Selenium 4 modernized WebDriver around the W3C standard, added optional relative locators, rebuilt Grid, and introduced a path toward event-driven browser automation with WebDriver BiDi. You usually do not need to rewrite a Selenium 3 suite wholesale: the original 4.0 upgrade was intended to be largely a dependency change, but code that uses deprecated APIs or Selenium internals may need edits. Driver management and BiDi have continued to evolve since the 2021 launch, so check your binding, browser, and Selenium version rather than treating the launch feature list as the current limit.
What changed in Selenium 4?
Selenium 4.0 was released on October 13, 2021. Its central change for WebDriver users was alignment with the W3C WebDriver standard. In practical terms, that is about standardizing how WebDriver clients and browsers communicate and improving interoperability across the ecosystem—not a requirement to rewrite every test or change every locator.
Selenium 4 is an ongoing release line, not just the original 4.0 feature set. The latest official release identified here is 4.49, announced September 9, 2026. Later releases have continued work on BiDi and individual language bindings, so a feature’s availability can depend on the Selenium version, binding, and browser.
At a glance
| Area | What changed | What it means for a test team |
|---|---|---|
| WebDriver protocol | Selenium 4 aligned with the W3C WebDriver standard. | Existing test intent and locator strategies can remain; check compatibility where code depends on deprecated or internal APIs. |
| Locators | Relative locators can express spatial relationships between elements. | Use them selectively when a relationship on the page is meaningful; they are optional alongside CSS, XPath, and other familiar strategies. |
| Browser capabilities | The 4.0 announcement highlighted capabilities for Firefox and Chromium-derived browsers, including authentication, network interception, DOM-change waiting, and JavaScript error inspection. | Verify support for the specific browser and binding before building a test around one of these capabilities. |
| Grid | Grid was rebuilt for standalone, hub-and-node, and distributed operation. | Relevant when tests need remote sessions or distributed execution; not required for an ordinary local run. |
| Driver setup | Selenium Manager was introduced in Selenium 4.6 to reduce manual driver setup. | Inspect its behavior in your actual environment; the original 2022 description is not a complete statement of current scope. |
| Browser events | WebDriver BiDi adds a WebSocket-based bidirectional channel. | It enables event-driven automation, but command coverage varies by version, browser, and binding. |
Do Selenium 3 tests need to be rewritten?
Usually, begin by upgrading the Selenium dependency and running the existing suite—not by rewriting tests preemptively. In the October 13, 2021 launch announcement, Selenium committer Simon Stewart described the move as intended to be as easy as changing the dependency from 3.x to 4.0.0. The same announcement cautioned that users relying on internal or deprecated APIs might encounter problems. That launch-era intent is not a guarantee that every project will upgrade without changes.

Upgrade in a controlled order
- Upgrade the language binding. Read the Selenium 4 migration guidance for the binding your project uses, and identify deprecated APIs or dependencies on Selenium internals before changing test logic.
- Run the current suite with existing locators. Keep established CSS, XPath, and other locators initially. A major-version upgrade is a poor time to combine unrelated locator rewrites with compatibility debugging.
- Check browser and driver setup. Reproduce the CI environment, including installed browsers and any driver configuration, rather than assuming a local machine behaves the same way.
- Validate browser-specific features individually. If tests use authentication, interception, DOM-change events, or JavaScript error inspection, confirm support in the exact browser and binding combination.
- Decide whether execution topology should change. Keep local execution if it meets the need; adopt Grid for remote sessions, parallel capacity, or distributed infrastructure only when those requirements justify it.
- Adopt BiDi incrementally. Verify each command against current Selenium release notes and browser/binding support before making it a dependency for critical tests.
What are Selenium 4 relative locators?
Relative locators find an element based on its spatial relationship to a known element—for example, an input to the right of a label or a control above another element. They can make a locator clearer when the page relationship is stable and meaningful. They do not replace traditional selectors, and they are not automatically more resilient: changes to layout can break a position-based relationship just as DOM changes can affect other locators.
Java example: locate an input to the right of a known label
import static org.openqa.selenium.support.locators.RelativeLocator.with;
import org.openqa.selenium.By;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebElement;
WebElement emailInput = driver.findElement(
with(By.tagName("input")).toRightOf(By.id("email-label"))
);
Use a stable anchor and confirm the relationship against the rendered page. If the label and input are not reliably side by side at the viewport sizes used in your tests, a direct CSS or other semantic locator may be more dependable.
Does Selenium 4 still need a separate ChromeDriver?
Selenium Manager was introduced to reduce the manual work of finding and configuring browser drivers. The Selenium Project’s November 4, 2022 description of Selenium 4.6 said it could configure Chrome, Firefox, and Edge drivers when a driver was not found on PATH; if a driver was already installed, that behavior was ignored. That is a historical description of the initial release, not a full account of current Selenium Manager behavior.

