In Selenium’s Java API, findElement(By) returns the first matching element and throws NoSuchElementException if there is no match. findElements(By) returns a list of all matches, or an empty list when none are found. Use the singular method when one element is required; use the plural method when zero or more results are valid or you need to inspect a group.
How the two methods differ
| Question | findElement(By) |
findElements(By) |
|---|---|---|
| What does it return? | The first matching WebElement. |
A List<WebElement> containing all matches. |
| What if there is no match? | Throws NoSuchElementException. |
Returns an empty list; it does not return null. |
| When is it useful? | When the test requires one element and should fail if it is absent. | When zero, one, or many matches are valid, or when you need to inspect every match. |
Both methods accept the same By locator strategies and are available through Selenium’s SearchContext interface. A WebDriver searches the current page; a WebElement can be used as a narrower search context.
Use findElement for one required element
When the test cannot proceed without an element, use findElement. If the locator matches multiple elements, Selenium returns the first match, not a list. If it matches none, the lookup fails with NoSuchElementException.
WebElement submit = driver.findElement(By.id("submit"));
submit.click();
This is appropriate for a required control such as a submit button. If absence is an expected state—for example, an optional banner—use findElements instead of catching an exception merely to check whether the element exists.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse findElements for optional or repeated elements
A plural lookup makes the no-match case an ordinary empty-list result. Check isEmpty() or size() before using the matches.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
List<WebElement> alerts = driver.findElements(By.cssSelector(".alert"));
if (alerts.isEmpty()) {
System.out.println("No alerts are present");
} else {
for (WebElement alert : alerts) {
System.out.println(alert.getText());
}
}
This pattern also suits tables, menus, and other repeated elements when the test needs to inspect every match. The Selenium Java API advises using findElements(By) and asserting a zero-length result when looking for elements that may not be present.
Search within a located element
You can call either method on a WebElement to search in that element’s context. For example, locate a form and then gather its inputs:

WebElement form = driver.findElement(By.tagName("form"));
List<WebElement> inputs = form.findElements(By.tagName("input"));
Take care with XPath when the search context is a WebElement. Under WebDriver conventions, an XPath beginning with // searches the full document. Use .// when you want descendants of the current element only:
List<WebElement> inputs = form.findElements(By.xpath(".//input"));
How implicit waits affect lookups
Both methods are affected by the driver’s implicit-wait setting. With an implicit wait configured, findElement retries until it finds a match or the timeout is reached. findElements may return as soon as it finds one or more elements; if none appears, it returns an empty list after the implicit-wait timeout.

Consequently, an empty list does not necessarily mean Selenium checked only once. If lookup timing seems unexpected, inspect the implicit-wait configuration and the page state at the time of the search.
Common errors and fixes
- Expecting
findElementto returnnull: it throwsNoSuchElementExceptionwhen no match exists. UsefindElementswhen absence is an acceptable outcome. - Expecting
findElementsto returnnull: it returns an empty list. CheckisEmpty()orsize()before accessing an item. - Expecting
findElementto return all matches: it returns only the first match. UsefindElementsto process a collection. - An element lookup from a parent finds items elsewhere: for a
WebElementXPath search, replace a leading//with.//to limit the search to descendants. - A lookup takes longer than expected: check the implicit wait. Singular and plural lookups can wait for a match or for the configured timeout when no match appears.
