But the strongest quantified evidence available is for specific driver-assistance features—not fully self-driving cars—and those features still require an attentive human driver.
What counts as self-driving—and what is available now?
Many cars have features such as automatic emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control, or lane-keeping assistance. These systems can warn or intervene in defined situations, but they support a human driver; they do not make the car self-driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that even the highest level of driving automation available to consumers requires drivers’ full engagement and undivided attention. NHTSA’s automated-vehicle guidance distinguishes these driver-assistance features from automated driving systems (ADS) designed to perform the driving task.

As of 2026, NHTSA says fully automated vehicles are not available for consumer purchase in the United States. Automated systems are being tested and used in limited locations and conditions, but that is different from being able to buy a car that drives itself or use an automated service everywhere.

A limited deployment is not general consumer availability
On July 30, 2026, NHTSA announced a temporary exemption allowing Zoox to deploy up to 2,500 robotaxis annually for two years under an oversight structure. The announcement also addressed work on performance standards and updated deployment guidance. This is a specific regulatory and commercial action, not evidence that consumers can buy fully automated cars or access robotaxis nationwide. NHTSA’s July 30, 2026 announcement describes the exemption.

How could self-driving technology improve safety?
The central potential benefit is preventing crashes or reducing their severity. Driver-assistance systems can warn a driver or intervene in particular situations; more capable automation could take on a larger share of the driving task. NHTSA identifies fewer crashes, injuries, and deaths as possible outcomes of automated-vehicle technology, while also describing those outcomes as potential rather than guaranteed. No system eliminates risk, and results depend on what the system can do and the conditions in which it operates.
Automation could also reduce exposure to some human errors that contribute to crashes. That is a rationale for developing the technology, not proof that software is error-free or that all automated vehicles are safer in every setting. For context, NHTSA’s automated-vehicle page reports 39,254 people killed in U.S. motor vehicle crashes in 2024. That figure describes the broader road-safety problem; it does not measure the effectiveness of automated vehicles.

What crash reductions have been measured for current driver-assistance features?
The clearest quantified evidence in the available findings concerns particular forms of AEB. In January 2025, NHTSA’s Partnership for Analytics Research in Traffic Safety (PARTS) reported results from an analysis spanning approximately 98 million vehicles, 168 models from model years 2015–2023, and more than 21.1 million police-reported crashes supplied by NHTSA; MITRE linked and analyzed the data. NHTSA’s PARTS page reports the study findings.

These findings are evidence for the studied driver-assistance features, crash categories, participating automakers, and reported data. They do not show that fully automated cars reduce crashes by the same percentages. NHTSA’s initial Standing General Order crash-data release also warns that early reports were not normalized by vehicles deployed or miles traveled, so raw manufacturer crash counts cannot be used to compare safety rates. NHTSA noted that the initial data were not comprehensive and relied on inputs such as telematics, complaints, and field reports.

Who might benefit from greater mobility?
NHTSA says partial and full automation could offer additional mobility options to some older adults and people with disabilities who cannot drive. If a suitable system or service is available where they live and meets their needs, it could help connect them to work, education, training, services, and other opportunities. This is a prospective benefit, not a promise for every person: usefulness depends on the individual, the system’s capabilities, its operating area, and how it is deployed. NHTSA’s automated-vehicle safety page discusses these potential mobility benefits.
Can these systems help protect pedestrians and cyclists?
Active safety features can help protect people outside a vehicle as well as its occupants. AEB may detect a hazard and brake in certain situations, and NHTSA identifies bicyclists and pedestrians among the road users such systems may help protect. The PARTS pedestrian-AEB finding is narrower: it concerns single-vehicle frontal crashes involving non-motorists, not every collision involving a pedestrian or cyclist. It should not be treated as a general measure of protection from automated vehicles.

What should you look for in a car today?
Evaluate the actual safety features and ratings of the particular vehicle rather than relying on a “self-driving” label. Adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and similar systems provide driver support; they do not remove the driver’s responsibility to pay attention. NHTSA directs shoppers to its 5-Star Safety Ratings when comparing vehicles.

- Check which driver-assistance features the specific vehicle includes and what functions they perform.
- Keep the distinction clear: assistance features operate within defined functions while a human remains responsible; they are not proof of full automation.
- Follow the vehicle’s instructions and remain engaged and attentive whenever the system requires it.
