Self-driving cars are not automatically dirtier or cleaner. Their environmental impact depends on electricity for propulsion and onboard computers, manufacturing, vehicle miles (including empty repositioning), occupancy, the trips they replace, and the pollution being measured. The “dirty secret” is that a vehicle can become more efficient per mile while the wider transport system consumes more energy and produces more emissions.
First, separate the kinds of “self-driving” technology
Claims about autonomous vehicles often mix systems that have very different environmental implications.

Driver-assistance features
Today’s lane centering, adaptive cruise control and automated parking still require a human driver. They add sensors and computing, but they are not a driverless transport service. Their effect depends mainly on whether they change driving speed, congestion, vehicle choice or trip frequency.
Level 4 driverless services
Level 4 vehicles can operate without a human driver inside a defined service area and under defined conditions. These are the robotaxis now operating commercially. The International Energy Agency (IEA), in its 20 May 2026 overview, says commercial Level 4 electric driverless taxis operate in more than 20 cities worldwide, and that the commercial robotaxi services currently in operation use EVs.

Hypothetical Level 5 fleets
Level 5 would mean unrestricted automation in all roads and conditions. The IEA says cars at this level are “not currently in sight.” Most dramatic forecasts about global autonomous fleets therefore describe a future scenario, not an observed fleet.
The hidden electricity bill: computers inside every vehicle
An autonomous vehicle’s sensors, processors and software consume electricity while the car is operating. That energy reduces driving range, requires a larger battery or more frequent charging, and can create substantial emissions when multiplied across millions or billions of vehicles.
MIT researchers modeled this issue for a global fleet of fully autonomous electric vehicles. MIT News reported their results on 13 January 2023:

The comparison with data centers is easy to misread. It does not predict that autonomous cars will definitely equal all data-center emissions. The calculation changes with fleet size, driving hours, computer power and the carbon intensity of electricity. The reported model also counted operational computing, not vehicle manufacturing or sensor production, and the researchers identified uncertainty in future driving hours and workloads.

“The energy consumption of an autonomous vehicle is really critical, not just for extending the battery life, but also for sustainability,” MIT associate professor Vivienne Sze told MIT News.
Efficiency can be overwhelmed by more driving
Automation may make each trip smoother or allow a smaller, more efficient vehicle, but it can also make travel cheaper and more convenient. People may take trips they would otherwise skip, send empty vehicles to reposition or avoid parking, and use autonomous cars instead of buses, trains, walking or cycling.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) summarized the uncertainty in its AEO2018 analysis. Estimates in the literature ranged from roughly 60% less to 200% more U.S. light-duty-vehicle energy use, depending on assumptions about vehicle miles and efficiency.

In both cases, better vehicle efficiency partly offset the additional travel. The results combine assumptions about household and fleet adoption, powertrain, annual use and effects on transit, so they should not be treated as a forecast of actual 2050 emissions.
Why shared electric vehicles could still help
The opposite outcome is also plausible. If automation supports high-occupancy services, reduces empty travel, uses smaller vehicles matched to each trip and runs on cleaner electricity, emissions per passenger-mile can fall.
Greenblatt and Saxena’s 2015 Nature Climate Change analysis estimated that U.S. autonomous taxis could have 87%–94% lower per-mile greenhouse-gas emissions in 2030 than current conventional vehicles under its combined assumptions. The modeled pathway included cleaner electricity, trip-sized vehicles and high annual mileage that improved the economics of efficient vehicles.

A 2018 review in Environmental Science & Technology makes the broader point: connected and automated vehicles can change outcomes at the vehicle, transport-system, urban and societal levels. Looking only at the efficiency of the car itself can produce an overly optimistic answer.
Climate emissions are not the only pollution measure
Greenhouse gases, total energy use and local particles answer different questions. An autonomous fleet could reduce one and increase another.
A 2021 modeled study of Metro Vancouver scenarios found greenhouse-gas emissions 6%–20% lower than its no-CAV conditions, depending on the scenario. In some of those 2040 scenarios, increased vehicle travel was associated with brake-wear PM2.5 emissions up to 30% higher. These were regional model results, not measurements of a universal autonomous-vehicle effect. Brake and tire particles also depend on vehicle mass, traffic patterns, braking behavior, road surfaces and fleet composition.

How to judge an environmental claim about autonomous cars
Two percentages cannot be compared fairly unless they use the same boundaries and assumptions. Check these variables before accepting a headline:

- Life-cycle boundary: Does the estimate include electricity, fuel, vehicle manufacturing, batteries, sensors and replacement hardware, or only driving?
- Powertrain and grid: Is the vehicle electric, hybrid or combustion-powered? How carbon-intensive is the electricity where it operates?
- Computing load: What processor power, sensor package and operating hours are assumed?
- Travel: Are extra personal trips and empty repositioning miles included?
- Occupancy and sharing: Is the vehicle privately owned, shared by several passengers or dispatched as a single-occupant taxi?
- Displaced modes: Does automation replace a conventional car, a bus or train, or no trip at all?
- Pollutant: Is the result about greenhouse gases, energy, fuel use, brake-wear particles or another measure?
- Scope and date: Which country or city, electricity mix, vehicle fleet and year does the model represent?
The studies cited above use different geographies, dates, system boundaries and scenario designs. Their headline percentages are not a controlled head-to-head comparison.
What is established today—and what is still hypothetical
Commercial driverless services are currently limited-domain Level 4 operations, and the IEA says the services operating today use electric vehicles. That tells us the present market is not a fleet of unrestricted autonomous personal cars.
The more consequential environmental question is what happens if automation becomes widespread: whether cars run many more hours, whether they travel empty, whether they take riders from public transport, how quickly computers become more efficient, and how clean the electricity supply becomes. Those system choices can outweigh the efficiency of any individual vehicle.

The bottom line
The defensible “dirty secret” is an accounting problem. A self-driving car’s tailpipe—or lack of one—does not capture the energy used by its computers, the emissions embodied in its hardware, or the extra travel automation may induce. Electrification, efficient computing and shared use can produce large benefits; convenience-driven growth in vehicle miles can erase them. Any honest answer must state the scenario, boundary, geography, year and pollutant instead of declaring all self-driving cars clean or dirty.
