Timm Schulze-Melander, technology hardware and semiconductor research head at Rothschild & Co Redburn, says the AI semiconductor industry is undergoing a “powerful platform change” that has remained resilient despite rising interest rates and supply-demand constraints. The assessment is qualitative, not a guarantee that every chip company or AI project will withstand higher financing costs.
What “resilient” means in the current AI chip trade
AllMind’s October 15, 2026 summary reported Schulze-Melander’s view that the semiconductor industry’s platform shift has held up while monetary conditions have tightened. Chip Dispatch, also writing on October 15, characterized the AI trade as “remarkably resilient” because demand for AI infrastructure has continued through conditions that normally pressure long-duration growth assets.

That distinction matters. The claim concerns the durability of AI-related demand and investment, not a promise of uninterrupted share-price gains, uniform industry growth or permanent pricing power. A company can receive strong orders while its valuation multiple contracts if bond yields rise or investors demand a higher return for taking risk.
Why higher rates are a test for AI infrastructure
AI infrastructure is exposed to interest rates in two different ways. First, higher rates reduce the present value investors assign to cash flows expected years in the future. That can pressure valuations even when current sales are increasing. Second, building data-center capacity, networking systems and semiconductor manufacturing requires substantial capital. More expensive financing can force customers to delay projects or demand faster payback.
#1 Best Overall
So far, the reported resilience suggests that at least some customers continue to prioritize AI capacity despite those pressures. If that demand remains broad and converts into revenue, advanced-node foundries, AI-accelerator suppliers and high-bandwidth-memory vendors could retain order visibility and negotiating leverage. Those supply-chain effects are analytical implications of the reported demand strength; the October 15 coverage did not publish a quantified test of them.
How to distinguish a durable trend from a narrow spending cycle
Investors and industry observers can evaluate the claim across five separate dimensions rather than treating “AI demand” as one measurement.
Rank #2
| Question | What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Demand breadth | Spending across multiple customers and AI infrastructure categories, rather than one hyperscaler or accelerator program | A narrow customer group can create a strong headline while leaving the wider supply chain vulnerable |
| Operating confirmation | Earnings revisions, backlog conversion, order trends, lead times and customer capital-expenditure commentary | Orders that convert into shipments and revenue provide stronger evidence than announced intentions |
| Macro sensitivity | Real yields, policy rates and customers’ cost of capital | Higher financing costs can eventually reprice projects even when near-term demand is firm |
| Supply-chain exposure | Separate conditions for foundries, memory, accelerators, equipment and adjacent hardware | Different bottlenecks and customer mixes mean the trade is not equally attractive across components |
| Valuation versus fundamentals | Share-price multiples alongside orders, margins and earnings expectations | Resilient operations can coexist with falling valuations when yields rise |
Why the semiconductor segment may outperform adjacent hardware
Natixis commentary has argued that the semiconductor portion of the AI trade may be holding up better than adjacent hardware and other related areas, even while policy rates and yields remain headwinds. That view implies a selective market rather than a blanket endorsement of every AI-linked business.
Morgan Stanley commentary has described semiconductor stocks fading as investors reassess hyperscaler spending and earnings revisions. Taken together, these observations support monitoring the thesis rather than treating it as a sector-wide guarantee: enthusiasm can persist in core chips while expectations weaken elsewhere in the hardware chain.

What could invalidate the resilience thesis
Schulze-Melander’s wording includes an important qualifier: the platform change has remained resilient “so far.” The thesis would be weakened by several observable developments:
- Semiconductor earnings revisions turning persistently negative.
- Backlogs failing to convert into recognized revenue.
- Hyperscalers reducing, delaying or cancelling planned capital expenditure.
- Orders and lead times deteriorating across key suppliers.
- A sharp rise in real yields that increases customers’ cost of capital.
- Trade-policy restrictions disrupting access to advanced manufacturing, memory or accelerator supply.
Even if none of those events occurs, a company-specific warning can still matter. A resilient platform narrative does not establish durable pricing power for every semiconductor manufacturer, equipment maker or memory supplier.

Chip Dispatch cautioned that resilience is not immunity. If rates stay high for an extended period, AI infrastructure budgets can eventually be repriced. Customers may approve only projects with clearer returns, stretch deployment schedules or concentrate spending on the highest-performing systems. Suppliers could then see a divergence between booked demand, delivered units and future orders.

The evidence behind the headline
The October 15, 2026 reporting provides an attributed qualitative interview statement and contextual market commentary, but no named demand-growth rate, capital-expenditure total, valuation multiple or interest-rate figure. The strongest defensible conclusion is therefore conditional: AI semiconductor demand has shown notable resistance to higher rates up to the date of the comments, while the durability and breadth of that resistance remain open questions.
