Selenium News and Updates: What the Current Release Means—and What “93” Leaves Unclear

Selenium is browser automation software, and its components solve different problems: WebDriver drives browsers from code, Selenium IDE records and replays interactions, and Selenium Grid distributes test runs across machines. As of October 3, 2026, Selenium’s downloads page listed version 4.49.0 as the stable release for its core language bindings and Server/Grid. The title’s “93” is not explained by the available official release information, so it should not be read as a confirmed version number.

What Selenium does

The Selenium project describes its purpose simply: “Selenium automates browsers. That’s it!” (Selenium homepage). Developers use it to automate browser interactions, especially regression tests that need to run against real browsers and environments.

Selenium is not one single tool with one workflow. Its main components address different stages or scales of browser testing.

Component Best fit How it works
WebDriver Coded browser automation and regression tests Language-specific bindings let local or remote scripts drive browsers.
Selenium IDE Quick interaction recording, playback, and exploratory testing A browser plugin records and replays browser interactions.
Selenium Grid Distributing tests across machines and browser environments It runs tests across combinations of browsers and operating systems and centralizes environment management.

These distinctions are described by the Selenium project and its downloads page.

What the latest listed Selenium version was

On October 3, 2026, the official downloads page listed Selenium 4.49.0 as stable for .NET/C#, Ruby, Java, Python, and JavaScript, with the bindings dated September 9, 2026. It also listed 4.49.0 as the latest stable Selenium Server/Grid version. These are a dated snapshot, not a promise that the same version remains current; check the official downloads page before installing or upgrading.

The downloads page also links language-specific changelogs and API documentation. Choose the binding for the language your test suite uses, and consult that binding’s changelog when assessing an upgrade; a project-wide version number does not replace language-specific migration notes.

Which Selenium component should you choose?

Choose WebDriver for maintained test suites

WebDriver is the natural starting point when tests need repeatable logic, assertions, and integration with a codebase. Its language bindings support local or remote browser scripts, making it appropriate for browser-based regression automation and tests across environments. You write and maintain the test code, which gives you control but also makes selector choices, waits, setup, and debugging your responsibility.

Choose Selenium IDE for quick recording and exploration

Selenium IDE is a plugin for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, according to the official downloads page. It records and plays back browser interactions and can help reproduce a bug or explore a workflow. Treat a recording as a starting point rather than assuming it is a durable substitute for a deliberately designed regression suite.

Choose Grid when execution must be distributed

Selenium Grid is designed to distribute test runs across several machines and manage browser and operating-system environments centrally. It becomes relevant when a local run is not enough to cover the environments or execution capacity your team needs. Grid is an execution infrastructure choice; it does not remove the work of writing and maintaining useful tests.

What the Selenium 4.0 Alpha 7 Python notes actually say

The Python changelog’s Selenium 4.0 Alpha 7 entry is historical prerelease information, not current upgrade advice. It records three notable API or compatibility changes:

  • Support for Python versions earlier than 3.7 was dropped.
  • desired_capabilities was deprecated in favor of capabilities.
  • DevTools API support was added.

The same entry also notes work involving file uploads on remote drivers, local proxy handling, script pinning, WebKitGTK/WPEWebKit, and Edge WebView2 naming. See the Python changelog for the entry in context. Because Alpha 7 predates the currently listed stable 4.49.0 release, do not apply its notes as though they were a current migration checklist.

What “Selenium 93” means—and what cannot be confirmed

The available official release information does not explain the “93” in the title or establish that it names a Selenium release. The downloads page’s dated stable listing is 4.49.0, while the surfaced Alpha 7 changelog is explicitly historical. Without a source identifying “93,” treating it as a version, browser version, or release number would be speculation. For confirmed release announcements, consult Selenium’s release archive.

If your immediate job is capturing a webpage rather than building browser automation, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF; for example, this cURL call captures a page as WebP:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, inspect page information, and capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
