Selenium lets Python control a real browser: install the Python package, start a local browser with WebDriver, navigate to a page, find elements, and wait for the page state your next action requires. For a first local script, you do not need a Java server; Selenium Manager usually handles the browser driver when one is missing.
What Selenium with Python does
Selenium is the browser automation interface, Python is the language used to call it, and WebDriver connects Selenium commands to a browser. You can use that combination for browser-based tests, repetitive UI tasks, and checking how a web application behaves through its interface.
A typical script opens a browser, navigates to a URL, interacts with page elements, checks a result, and closes the browser. Selenium automates the browser; it does not replace a test framework such as unittest or pytest, which can organize tests and assertions.
Install Selenium and prepare a Python project
The Selenium Python bindings require Python 3.10 or later. The project recommends using an isolated virtual environment so this project’s dependencies do not affect other Python projects. The official installation command is python -m pip install -U selenium. See the Selenium Python API documentation for current requirements and installation details.

Create and activate a virtual environment in your project directory. For example, on macOS or Linux:
python3 -m venv .venv source .venv/bin/activateOn Windows PowerShell, use:
py -m venv .venv .venvScriptsActivate.ps1 -
Install or update Selenium:
python -m pip install -U selenium -
Save your script as a Python file, such as
basic_browser.py, and run it with the same Python environment where Selenium was installed.
Local browser startup does not require a separate Java server. Selenium Manager, included with current Selenium releases, can detect a browser and obtain a matching driver when one is not already available. Its setup behavior and platform caveats are documented in Selenium Manager.
Launch a browser and close it cleanly
This minimal script opens Chrome, loads a page, prints its title, and closes the browser even if an error occurs after startup:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesfrom selenium import webdriver
driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
driver.get("https://example.com")
print(driver.title)
finally:
driver.quit()
webdriver.Chrome() starts a local Chrome session, and driver.get(...) navigates to the supplied URL. The finally block is a cleanup pattern: driver.quit() ends the browser session and releases its resources. The Selenium Python API documents this startup and navigation pattern at selenium.dev.

Selenium Manager normally handles the driver setup if a suitable driver is not already provided. It resolves a matching driver using browser and vendor information and caches downloads. In controlled environments, you can instead provide a browser and driver through your own setup.
Find the element you intend to use
A locator tells Selenium how to identify a page element. Choose one that matches the page structure and identifies the intended element unambiguously. An ID or name can be direct when the page provides a suitable value; CSS selectors and XPath are also available. No locator strategy is universally best.
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
search_box = driver.find_element(By.NAME, "q")
search_box.send_keys("Selenium with Python")
find_element returns a single matching element; find_elements returns a collection of matches, which may be empty. For example:
Recommended Free Tools
links = driver.find_elements(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "a")
for link in links:
print(link.text)
Common strategies include By.ID, By.NAME, By.CSS_SELECTOR, and By.XPATH. Review Selenium’s examples and strategy names in the locator strategies documentation. If a locator matches the wrong element or multiple elements, refine it against the page’s actual structure rather than assuming a different strategy will always solve the problem.
Wait for dynamic pages with explicit conditions
A page may continue rendering or updating after navigation. An explicit wait polls for the specific condition needed by the next action and stops when it becomes true or the timeout is reached. This is more targeted than pausing for an arbitrary fixed duration.

from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
wait = WebDriverWait(driver, 10)
submit_button = wait.until(
EC.element_to_be_clickable((By.ID, "submit"))
)
submit_button.click()
Here, 10 seconds is the maximum time the wait will poll before timing out; it is not a promise that the page takes 10 seconds to load. Select a condition that reflects what the next step needs, such as an element becoming visible or clickable. Selenium’s waiting strategies documentation warns that mixing implicit and explicit waits can lead to unpredictable timeout behavior. Prefer a consistent explicit-wait approach for condition-specific synchronization.
Choose local or remote browser execution
Local browser
A local session runs a browser on the machine executing the Python script. It is the simplest starting point, and the Selenium Python API states that the Java server is not needed for local Selenium scripts.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Remote WebDriver and Selenium Grid
A remote session runs a browser through a Selenium Grid or another Remote WebDriver endpoint. This is useful when browser execution is managed separately from the test process. Grid is not a prerequisite for local practice; consult the Python API documentation for the Grid note and remote-session context.
Browser support and driver setup caveats
The current Selenium Python API lists Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, WebKitGTK, WPEWebKit, and Remote protocol support. That list describes API support; it is not a promise that Selenium Manager automatically downloads every listed browser.
Selenium Manager’s automatic browser-download behavior covers Chrome, Firefox, and Edge under its supported configurations. Its documentation notes platform caveats: managing Edge installation on Windows requires administrator permissions, and Linux-managed browsers may encounter missing system libraries. Check the Selenium Manager documentation for browser version controls and current setup details.

Use Selenium for browser automation—or capture a screenshot directly
Selenium is appropriate when you need to interact with a browser, inspect UI behavior, or run browser-based tests. If your goal is to obtain a webpage screenshot rather than automate a browser workflow, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server for developers.
Or skip the browser setup:
Make one GET request with a URL to receive a screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Reliability, runtime, and cost considerations
Explicit waits make scripts respond to observed page conditions rather than an assumed fixed delay; the timeout is an upper bound for that wait, not a page-speed measurement. Selenium Manager can reduce manual driver setup, but its downloads and browser startup remain subject to browser availability, platform requirements, and environment permissions.
Selenium itself is installed as a Python package. Local automation uses the browser and driver setup on the executing machine; remote execution adds a Grid or Remote WebDriver endpoint to manage. No performance or reliability figures are implied here because they depend on the browser, application, machine, network, and test design.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Java to use Selenium with Python?
No. A Java server is not needed for local Selenium scripts. Remote execution is a separate setup using Remote WebDriver and Selenium Grid.
Which Python version does Selenium require?
The current Selenium Python API documentation lists Python 3.10 or later.
Should I use ChromeDriver manually?
Not as the default first step: Selenium Manager in current Selenium releases usually handles a missing driver for supported browser setups. Controlled environments can provide their own browser and driver.
