Selenium 4 uses a client–server architecture: your language binding sends WebDriver commands to a browser-specific driver, which controls the browser. For remote execution, Selenium Grid routes a new session to a matching machine and then directs that session’s commands to the node running it. Ordinary WebDriver traffic is not simply the legacy JSON Wire Protocol; Selenium’s WebDriver implementation is based on the W3C WebDriver protocol.

What Selenium 4 WebDriver architecture means

Selenium is an umbrella project for tools and libraries that automate web browsers. In practical terms, a test uses a language binding such as Python or Java, issues WebDriver commands through that binding, and receives results from a remote end that interacts with a browser. The W3C describes WebDriver as a platform- and language-neutral interface for inspecting and controlling browsers; the W3C WebDriver Recommendation dates to June 5, 2018, and work continues in a separate Working Draft dated July 2, 2026. The draft is not itself a Recommendation.

The key distinction is between the client-facing API and the protocol used to communicate with the browser-control endpoint. Selenium’s binding gives the test a convenient programming interface; WebDriver defines how commands and responses cross the client/remote-end boundary. Selenium describes WebDriver as driving browsers natively through browser-vendor automation APIs.

The local WebDriver command path

  1. Your test calls the binding. For example, it asks to open a page, locate an element, or click a button.
  2. The binding sends a WebDriver command. The client communicates with the local browser-specific driver endpoint using the WebDriver protocol.
  3. The driver controls the browser. The remote end implements the command and interacts with the browser or its vendor automation endpoint.
  4. The result returns to the test. The binding exposes the response as an API result or an error.

A local session can control a browser installed on the same machine. The Selenium Java server is not required just to run a local Python script; a server/Grid endpoint is relevant when the browser session is remote.

Run a local Python session

This example uses the Python binding and Chrome. It assumes Python and Selenium are installed and that a compatible Chrome browser is available. Selenium’s current Python API page showed version 4.50.0 when consulted and lists Python 3.10 or newer; check that page for the version and requirements applicable when you install.

from selenium import webdriver

# Selenium Manager can resolve the browser driver in ordinary setups.
driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
    driver.get("https://example.com")
    print(driver.title)
finally:
    driver.quit()

The call to webdriver.Chrome() starts a local session. get() sends a navigation command, and quit() ends the session and releases its resources.

What changes when you use Selenium Grid?

With RemoteWebDriver, the test connects to a Selenium server URL and supplies browser options or capabilities. Grid handles session allocation and execution on a remote node. It is useful when tests need different machines, platforms, browser/OS combinations, or parallel capacity. The trade-off is more infrastructure to configure, secure, observe, and keep reproducible.

How Grid routes a new session

  1. Router: the front door for client requests. It sends a new-session request to the queue and routes later commands to the node responsible for an established session.
  2. New Session Queue: holds requests that have not yet been assigned to a node.
  3. Distributor: looks for an available slot whose stereotype—the slot’s minimum capability set—matches the request, then assigns the session to a node.
  4. Node: runs the browser session. A node can advertise multiple browser slot types; its maximum-session setting separately limits concurrency.
  5. Session Map: records which node owns each active session so Grid can route its commands.
  6. Event Bus: carries asynchronous events among Grid components.

These are six cooperating component roles, not six sequential HTTP hops. Grid uses synchronous REST-like JSON over HTTP for calls that need a response, including most WebDriver commands, and asynchronous Event Bus messages for broadcasts where a response is not necessary. The Distributor works from a scheduling model; during startup or state changes, that model may temporarily differ from actual node availability.

Remote Python example

Start or obtain a Grid endpoint first, then use its URL in the client. The example shows the client side; the endpoint and node configuration depend on your deployment.

from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options

options = Options()
driver = webdriver.Remote(
    command_executor="http://grid-host:4444",
    options=options,
)
try:
    driver.get("https://example.com")
    print(driver.title)
finally:
    driver.quit()

For a local learning setup, Selenium documents a standalone quick start as well as distributed component setup. Verify current commands, ports, and topology in the Grid getting-started guide rather than assuming a development-machine configuration is appropriate for production.

Choose local execution or Grid

Question Local WebDriver Selenium Grid
Where does the browser run? On the machine running the test. On a selected Grid node, potentially another machine.
When it fits Simple development, debugging, or execution on one machine. Browser/OS coverage across machines or distributed parallel execution.
Operational overhead Lower; manage the local environment. Higher; configure nodes, routing, capacity, and network access.
Session placement Implicit: the local browser. Grid schedules a matching slot; inspect Grid’s session and node information to diagnose placement.

Do you still need to download ChromeDriver?

Usually not for an ordinary local Selenium binding setup. Selenium Manager is implemented in Rust and is used by Selenium bindings by default to automate much of browser and driver management. You can generally instantiate a WebDriver without separately downloading a driver.

Manual installation and configuration remain useful when your environment is offline, locked down, customized, or otherwise unsupported by automatic resolution. Pinning browser and driver versions can also make a controlled test environment more reproducible, at the cost of maintaining those versions yourself. The documentation establishes both approaches; there is no universal choice for every environment.

WebDriver BiDi: commands plus browser events

Classic WebDriver is primarily a request/response command interface: the client asks the browser to do something and waits for the result. WebDriver BiDi adds a WebSocket-based bidirectional channel through which automation can receive and react to browser events, including network requests, console messages, and JavaScript errors.

Selenium’s documentation characterizes BiDi as the cross-browser replacement for Chrome DevTools Protocol. That description does not guarantee identical feature coverage across browsers or language bindings. Check current support for the exact browser, binding, and event you need before designing a test around it.

Protect WebDriver and Grid endpoints

A WebDriver endpoint can create and control browser sessions, so an exposed endpoint is not a harmless status page. The W3C WebDriver Working Draft dated May 28, 2026 suggests allowing only loopback connections by default to reduce the risk that arbitrary machines on a network can create sessions; it also discusses limiting accepted IP ranges. This is draft guidance, not a finalized normative requirement.

  • Keep local driver endpoints on loopback unless remote access is deliberately required.
  • For Grid, expose only the necessary entry point and restrict access with network controls appropriate to your deployment.
  • Do not treat a development standalone setup as production-ready without reviewing current Selenium deployment guidance, capacity, and network boundaries.

Common setup and architecture problems

Driver or browser cannot be resolved

Automatic management depends on the environment being able to find or obtain compatible browser and driver components. In restricted or offline environments, configure the browser and driver manually using the relevant binding documentation, then confirm their versions and paths.

A remote session request waits or cannot be allocated

Grid may have no available slot matching the requested capabilities, or nodes may not be registered or ready. Check the requested browser options against node slot stereotypes and available concurrency; remember that the Distributor’s scheduling model can temporarily lag actual state.

A session starts but later commands fail

Confirm that the session remains active and that the Grid Session Map can associate it with its owning node. Also check node health and network reachability between the Router and node. Grid uses both synchronous HTTP and asynchronous events, so not every internal activity appears as one simple client-to-node request chain.

Remote access creates a security concern

Bind local endpoints narrowly, restrict Grid ingress to trusted clients, and follow the current deployment documentation. Do not expose a browser-control endpoint to arbitrary network users.

Does Selenium Grid run the test code?

The test client sends commands; Grid allocates a browser session to a node, and that node runs the browser session.
