To get started, install a Selenium language binding, have a supported browser available, and run a short script that creates a session, navigates to a page, and then closes the session with quit. Modern Selenium bindings use Selenium Manager to handle much of the browser-driver setup automatically, though custom or restricted environments may still need explicit configuration.
What is Selenium WebDriver?
Selenium WebDriver is an interface for controlling browsers from code. It is not a browser or a programming language: Selenium provides language bindings, and a browser-specific driver carries out commands. The W3C describes WebDriver as a remote-control interface for user agents; its WebDriver 2 document published on 2 July 2026 is a Working Draft, so that document is still subject to change. Read the W3C WebDriver specification.
You can run a browser locally while learning, or connect WebDriver to remote Selenium infrastructure. The same basic lifecycle applies: create a driver session, navigate, locate and use or inspect elements, and call quit to release the session. Selenium’s WebDriver guide covers browser support, waits, elements, interactions, and troubleshooting.
What do you need to install?
- A language binding: the Selenium package for the language you will write in.
- A browser: for example, Chrome for the Python example below.
- A browser driver: the browser-specific implementation WebDriver uses to communicate with the browser. Selenium Manager, included with current Selenium bindings and used by default, automates much of this setup.
For ordinary recent setups, you usually do not need to download a driver executable and set its path by hand. That is not a guarantee for every environment: locked-down networks, remote sessions, custom browser installations, and pinned browser versions can require additional configuration. ChromeDriver remains a separate executable maintained by the Chromium team with WebDriver contributors; see Chrome for Developers’ ChromeDriver guide.

Follow Selenium’s Getting started instructions for your chosen language. The package and runtime requirements are binding-specific. For example, Selenium’s JavaScript API page currently specifies Node.js >= 22; do not assume that requirement applies to Python or other bindings. Check the JavaScript API documentation for current details.
How do I write my first Selenium script?
This Python example creates a Chrome session, opens Selenium’s example page, finds an element by ID, clicks it, and closes the browser even if an earlier step raises an error. Install the binding with python -m pip install selenium, make sure Chrome is available, and save the script as first_selenium.py.

What each part does
webdriver.Chrome()starts a Chrome WebDriver session. Selenium Manager may resolve the compatible driver automatically.driver.get(...)navigates the browser to the supplied URL.find_elementlocates a page element. This example uses a name, a CSS selector, and an ID.send_keystypes into the text box;clickactivates the button.finallyensuresdriver.quit()runs to end the session and release browser resources.
Use locators that reflect the page’s structure and remain stable where possible. If the page’s markup changes, an ID or selector can stop matching; inspect the current page and update the locator rather than assuming Selenium itself is broken.
How do I wait for an element?
A page navigation completing does not necessarily mean every asynchronous interface element is ready. Wait for the condition your next step needs—for example, that a particular element is present or clickable—instead of making a fixed sleep the default. A fixed delay can waste time when the page is ready early and still be too short when it is slow.
Wait APIs and exact syntax vary by language binding. Consult the wait section of the official WebDriver guide and the API documentation for your binding before copying a wait example. Keep the condition specific to the next action, and handle a timeout as evidence that the expected page state did not arrive within the configured limit.

Do I still need to download ChromeDriver?
Usually not for a straightforward local setup with a current Selenium binding: Selenium Manager can automate browser-driver management. You may still need to configure a driver explicitly if your environment blocks automatic downloads, requires a particular browser-driver pairing, uses a custom browser location, or runs the browser remotely. For ChromeDriver’s role and setup, use the ChromeDriver guide and your binding’s current Selenium documentation.
Which browser and execution setup should a beginner choose?
Local browser session
Start locally with a browser installed on your machine. It is the simplest way to see what each command does and to debug a first script. A local session is not a prerequisite for Selenium as a whole, but it avoids introducing remote infrastructure while learning the API.

Remote WebDriver connects a script to a browser running elsewhere. Selenium Grid is the project’s option for distributing browser runs across multiple machines, including parallel execution. Treat Grid as a later scaling step, not something you need to install just to run the first local script. See the Selenium project documentation and WebDriver guide.

Classic WebDriver is centered on commands and responses, such as navigating, finding an element, or clicking it. Selenium’s documentation also describes WebDriver BiDi, a bidirectional protocol developed with browser vendors that adds a WebSocket connection for streaming and responding to browser events, including network requests, console messages, and JavaScript errors.
BiDi is an advanced capability, not a requirement for a first session. The documentation presents it as a cross-browser replacement for Chrome DevTools Protocol, but support can differ by browser and binding; check the current support details for the combination you intend to use rather than assuming every capability works identically everywhere. How to move beyond the first script
- Replace the example page and locators with a small task on the site you need to automate.
- Add explicit synchronization around asynchronous elements and verify outcomes with assertions or checks appropriate to your test.
- Use a remote session or Grid only when you have a concrete need to run browsers elsewhere or distribute runs.
- Explore WebDriver BiDi only if you need browser events such as network or console activity and have confirmed support for your browser and binding.
