Selenium 4 uses the W3C WebDriver protocol and no longer supports the legacy JSON Wire Protocol. If your Selenium 3 tests already use W3C-compliant commands and capabilities, they should generally continue to work; the main migration checks are capability formatting and any Actions interactions that behave differently. WebDriver BiDi is a separate, bidirectional protocol for browser events—not a replacement name for classic WebDriver.
What changed in Selenium 4?
Selenium 3 supported both the W3C WebDriver protocol and Selenium’s older JSON Wire Protocol while the standard was being developed. Selenium 4 made W3C WebDriver the supported protocol and removed legacy JSON Wire Protocol support. Selenium’s 2020 overview described the change as dropping support for its original home-grown wire protocol: Selenium: What’s Coming in Selenium 4.
The change matters most at the boundary between a local Selenium client and a browser driver or remote Grid. The W3C WebDriver Working Draft dated 2 July 2026 defines a platform- and language-neutral remote-control interface. It specifies an HTTP-compliant wire protocol for remote ends, with endpoints corresponding to commands; it does not require every language binding to implement its local API in the same way.
| Area | JSON Wire Protocol | W3C WebDriver in Selenium 4 |
|---|---|---|
| Status in Selenium | Legacy protocol supported alongside W3C during Selenium 3’s transition. | Standard protocol; Selenium 4 removed legacy JSON Wire Protocol support. |
| Interoperability | Older Selenium-specific wire format that required compatibility and translation behavior during transition. | Standardized remote HTTP protocol and command endpoints defined by W3C. |
| Capabilities | Older projects may contain legacy names or formats. | Use W3C capability names and valid browser/vendor-specific capability namespaces. |
| Transition behavior | Some Selenium clients and Grid versions translated or handled both dialects; exact behavior depended on version. | Do not assume Selenium 4 or Grid 4 will translate a legacy client’s JSON Wire requests. |
Selenium contributor Titus Fortner explained that maintaining conversion logic added complexity and edge cases. The transition was not identical across all bindings: Ruby, JavaScript, and .NET removed handshake code for Selenium 4.0, while Python and Java/Grid had later transition details; remaining legacy support was removed in Java Selenium 4.9 and Grid 4.9. See Selenium’s account of removing legacy protocol support for the chronology. If a project depends on translation, check the exact client and Grid versions rather than assuming all Selenium 4 releases behaved alike.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Will Selenium 3 code work after upgrading?
Often, yes. Selenium’s Selenium 4 upgrade guide says W3C-compliant code from the latest Selenium 3 should work as expected in Selenium 4, and that the protocol implementation generally should not affect end users. That is not a guarantee that every Selenium 3 project upgrades without edits: old capability patterns, invalid vendor options, or changed Actions behavior can expose problems.
What to check during a Selenium 4 migration
- Upgrade the binding and related dependencies. Follow the official upgrade instructions for your language binding and check compatibility with the browser driver and any Selenium Grid or cloud service in use.
- Use the binding’s browser Options class. Replace deprecated Desired Capabilities patterns where applicable. Keep standard capabilities in their standard form and configure browser-specific options through the relevant Options class.
- Correct capability names. Use
browserVersionrather thanversion, andplatformNamerather thanplatform. An incorrectly named or malformed capability can cause session creation to fail. - Namespace non-standard capabilities. Browser or cloud-vendor-specific options should use the vendor’s documented prefix or options namespace. Do not send arbitrary unprefixed names as though they were standard W3C capabilities.
- Recheck Actions interactions. If clicks, key presses, pointer movement, or other action sequences change after the upgrade, isolate and review the Actions calls against the binding’s Selenium 4 behavior.
- Verify legacy client and Grid combinations. If an older Selenium 2 or 3 client relied on Grid protocol conversion, identify the exact client and Grid versions and upgrade the client rather than assuming Selenium 4.9-era Grid still translates JSON Wire Protocol.
Why can session creation fail?
A session-start error after upgrading is often a capabilities problem rather than evidence that the browser itself cannot be automated. Selenium’s upgrade guide warns that malformed or non-W3C capabilities can prevent a session from being created. Inspect the capabilities actually sent to the driver or Grid and check:

- Whether standard fields use the W3C names, especially
browserVersionandplatformName. - Whether vendor-specific fields are nested or prefixed exactly as the browser, cloud provider, or Grid expects.
- Whether code still builds capabilities with deprecated patterns that conflict with the binding’s Options class.
- Whether an older client is attempting JSON Wire Protocol communication with a Selenium 4 server or Grid that no longer supports that path.
Make one capability correction at a time and retry session creation. If the failure persists, compare the client, driver, browser, and Grid versions and consult the service provider’s documented capability format.
How is WebDriver BiDi different?
WebDriver BiDi is related to Selenium’s browser-automation work but is distinct from classic W3C WebDriver. Selenium describes BiDi as a bidirectional protocol using WebSocket communication for browser events. Classic WebDriver remains the command-oriented remote-control protocol discussed above; BiDi adds a way to receive browser events through a bidirectional connection. See Selenium’s WebDriver documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the W3C WebDriver specification require every Selenium language binding to use the same local API implementation?
No. It standardizes the remote end’s wire protocol; local-end implementations can differ as long as they communicate with the remote end.
