Use an explicit wait for a specific browser condition, such as an element becoming visible or a page title changing. An implicit wait applies a timeout to element lookups across the WebDriver session. In Java, a FluentWait lets you tune polling and ignored exceptions; Python’s WebDriverWait offers corresponding options. Do not combine implicit and explicit waits: Selenium warns that their timing can become unpredictable.
Which Selenium wait should you use?
| Wait | Scope | What it waits for | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Implicit | Element-location calls across the WebDriver session | An element can be found | You deliberately want a global delay for lookups, not a particular page state |
| Explicit | A condition at a specific point in the test | A defined condition, such as visibility, staleness, text, or title content | The test must wait for a dynamic state before continuing |
| FluentWait | A configured wait and its condition; Java API | A condition checked at a configurable polling interval, with chosen exceptions ignored | You need to control polling or ignored exceptions |
In Python, WebDriverWait is the explicit-wait class and also accepts polling and ignored-exception options. Selenium documents its default poll interval as 0.5 seconds and its default ignored exception as NoSuchElementException in the Python 4.50.0 API documentation.
How an implicit wait works
An implicit wait sets a session-wide timeout for element-location operations. If the requested element is found, the lookup returns and the test continues; otherwise, the lookup can wait up to the configured timeout. Selenium documents the default as zero.
Python
driver.implicitly_wait(2)
Java
driver.manage().timeouts().implicitlyWait(Duration.ofSeconds(2));
These examples set a two-second implicit wait. Use this approach only when a global lookup delay is actually intended. An implicit wait does not express whether an element is visible, clickable, or displaying particular text; use an explicit condition for those requirements.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to use an explicit wait
An explicit wait repeatedly evaluates a condition and proceeds when that condition succeeds. If it does not become true before the timeout, the wait times out. This makes explicit waits useful for pages where elements or states appear after navigation, rendering, or other browser activity.
Wait for an element to become visible in Python
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.support.wait import WebDriverWait
wait = WebDriverWait(driver, timeout=10)
element = wait.until(EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.ID, "revealed")))
element.send_keys("Displayed")
The 10-second timeout is an illustrative choice, not an official Selenium recommendation. The condition locates the element by ID and waits for it to be visible before sending text.

Wait for a custom condition in Python
wait.until(lambda driver: driver.find_element(By.ID, "status").text == "Ready")
The callable supplied to until should return a truthy value once the required state is reached. In the Python API, until returns the successful call’s value; if it does not receive a truthy result before the timeout, it raises TimeoutException.
Choose a condition that matches the test
Selenium’s Expected Conditions include checks for element existence, staleness, visibility, visible text, and title content. Pick the condition that represents what the next test action actually requires: finding an element is not the same as confirming it is visible.

How FluentWait and polling work
Java FluentWait example
Wait<WebDriver> wait = new FluentWait<WebDriver>(driver)
.withTimeout(Duration.ofSeconds(2))
.pollingEvery(Duration.ofMillis(300))
.ignoring(ElementNotInteractableException.class);
WebElement element = wait.until(d -> d.findElement(By.id("target")));
This demonstrates the Java API’s configuration points: total timeout, polling interval, and exceptions to ignore while evaluating the condition. The two-second timeout and 300-millisecond interval are demonstration values, not universal settings. Ignore an exception only when retrying after that exception is appropriate for the condition; otherwise the wait can obscure the reason an operation failed.
Python WebDriverWait options
Python’s WebDriverWait constructor provides polling and ignored-exception options as well. Its documented defaults in Selenium 4.50.0 are a 0.5-second polling interval and NoSuchElementException ignored. These are Python binding defaults; do not assume another language binding has the same defaults or API.

Why you should not mix implicit and explicit waits
Selenium’s guidance is direct: “Do not mix implicit and explicit waits.” An explicit condition may perform element lookups, and those lookups can themselves inherit the implicit timeout. That interaction can make elapsed time unpredictable. Selenium illustrates the issue with a 10-second implicit wait combined with a 15-second explicit wait: the timeout can occur after 20 seconds. Treat that as Selenium’s example, not a precise wall-clock guarantee for every test.
For condition-driven tests, keep the implicit wait at its default of zero and use explicit waits where needed. If you use an implicit wait intentionally, avoid wrapping lookups in explicit waits.

Binding differences to check
Selenium APIs are not identical across languages. The Expected Conditions guide notes that .NET stopped supporting Expected Conditions in Selenium 4; Ruby commonly uses blocks or lambdas. Check the documentation for the language binding and version your test suite actually uses rather than copying a Python or Java example unchanged.
Common wait problems and fixes
- The wait times out although the page eventually looks ready: make the condition reflect the actual prerequisite for the next action, and confirm the locator identifies the intended element. A wait for presence alone does not establish visibility.
- The test takes longer than the explicit timeout suggests: check whether an implicit wait is also set. Nested element lookups can add their own waiting, so mixed waits do not provide a reliable combined elapsed-time limit.
- A custom Python condition never succeeds: ensure the callable returns a truthy result when the state is ready. A comparison that remains false causes
untilto keep waiting until it times out. - An exception keeps appearing during polling: inspect whether it is appropriate to ignore that exception. Python ignores
NoSuchElementExceptionby default; Java FluentWait can be configured with ignored exceptions. Ignoring unrelated failures can hide the real defect. - An example’s class or method is unavailable: verify the binding and version. In particular, Expected Conditions support differs by language, and .NET does not support those classes in Selenium 4 according to Selenium’s guide.
ScreenshotNeo alternative for screenshot capture
Selenium waits are for synchronizing browser tests with page states. If the task is to capture a website image or PDF rather than drive a test browser, ScreenshotNeo is a separate screenshot API and MCP server for developers; it is not a Selenium wait library.
Or skip the browser setup
One GET request can return a screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
