority decision, not a laboratory universal.

Comfort and fit: why there is no automatic winner
Neither product can be awarded a definitive comfort victory from the available evidence. The comparison found no standardized head-to-head comfort measurement, and comfort is strongly fit-dependent.
Fit checks that matter before you buy
- Wear the headphones long enough to reveal pressure on your headband, jaw or the top of your ears.
- Check whether your glasses or hairstyle breaks the ear-pad seal; a poor seal can also reduce perceived ANC.
- Move your head, look down and walk around to see whether the ear cups stay positioned.
- Consider your normal session length. A fit that feels fine for 20 minutes may become uncomfortable after a full workday.
Because the available evidence does not establish a winner, return policies and an opportunity to try the fit are more valuable than a generic comfort ranking.
Price and value: how to read the numbers
SoundGuys listed 2025 manufacturer suggested retail prices of $449.95 for the MOMENTUM 4 and $399.99 for the WH-1000XM5. That snapshot puts the Sennheiser at a higher historical MSRP, even though the cited review favors it for sound and value. It does not establish what either model costs today.
Use current transaction price, not an old MSRP, for the final decision
- Check the current price from the retailer you intend to use.
- Confirm that the listing is for the exact model and a new unit, not a refurbished or region-specific package.
- Compare the return period and warranty terms alongside the headline price.
- Recalculate the trade-off if a sale changes the gap substantially; a lower price can make Sony’s ANC advantage easier to justify, while a discounted Sennheiser can strengthen its endurance/value case.
Prices are volatile, so an article-era MSRP should not be treated as a recommendation to pay a particular amount.
Choose by the way you will use them
Choose the Sony WH-1000XM5 when:
- Maximum active noise cancellation is your non-negotiable requirement.
- You fly, commute or work in consistently noisy environments.
- You would rather have stronger isolation than the longest possible battery rating.
- Your source devices support LDAC and that codec is part of your buying rationale.
Choose the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 when:
- You want the longest manufacturer-rated Bluetooth playback with ANC.
- You value the option of aptX Adaptive on compatible source devices.
- You place sound and value ahead of class-leading noise blocking.
- You spend long periods away from chargers or routinely forget to recharge.
Consider the trade-off carefully when:
- You need both the strongest ANC and the longest endurance. The two priorities point to different models, so decide which limitation would annoy you more.
- You are buying primarily for comfort. Neither product has a standardized head-to-head comfort result in the available evidence; fit testing should decide.
- You are choosing on price alone. Current retailer pricing may differ materially from the historical MSRP figures.
A practical decision process
- Rank your first priority. Select noise blocking, battery endurance, sound/value or codec compatibility as the factor that would be hardest to compromise.
- Identify your loudest regular environment. If it is an aircraft, train or busy office, give Sony’s documented ANC lead more weight. If it is a quiet home or ordinary commute, endurance and sound may dominate.
- Check your source devices. Confirm whether your phone, tablet and computer expose aptX Adaptive or LDAC before paying for a codec feature you cannot use.
- Estimate your charging pattern. Someone who uses headphones for many hours between outlets gains more from Sennheiser’s endurance rating than someone who charges nightly.
- Try the fit when possible. Seal, pressure and stability affect both comfort and perceived ANC.
- Check the live price and return terms. Use the current transaction price rather than the 2025 MSRP snapshot, and keep a return option if fit is uncertain.
Strengths and limitations at a glance
Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4
- Strengths: up to 60 hours of Bluetooth playback with ANC under Sennheiser’s stated test condition; aptX Adaptive support; comparative praise for sound and value.
- Limitations: ANC is described as middling and weaker than Sony’s by the cited comparisons; the 60-hour figure is a manufacturer maximum, not a universal result.
Sony WH-1000XM5
- Strengths: stronger noise blocking in comparisons from SoundGuys, RTINGS and TechRadar; LDAC support; up to 30 hours with noise canceling on and up to 40 hours with it off according to Sony.
- Limitations: its ANC-on battery rating is half the MOMENTUM 4’s stated figure; the codec advantage is useful only with compatible source hardware; comfort remains fit-dependent.
Final recommendation by priority
Buy the Sony WH-1000XM5 when blocking outside sound is the deciding factor. The available comparative evidence consistently places its ANC ahead.
