Selenium News and Updates: What Was in A Smattering of Selenium #88?

A Smattering of Selenium #88 was a link roundup published by Adam Goucher on June 15, 2012—not a Selenium version announcement. Its nine visible links ranged across browser testing, Python, Ruby, APIs and web development.

What does “Selenium #88” mean?

The “#88” is the roundup’s issue number, not a Selenium software version. Goucher introduced the post with “Five days and fifty links later…”; the accessible post itself presents nine selected links. The page carries a modification notice dated August 7, 2021, but the post is dated June 15, 2012. Read the original roundup.

What links were in the roundup?

The entries were a broad collection of resources, not a report about one Selenium feature or release:

  • Jasmine Headless WebKit and a forthcoming discussion of headless browsers.
  • Three approaches to generating test data for Ruby automated tests.
  • Waiting for Watir-WebDriver downloads and determining a downloaded filename.
  • An explanation of Python class definitions, followed by Online Python Tutor.
  • WatirSplash, which the post suggested as a framework to borrow ideas from.
  • Python deployment anti-patterns.
  • A short piece titled “Don’t Build APIs…”.
  • An ASP.NET MVC, Selenium and IIS Express resource.
  • A SeConf 2012 talk about waiting for Ajax-intensive pages.

Those are the post’s link labels and brief descriptions. They do not establish whether the linked pages or tools are maintained today, or whether their advice remains current.

How to read this roundup in context

The mix reflects a software-testing community sharing useful links across languages and adjacent development topics. It should not be read as a single tutorial, a curated list of current recommendations, or an official Selenium release note.

For current Selenium use, the project describes itself as an umbrella for tools and libraries that automate web browsers. WebDriver is its core interface for browser interaction and regression testing, while Selenium Grid distributes tests across machines and browser/operating-system environments. Selenium IDE serves a different use case: simple record-and-playback. These tools have distinct roles rather than being interchangeable alternatives. See the Selenium project homepage.

WebDriver is also a standards-based interface. The W3C page lists a Recommendation dated June 5, 2018, and a newer Working Draft dated July 2, 2026; those are different publication statuses, not contradictory release dates. W3C WebDriver specification page.

What changed after 2012?

Modern Selenium context should not be projected backward onto Goucher’s 2012 links. Selenium 4 uses the W3C WebDriver standard by default and no longer supports the legacy protocol. Selenium’s upgrade guide notes that the final Selenium 3 releases already included W3C-compliant code, and provides migration guidance for Ruby, JavaScript, C#, Python and Java. Selenium 4 upgrade guide.

A Selenium 4.27 release announcement dated November 27, 2024, covered JavaScript, Ruby, Python, .NET, Java and Grid. It reported more than 5.1 million active users in the preceding 30 days; that is a historical figure from that announcement, not a current usage count. Selenium 4.27 announcement.

Capture a web page without setting up a browser

For developers who need a page image rather than an interactive browser test, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It is not a replacement for Selenium when the task requires browser interaction or regression testing.

Or skip the browser setup

For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of Stripe:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts and failed loads are not billed, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server exposes screenshot and PDF tools to AI agents, including Claude and Cursor. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
