Selenium Manager is bundled with Selenium 4.6 and later and runs automatically as a fallback when you have not explicitly supplied a driver. It finds a compatible driver, downloads it if needed, and caches it locally—so you usually do not need to download ChromeDriver or add it to PATH yourself. Selenium Manager documentation
Set up a browser session without a manual driver download
Use the normal WebDriver constructor or factory for your language. The examples below assume the relevant Selenium binding is installed and the browser is installed locally.

Exact package-install commands vary by language and project; install the official Selenium binding for your language and keep it current enough to include Selenium Manager.
What Selenium Manager does—and does not do
The Selenium Project describes Selenium Manager as its official driver manager, shipped with Selenium releases. A language binding invokes it when no driver has already been provided. It detects the installed browser version, resolves a compatible driver using vendor metadata, downloads the driver when necessary, and stores assets in the cache. Driver management is not the same as installing a browser. Selenium Manager’s browser-download capability arrived separately: Chrome from 4.11.0, Firefox from 4.12.0, and Edge from 4.14.0. These are feature milestones, not a promise that every browser can be installed automatically in every environment. Installing Edge on Windows can require administrator permissions. If a browser is already installed, the basic WebDriver examples above use it.
Selenium Manager is a fallback, not an override. If your code or environment already provides a driver through a supported path or another manager, Selenium uses that setup rather than replacing it automatically.
Configure Selenium Manager when the default is not enough
Most developers can leave the defaults alone. For controlled environments, settings can be passed as command-line options, placed in se-config.toml, or set with SE_-prefixed environment variables. Linux package-managed browsers are a notable case: their versioning or locations can require a specific driver and explicit browser or driver paths. Follow the distribution and browser packaging constraints rather than assuming the local browser behaves like a standard vendor installation.
Inspect automatic driver resolution
When a session fails during setup, run Selenium Manager directly with debugging enabled to see browser detection, version resolution, downloads, and resolved paths:
selenium-manager --browser chrome --debugThis is a diagnostic command; application code should normally create sessions through its language binding. If the command is unavailable, use the binding’s setup error and Manager logs to identify the executable or environment involved.

Cache behavior, reproducibility, and network trade-offs
The default metadata time-to-live is 3600 seconds (one hour) and can be configured; setting it to zero disables the TTL behavior. Selenium Manager also removes browser or driver version directories that have not been used for more than 30 days. As a result, metadata may refresh and an old cached version may no longer be present when a long-idle environment runs again. Selenium Manager cache settings
- For local development: automatic resolution avoids routine manual driver downloads and lets the Manager cache reused assets.
- For reproducible CI: decide whether to pin browser and driver versions, provision them in the build image, or allow resolution at run time. A pin improves control but requires deliberate updates.
- For restricted networks: configure an approved proxy or pre-provision the needed assets and use offline mode. Offline mode cannot fetch anything missing.
- For managed shared machines: use an intentional cache location and account for permissions, cleanup, and whether concurrent jobs can safely access it.
Troubleshoot failures by separating driver setup from browser behavior
“Unable to locate driver” or session creation fails
- Confirm the Selenium binding version includes Selenium Manager; the bundled manager has been available since Selenium 4.6.
- Check that the browser is installed and that the account running the test can access it.
- Check network or proxy access to browser-vendor metadata and driver downloads, unless the required assets are already cached.
- Inspect whether a manually configured driver path or third-party manager is taking precedence over Selenium Manager.
- Run
selenium-manager --browser chrome --debugto inspect resolution details.
First run fails on an air-gapped machine
SE_OFFLINE=true blocks network requests and downloads. It is only suitable when the matching browser and driver assets are already available locally; pre-provision them or run once in an environment with approved network access.
Linux browser and driver versions do not match
Package-managed browser builds may need a distribution-specific driver or explicit browser and driver paths. Check the installed browser version and package guidance, then pin or point to the compatible assets as an intentional environment configuration.

Manager binary is incompatible with the machine
For supported configurations, Selenium 4.13.0 and later documents SE_MANAGER_PATH for selecting a compatible custom Selenium Manager binary.
The browser starts, but tests fail or hang
Not every Selenium error is a driver-resolution failure. The Selenium troubleshooting guide identifies poor synchronization as the most common Selenium-related error. Do I need to install Selenium Manager separately?
No. It is bundled with Selenium releases from 4.6 onward and is invoked by the bindings as needed.
Can Selenium Manager install the browser as well as the driver?
It has browser-management support, but that capability was added by browser at different release milestones; driver management alone does not mean the browser is installed.
Should I remove an existing ChromeDriver setup?
Not necessarily. Selenium Manager only acts as a fallback when no driver is otherwise provided. Remove or change an existing setup only if you intend to rely on automatic resolution instead.