For a current project, do not infer that a separate driver must always be installed—or that no driver setup is ever needed—from the 2022 announcement alone. Test the exact Selenium version, browser installation, permissions, network conditions, and CI image you use. If your organization pins drivers or restricts downloads, document and validate that setup explicitly.
What changed in Selenium Grid 4?
Grid 4 was rebuilt to support several execution topologies: standalone on one process or machine, traditional hub-and-node operation, and distributed deployments intended for modern infrastructure such as Kubernetes. It is the part of Selenium 4 most relevant to teams operating remote browser sessions, parallel test execution, and shared infrastructure. A local WebDriver test does not need Grid just because it uses Selenium 4.
Choose a topology based on the execution need
| Topology | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Local WebDriver | Individual development and suites that run against a browser on the same machine. | Does not provide Grid’s remote or distributed session management. |
| Grid standalone | A simple Grid deployment on one process or machine. | Less distributed than a multi-node deployment; capacity remains tied to the deployment you operate. |
| Hub-and-node | Teams coordinating remote browser sessions across nodes. | Requires operating and configuring the Grid components and nodes. |
| Distributed Grid | Infrastructure spread across modern environments, including Kubernetes deployments. | Offers a broader deployment model, with corresponding infrastructure and operational complexity. |
The 4.0 launch also described Docker container management, a refreshed UI with a GraphQL model, live VNC session previews, and OpenTelemetry support. These are operational and observability capabilities, not changes that every test author needs to use.

A Selenium Project article from October 13, 2021 documented server JAR CLI help for Grid topics, shell completion, and --dump-config for printing active Grid configuration as JSON. Because that documentation is historical, verify the command syntax against the server version you run before relying on it in scripts or runbooks.
What is WebDriver BiDi, and how is it different from CDP?
Traditional WebDriver commands primarily send an action and receive a response. WebDriver BiDi adds a WebSocket-based, bidirectional channel so automation can subscribe to browser events and react to them, including network requests, console messages, and JavaScript errors. Selenium’s current WebDriver overview describes BiDi as a W3C-standard direction for cross-browser browser communication.
Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) is a Chromium-specific development protocol. It is not the same as BiDi and should not be described as the standard cross-browser answer. BiDi is intended to provide a cross-browser protocol; whether a particular BiDi command works still depends on its implementation in the Selenium binding and target browser.

BiDi support is still evolving
The Selenium 4.47 announcement of August 10, 2026 reported work toward a shared, binding-neutral BiDi schema. It also noted that Firefox blocks CDP access in .NET, Python, and Ruby. Selenium 4.49, announced September 9, 2026, reported additional binding work, including .NET browsing-context screencast support and Python typed BiDi errors and Grid test execution. These release notes show ongoing implementation work, not universal availability of every command.

| Decision | Prefer the established approach when… | Consider the newer option when… |
|---|---|---|
| CSS/XPath versus relative locators | A direct selector is readable, stable, and tied to a useful page attribute. | A spatial relationship is clearer and remains stable across supported layouts. |
| Local versus Grid execution | A browser on the test machine meets your execution needs. | You need remote sessions, parallel capacity, or distributed execution infrastructure. |
| WebDriver versus CDP or BiDi | Ordinary browser actions cover the test, or a required capability is explicitly browser-specific. | You need event-driven browser communication and have verified the BiDi command in your browser and binding. |
| Pinned drivers versus Selenium Manager | Your environment requires explicit, controlled driver versions or has restricted setup conditions. | Its behavior is suitable for your environment and reduces the manual setup you currently maintain. |
Common Selenium 4 upgrade and setup problems
- Compilation or import errors after the dependency change: look for use of deprecated APIs, internal classes, or binding-specific changes. Consult the migration guidance for that language binding and update only affected code.
- A browser session fails to start in CI but works locally: compare the browser installation, driver availability, PATH, permissions, and network restrictions in the two environments. Verify the driver setup behavior with the Selenium version actually running in CI.
- An authentication, interception, DOM-event, or JavaScript-error test works in one browser only: these capabilities were announced with browser-family qualifications. Confirm support for the exact browser and binding; do not assume identical coverage across browsers.
- A relative locator selects the wrong element or stops working after a redesign: inspect the rendered layout and anchor element. If the spatial relationship is not stable, use a direct locator based on a stable page attribute instead.
- A Grid session cannot be created: check that the chosen topology is running and that the requested browser can be served by its configured nodes. For configuration debugging, consult the CLI options for the specific Grid version rather than copying historical command syntax blindly.
- A BiDi command is unavailable: check the Selenium release, binding, and browser implementation separately. BiDi is actively evolving, so support for one command does not establish support for another.
Performance, reliability, and operating cost
Selenium 4 features do not by themselves guarantee faster or more reliable tests. Relative locators can improve readability but remain sensitive to layout; Grid can provide remote and distributed execution but adds infrastructure to operate; and BiDi can enable event-driven workflows only where the required command is implemented. Measure those trade-offs in the suite and environment you actually run rather than assuming a release upgrade changes pass rates or execution speed.
No standard Selenium 4 price or measured performance gain is established here. For budgeting, distinguish the Selenium and browser automation code from the infrastructure your team chooses to run for browsers, Grid nodes, and CI. The appropriate operating cost depends on that deployment, and no universal dollar figure is supported here.

If the job is to capture a website screenshot rather than interact with the page as a WebDriver test, ScreenshotNeo is a separate screenshot API and MCP server—not a replacement for Selenium’s browser-test framework. One GET request returns an image or PDF, with the API options documented at ScreenshotNeo documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers say which page verdict and billing result applied. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
